A company called Compass Pools has some good news for height and swimming enthusiasts. Recently, the company announced their novel design—a first of its kind 360degree pool which is set to be placed on a skyscraper in London. The Infinity London will be the first and only building in the world to include this cuttingedge pool design. The pool will be laid on top of a 55story skyscraper and will allow people to float over 200 meters above the London skyline with unobstructed(没有障碍的) views of the city.

The entrance to the pool is hidden. People began to raise questions about how anyone would get inside the pool. Compass Pools explains:" Swimmers will access the pool through a rotating spiral(螺旋形的) staircase based on the door of a submarine, rising from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out. "

But that is not the only unique technology of the pool. The designers found a way to make sure the wind doesn't blow the water down to the streets. They included a builtin anemometer(风力计) to monitor the wind speed. It is linked to a computercontrolled building management system which will also take care of the temperature of the water.

Alex Kemsley promises that this unique pool will surpass everyone's expectations. "It's quite a strange feeling to swim in the SkyPool at The Shard and have helicopters flying past at your level but this pool takes it a step further, "he says. "Putting your goggles(游泳镜) on and with a 360degree view of London from 220m up, it really will be something else—but it's definitely not one for the acrophobic(恐高的)!"

While the exact date of the construction is not clear yet, if things go well, it may begin in 2022. The location has yet to be confirmed too.

It was New Year's night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his sad eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies (百合花) on the surface of a clear calm lake. Then he cast them on the earth, where few more hopeless people than himself moved towards their certain goal—the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets.

The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he remembered the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads—one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and resounding with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poisonous snakes hissed and crawled.

He saw a star fall from the sky and disappear, and this was the symbol of himself. His regret, which was like a sharp arrow, struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered on life together with him. But they had made their way to success and were honored and happy on this New Year's night. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards that heaven where his father lived. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he let out a cry, "Come back, my early days! Come back!"

And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year's night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.

As for those who still remain at the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years have passed and your feet fall on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain, "Oh youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!"

  1. (1) What does the underlined word "them" in the first paragraph refer to?
    A . The lilies. B . The stars. C . The people. D . The eyes.
  2. (2) What do we know about his friends from Paragraph 3?
A . They had also made many mistakes. B . They kept in close touch with him. C . They had made major achievements. D . They looked down on him.
  3. (3) What can we say for sure about the young man's father from the passage?
A . His father died. B . His father lived far away. C . His father returned home. D . His father gave him two choices.
  4. (4) What does the writer want to remind the readers in the last paragraph?
A . It's no use crying for help. B . It's vital to value your childhood. C . They should not wait to choose the right way. D . They should be careful at the entrance of life.

Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let's assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?

In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves attractiveness of the area.

It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like change.

Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, though that might be the more risky choice.

  1. (1) What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?
A . Some of them are not attractive. B . Most of them are too expensive to preserve. C . They are more pleasing than modern buildings. D . They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.
  2. (2) Which of the following is true according to the author?
A . We should reproduce the same old buildings. B . Buildings should no dominate their surroundings. C . Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in. D . No one understands why people speak against new buildings.
  3. (3) By "move things forward" in the last paragraph, the author probably means "       "
A . destroy old buildings B . put things in a difference place C . choose new architectural styles D . respect people's feeling for historical buildings
  4. (4) What is the main purpose of the passage?
A . To explain why people dislike change B . To warn that we could end up living in caves. C . To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings. D . To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.

It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn't going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us surprise.

Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lantems gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters (怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.

There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts,小妖精), or Jack-o-Lantems. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

"Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

"Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.

Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing." Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"
