Leon McCarthy, 12, was born without fingers on his left hand. That didn’t stop him from being able to do many tasks. But Leon could not grasp more than one object at a time. So Leon’s father, Paul, created a prosthesis(假肢), using a 3D printer. Now Leon has fingers that open and close. “It was a doityourself, fatherandson adventure,” says Paul.

When Leon was a baby, his doctor advised his parents not to give him a prosthetic hand until he was in his early teens. “The doctor said Leon should first learn to get full use out of the hand he was born with,” says Paul. As Leon got older, his father looked into buying a prosthetic hand, which can cost as much as $30,000. Paul found a more affordable solution.

One day, Paul discovered a video on the Internet about Robohand, a prosthesis created with a 3D printer. He downloaded the free instructions and called Robohand’s creators for advice. They told him all he needed was a 3D printer—which costs around $2,000—and some materials.

Luckily, Leon’s school had recently purchased a 3D printer and it offered to help Paul build the hand for Leon. “We used a soccer shin guard(护胫), cardboard, and tape. They cost about $10.”says Paul.

With his new hand, Leon can do things better. “I can help my mom more, because now I can carry two grocery bags,” he says.

Leon’s father has already built several hands for Leon. Leon helps design each one. He says there’s one thing in particular that he wants to do with a future prosthesis. “The goal,” he says, “is to be able to tie my shoelaces(鞋带)

When milk arrived on the doorstep

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note-“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”-and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practiced to have a delivery service.

Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊). Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

28. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer ________.

A. to show his magical power                                   B. to pay for the delivery

C. to satisfy his curiosity                                          D. to please his mother

29. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house?

A. He wanted to have tea there.         B. He won the respect of the family.

C. He was treated as a family member.   D. He was a respectable person.

30. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?

A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now.        B. It has been driven out of the market.

C. Its service is getting poor.                 D. It is forbidden by law.

31. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?

A. He missed the good old days.      B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.

C. He needed it for his milk bottles.   D. He planted flowers in it.

I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval, he learns to love himself and will be successful in his own way.    Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate when he stood up.Could he be more intent while standing up?

This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the will power to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.

Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality qualities, and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.

I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being personal and unique. It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.

32. Time and again the author got his son seated in order to make him_____.

   A. work fast    B. go polite   C. stay relaxed    D. keep attentive

33. The underlined “it” (in the first paragraph) probably refers to______.

   A. his son’s doing better while standing up

   B. his failure in keeping his son under control

   C. his own experience as a school boy

   D. his disappointment with his active child

34. By this passage, the author attempts to tell other parents to_____.

   A. correct their kid’s manners from the early ages

   B. respect and trust their kids’ ways of behaviors

   C. develop a good relationship with their children

   D. guarantee their children’s freedom at home

35. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

   A. Parental help with teen’s study

   B. Adult influence on teen growth

   C. Kids’ success in their own styles

   D. Friendship between generations

Practical ways to get motivated

Be mindful of your “why”

If I need to clean the floor, but I really don’t like cleaning, then I won’t feel very motivated to do it. However, if I have a big enough reason to do it — because I’m having some guests to come over, or I love the feeling of having a clean floor, then that “bigger purpose” can be strong enough to get me to act, even though I don’t enjoy cleaning. If I stay mindful of why I’m doing it, I can get motivated to do it.   36

    Celebrate your successes.

It’s easy to get down on yourself because you haven’t reached your goal yet. You may overlook all of the hard work and small goals that you’ve accomplished. Remember to reward yourself and to celebrate your successes.   37  In the same way, how can you motivate yourself if you’re not going to reward yourself and celebrate your successes?

      38

Imagine how good you’ll feel when you’ve reached your goal. Take a moment and think about how you’ll feel and what you’ll think after you’ve achieved it. What does it feel like?   39  Focus on that feeling, and use it to drive you right now to move towards your goal. Just think of how good it will be.

    Get inspired.

Read stories, watch movies, listen to other people who have achieved what you want to achieve. Imagine what they had to go through to get to where they are. Imagine how big the heart is of some of your biggest heroes and how badly they wanted what they achieved.   40

  A. Imagine having already achieved it.

  B. Get help and support when you’re not feeling motivated.

  C. So remind yourself of why you’re doing what you’re doing.

  D. What kind of self-talk would you use to motivate yourself?

  E. Let them inspire you to access your own great desire within.

  F. You might feel proud, happy, satisfied, or any other emotion.

  G. Would you be able to properly train a dog without rewarding him?
