When Millet was a boy he worked on his needy father's farm. At the rest hour in the fields the other workers would all take naps, but young Millet would spend time drawing. Finally the village where he lived gave him a little money to Paris to study art.

When Millet reached Paris, he had a tough time. Fortunately, when he was almost starving, someone bought one of his peasant paintings, which enabled his family to leave for Barbizon.

Millet's pictures of peasants at work were painted in a unique way. The painter would go out on the farms and watch them carefully--digging, spreading manure, sawing wood, or sowing grain. Then he would come home and paint what he had seen. So astonishingly accurate was his memory that he could paint at home without models and get all the movements of his figures right. When he did need a figure to go by he would ask his wife to pose for him.

One of his noted artworks is called "The Sower", which shows a man seeding. He reaches into his bag for seed and then swings backward to scatter the seed, and with each swing of his hand the sower moves forward. In Millet's picture the sower has been working hard, but his swinging step and arm still move smoothly, like a machine. Only the man's head reveals his great tiredness.

Another masterpiece is called "The Gleaners". A gleaner is someone picking up the leftover in the field after the wheat harvest. When farmers near Barbizon are extremely badly-off, even the little the gleaners can find is a help. You can see from Millet's picture what back-breaking work gleaning must be.

  1. (1) What do we know about Millet?
A . His wife supported him to be a painter. B . He was keen on painting as a kid. C . He spent his whole life in Barbizon. D . He was brought up in Paris.

  3. (3) What do Millet's works convey?
A . The farmers' hardships. B . The scene of farming. C . His love for the village. D . His anxiety about the farmers.
  4. (4) What painting style of Millet can be inferred from the text?
    A . Impressionistic (印象派的). B . Abstract. (抽象派的). C . Romantic. D . Realistic.

When Brian Hall first heard about an ambitious volunteer effort to create an Internet map of every street and path in every city and village on the planet, he was hooked. At that time, OpenstreetMap had only a few American members.

Just a few years later, the Berkeley software engineer is editing digital maps so precise that they include drinking fountains and benches in the Bay Area parks where he hikes, and the mapping community of OpenstreetMap has increased to more than 240, 000 global members.

OpenstreetMap, which is trying to create an Internet map of every street in every city and village on the planet with the help of volunteers, is transforming how map data are collected, shared and used.

In the hours after the destructive earthquake in Haiti, OpenstretMap produced detailed digital maps of a quake-altered city that were important to relief workers on the ground - a "crisis mapping" pattern for future disasters.

Increasingly, the nonprofit community collaboration model behind OpenSteeetMap, which shares all data in its maps free of charge, is also changing the business of mapping. More and more, the accuracy of researched on Google Maps or directions issued by your car's navigational (导航) device are based on data collected by Hall and other volunteer members of OpenStreetMap's do-it-yourself army.

Google plans to introduce a product in the U. S. called Map Maker, which gives users much more power to customize maps. And Television Atlas—a company that supplies digital map data used for such things as car navigation devices and 911—now allows individual users to suggest map changes directly from their navigation devices.

Citizens Mapping is "an evolution of the entire mapping process", said Richard Takata, chairman of the geography department at San Jose State. "It is going to be part of the mapping world as we move on to the future".

UK supermarkets are producing more plastic waste despite promises to cut down, new research suggests, as sales of bags for life increase to 1.5 billion.

Retailers (零售商) were responsible for more than 900, 000 tons of plastic waste in 2018, according to a report from the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) released Thursday. Seven of the 10 largest supermarket chains reported a higher plastic packaging tonnage (吨位) in 2019 compared to last year, although exact figures for this year have not been released.

Compared to 2018, this year the number of sold eco-friendly bags for life rose by about 25%, the report stated. Campaigners (运动领导者) said the rise showed that the bags are now being used by many as a replacement (替代品) for single-use carrier bags.

Campaigners recommend that supermarkets increase the price of bags for life to 70 pence ($ 0.9). They point to the 90% reduction in bags for life sales in Ireland, where prices are set at 70 cents ($ 0.77). However, in an ideal world bags for life would be removed completely, enforced (强制执行) by a government ban (禁令) , said campaigners.

"It's shocking to see that despite unprecedented (空前的) awareness of the pollution crisis, the amount of single-use plastic used by the UK's biggest supermarkets has actually increased in the past year," said Juliet Phillips, EIA ocean campaigner. He added, "Our survey shows that grocery retailers need to tighten up targets to drive real reductions in single-use packaging and items. We need to address our throwaway culture at its root through systems change, not materials change. Replacing one single use material for another is not the solution."

