When I was at school, I had a classmate whose name was Ted. Ted and I were in the same class. He sat next to me. He had serious problems in communicating with others. We always had to guess what he was saying. Besides, most of my classmates did not like to play with him because his hands and shirts were always dirty. I told him several times a day to wash his hands. I tried to let him know the importance of being clean. But he just could not do it well and I didn't know how to change him. One day, our teacher Miss Hsieh walked to Ted. She said nothing. She took Ted to the washroom. Miss Hsieh washed his hands slowly and told Ted that he should keep himself clean. She did that every day for one week. Finally, Ted understood what Miss Hsieh wanted him to do. Miss Hsieh's love gave me a good example. When I am doing my job, I always teach my students by showing them the right ways to do things. I always remember to give them more time to learn and to grow up. I'd like to say thanks to Miss Hsieh because I learn a lot from her.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they don't act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, "I love you" is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers on Valentine's Day is even more out of the question. One day, my mother was sewing a quilt(被子)."Mom, I have a question to ask you." "What?" she replied, still doing her work. "Is there love between you and Dad?" My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. Then she said, "Susan, look at this thread. Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. Love is inside." I listened carefully but I couldn't understand until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. After they were back from the hospital, my mother helped him walk slowly on the beautiful country road every morning. My father had never been so gentle. But after two months he still couldn't walk by himself. All of us were worried about him." Dad, how are you feeling now?" I asked him one day. "Susan, don't worry about me," he said gently. "To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mom. "Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply. Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

In Germany, there is a special museum. It is the only one of this kind in the world and only very y few people know it. Every year, the number of people who come to visit the museum is only about one thousand. What kind of museum is it? It is a museum about taxes (税收). In this museum, you can see the history of taxes and all kinds of taxes in different countries in the world. After visiting the museum, people can draw a conclusion (得出结论). That is from 3000 B. C. (公元前), the kings, dictators (独裁者) and finance ministers (财政部长) could tax people freely. They taxed people heavily because of such things as wars, weddings (婚礼) or road building. They needed money and they got money by taxing their citizens (公民). In the early times of Egypt, farmers had to pay heavy taxes if the water level (水面) of the Nile River rose. The kings said that if the water level rose, there would be much more earth in farmers' fields. So the farmers could get a good harvest and they should pay more taxes. A strange kind of tax 一 Window Tax appeared (出现) in England. It lasted more than one hundred years. How? If there were more windows in the wall, the people must pay more taxes. So in those years, people built windows in the wall as few as possible. Russian people once paid a tax for their beards (胡子). The people who had paid this tax would get a special piece of paper. But what about the people who didn't pay for their beards? Of course, their beards would be cut. But without a beard for a man is a way to scorn (蔑视) God. He would also be punished.

Emergencies (紧急情况) don't happen very often. But when they do, you want to get help first. No one wants to spend time looking up the phone numbers. In 1968, the United States government wanted one number that people could call tor emergencies. They decided that 911 was easy to remember and people could dial it quickly, The very first 911 call was made on February 16, 1968, in Alabama. Today, 911 is used for emergencies in most parts of the United States and many parts of Canada. Other countries may use other numbers. In Great Britain, it's 999. If you're not sure which emergency number is used in your area, check your phone book. When to call Never call 911 as a joke or just to see what might happen. The only time you should call 911 is when a person is badly hurt or in danger right now! So call when there is a fire, a car accident, or sudden sickness, etc. When in an emergency call When you speak to the 911 operator (接线员) on the phone, it's always OK to give your information. Speak slowly and clearly when you explain what's happening. What happened? Where are you? Who needs help? Don't hang up (挂断)! If you have to dial 911, do not hang up until the operator tells you it's OK to do so. That way, you can be sure that the operator has all the information to offer help fast. A dog named Faith dialed 911 when her owner who was in a wheelchair fell and needed help. She had been taught to use a speed 一 dial (快速拨号) function.
