The pupils of Grangetown High have been busy getting to know their newest and tallest classmate — a 7-meter-tall giraffe outside their school.

The giraffe is a huge sculpture (雕像). The school's headmaster noticed it in an artist's garden as he drove past one day, and thought it would be perfect for his school. “I knew everyone would love it," he said, "because our basketball team is known as the Grangetown Giraffes, and they wear giraffes on their shirts. So I asked them to write to the artist, asking how much it would cost to buy the giraffe. He was very kind and got it ready to deliver (递送) in six weeks — all for nothing! It was expected to arrive one Sunday morning, so that the pupils would see it when they got to school on Monday — at that time they had no idea that we were getting it."

The artist, Tom Bennett was a university professor of chemistry before he retired in 2012 and only took up metalwork a couple of years ago. "I've always drawn pictures," he said. I can even remember doing it on my first day at school — I drew a horse. I wanted it to be the best horse picture ever, but I don't think I succeeded."Tom's first metalwork was a bicycle on which he and his wife could go cycling together, “It was the most uncomfortable bike ever created," he said, "so I gave up making bicycles and went into sculpture instead."

Meanwhile the pupils at Grangetown High are very happy with their new classmate. "We're going to hold a competition to give it a proper name," said one girl. "Everyone likes the expression on its face, so perhaps that will give us some ideas."

  2. (2) How did the pupils probably feel when they got to school on Monday?

For art, the year 2115 will be one full of events. In May of that year in Berlin, the philosopher-artist Jonathon Keats' "century cameras" — cameras with a 100-year-long exposure (曝光)time — will be brought back from hiding places around the city to have their results developed and exhibited Six months after that, the Future Library in Oslo, Norway, will open its doors for the first time, presenting 100 books printed on the wood of trees planted in the distant past of 2015.

As Katie Paterson, the creator of the Future Library, puts it: "Future Library is an artwork for future generations". These projects, more than a century in the making, are part of a new wave of "slow art" intended to push viewers and participants to think beyond their own lifetimes. They aim to challenge today's short-term thinking and the brief attention spans of modem consumers, forcing people into considering works more deliberately. In their way, too, they are fighting against modem culture — not just regarding money, but also the way in which artistic worth is measured by attention.

In a similar fashion, every April on Slow Art Day, visitors are encouraged to stare at five works of art for 10 minutes at a time — a tough task for the average museum visitor, who typically spends less than 30 seconds on each piece of art.

Like the Future Library, the century cameras are very much a project for cities, since it's in cities that time runs fastest and the pace of life is fastest. "Since I started living in a city, I've somehow been quite disconnected/' Anne Beate Hovind, the Future Library project manager, who described how working on the library drew her back to the pace of life she knew when she was growing up on a farm in her youth, told the Atlantic magazine.

  1. (1) What will NOT happen in2115 according to the first paragraph?
A . A camera which was produced 100 years ago will be exhibited. B . The Future Library will be open to the public for the first time. C . Photos with a 100-year exposure time will be developed and exhibited. D . Books printed on the wood of trees planted in 2015 will be displayed.
  2. (2) What can we learn about people's attitude towards works of art nowadays?
A . They spend little time on works. B . They pay more attention to works. C . They spend much money on works. D . They stare at works for 10 minutes at a time.
  3. (3) What is the purpose of the wave of slow art?
A . To advocate creating works of art slowly. B . To protect works of art from being damaged. C . To promote works of art for modern culture. D . To encourage people to consider works more deliberately.
  4. (4) How does Anne Beate Hovind feel about the city life?
    A . It's discouraging. B . It's awful. C . It's busy. D . It's developed.

Do you know the proverb "no pains, no gains"? It gives the impression that we ought to be suffering while we study. It seems that the only way to know if we're putting in enough work is how much hardship we bear. We are totally taken up with study, shutting ourselves away for a big exam. Is that necessarily true?

When we haven't taken the time to come up with another idea, we just shut ourselves in a room with a book. It's no surprise that we find revision boring and difficult. Just as children learn from playing, we can learn from doing, or at least from study techniques that interest us, rather than make us switch off. Shutting ourselves away can make us learn to hate studying, leading to a situation where, instead of being able to concentrate on our work, we are troubled by how unfair it is that we must study. This can be part of a vicious(恶性的)cycle that traps us into ineffective revision, or poor progress fueling further annoyance.

Thankfully, working in the company of other people really helps fight against that. We just need to learn how to deal with distractions(分心). It's not necessary to avoid all company, just lazy company. They constantly try to keep others in conversation. While studying in the same room with someone who is ironing or working out is perfectly possible. Of course, it's also a good idea to avoid the company of people involved in activities where you would rather be playing than studying. Working while sitting next to someone playing video games is most likely to end with a new high score games rather than productive revision.

If being around others means working in a noisy environment, a pair of headphones and some background music can block out noises. They also act as a psychological barrier, so that people think twice before interrupting you. Besides, we should know friends and family can lessen feelings of isolation. And connecting with other people makes us happy, so it's important not to give that up and to make sure that we take the time to socialize.

  1. (1) What is the author's purpose writing the text?
A . To introduce an effective studying means. B . To encourage us to work as hard as possible. C . To remind us to balance activities and study. D . To discuss the importance of family company.
  2. (2) What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A . Good ideas are needed in terms of progress. B . Ways that interest us can lead to effective revision. C . Shutting ourselves away can help concentrate on work. D . Revision is interesting and easy with study techniques for certain.
  3. (3) What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 imply?
A . One should learn from certain activities that interest us. B . Playing video games is helpful for an effective study. C . One shouldn't study with the company of a video player. D . The more time one spends in playing games, the higher test scores one will get.
  4. (4) What had you better do if you are studying in a noisy environment?
A . Give up others company at once. B . Think twice before taking any action. C . Give indication of not wanting to be interrupted. D . Force yourself to be accustomed to the environment.
