Trees are an important part of the Earth. They provide wood for buildings and things for making paper. They provide homes for all kinds of insects, birds and other animals. For example, many birds live in trees. Many kinds of fruits come from trees, such as apples, oranges, pears and peaches. Trees also help keep our air clean and our ecosystems healthy. We breathe in oxygen and breathe out harmful gases. However, trees breathe in harmful gases and breathe out oxygen. And trees can help other plants grow because they can hold the soil. Trees keep the soil from being blown away, so plants can fight against strong winds. Trees do much for us, our environment, other plants and animals, but we don't just love trees for that. Trees can also be very beautiful—tall enough to touch the sky and so big around that we can't even hug them. So we should stop cutting down trees and enjoy the beauty of them.

Cars make our lives more convenient. But they can also be a problem. For example, fossil fuel (化石燃料) cars mainly cause air pollution. To improve the environment, many countries are developing electric vehicles (EVs,电动车). Among them, China is taking a leading role and has created the world's largest EV market. Last year, over 40 per cent of the 753,000 EVs sold in the world were sold in China, more than twice as many as the number sold in the United States. "Filling up a fossil fuel car with gas (汽油) is more expensive than charging (充电) an electric car," said Wu Hao, who bought an electric car this year. However, there are still some problems. It can be hard to find charging piles (充电桩) and the cars can't go far before being recharged. Some of these problems are being solved. In 2014, China had 31,000 charging piles. Now China has the world's largest EV charging network, with more than 450,000 charging piles in total. Developing EVs is one of many efforts that China has made to cut down pressure on its environment after the government promised to stop increases in carbon dioxide emissions (二氧化碳排放量) by 2030. "As China goes, so will the world's car industry," the Wall Street Journal said.

A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apples he grew. One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home, he did not know where to plant it. He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit. Finally he planted the tree in his woods (树林) where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died. Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place. "What's the difference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my fields, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit." "Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed (抢夺) everyone of the fruit, but also have destroyed (摧毁) a good apple tree!"