The report reveals that plastic use among suppliers is also to blame, and supermarkets have failed to make them reduce plastic packaging, Tesco has led the way in this area, threatening to delist (退市) products for suppliers who fail to cut excessive (过度的) plastic. Campaigners are urging other supermarkets to do the same.

Plastic waste is a global issue and various countries have taken action to reduce its impact.

  1. (1) What does the new research in the UK find?
A . What results in more plastic waste. B . Why customers use more bags for life. C . How many plastic bags have been used now. D . How UK supermarkets cut down plastic waste.
  2. (2) What do we know about the plastic waste in the UK in 2019?
A . It decreased slightly. B . It became more serious. C . It got controlled well. D . It was out of control.
  3. (3) What's Juliet Phillips's suggestion for the UK's supermarkets?
A . Banning the use of bags for life. B . Charging more for producing plastic bags. C . Taking practical steps to reduce plastic waste. D . Changing the material to make plastic bags.
  4. (4) What did Tesco do to cut down the use of plastic?
A . It required suppliers to cut down plastic packaging. B . It found out a replacement for single-use carrier bags. C . It called on consumers to use fewer plastic bags. D . It forced supermarkets to fight against plastic pollution.

Three Tips to Be a More Effective Learner

Keep Learning and Trying New Things.

A good way to become a more effective learner is to simply keep learning. According to an article in Nature, the amount of grey matter in certain areas of the brain increased for people who learned a new skill.

So if you are learning a new language, it is especially important to keep practicing what you have learned.  . This use-it-or-lose-it phenomenon involves a brain process known as pruning (修剪). Certain pathways in the brain are maintained while others are removed.

Another good way to learn is to focus on learning in more than one way. For example, instead of just listening to a podcast, which involves auditory learning, find a way to review the information by drawing or writing.  By learning in more than one way, you're further fixing the knowledge in your mind.

According to research, the more regions of the brain store data about a subject, the more interconnection there is. And more interconnection means more opportunities for a learner to pull up all of those related bits of data from the multiple storage areas.

Teach Someone Else What You Have Learned.

Educators have long noted that one of the best ways to learn something is to teach it to someone else. Do you still remember the science presentation you did your primary school? By teaching it to the rest of the class, you gained much more. You may start by translating the information into your own words. This process alone helps fix new knowledge in your brain. Next, find a way to share what you've learned.  .

A. Learn in Multiple Ways.

B. Focus on What You Learn

C. Otherwise, you will soon forget it.

D. This might involve taking notes, or drawing a mind map, etc.

E. But as soon as they stopped practicing the new skill, it disappeared.

F. You can apply the principle by sharing your newly learned skills with others.

G. Some ideas include writing a blog post or participating in a group discussion.

It was a Saturday in June, 1988. Out of a 16-year-old's early tiring summer, I had set up a tent(帐篷) in our rural yard and intended to sleep in it, but I stayed in the house to finish watching the Lakers' play-off game. It was almost midnight and Dad had been asleep upstairs for hours when someone knocked at the front door. It never happened to me not to answer it.

To my surprise, it was a girl about my age with a bloody cut on her head. "Hi. I'm Maria. What's wrong with you?" I asked her with concern. Awkward and embarrassed, she replied: "I'm Jane. I…" she hesitated and then asked me carefully, "May I stay here for the night? I'll be off tomorrow morning" Seeing her uneasiness, I comforted her, "Take it easy, Jane. Stay with me tonight." I invited her into the house. Looking around, Jane appeared to have calmed down. "Let me treat your injury first," I said and she agreed.

I cleaned and bandaged (包扎) her injured head and then gave her some bread and meat to eat. "Want to sleep in my tent?" I asked her and she nodded. Having left her in the bathroom, I went to look for another sleeping bag When I returned, Jane was seated on the sofa, her face clouded by sadness. Walking across the dark yard, I went into tent with Jane. We lay down side by side. Caught by curiosity and concern, I turned over again again, wondering what had happen to her and how she came here. Jane seemed to have sensed that and started to speak. Jane's father died of cancer years before. Her mother did some cleaning jobs to raise her. Money was tight but her mother tried to do what she could to satisfy Jane. Several weeks before, Jane accidentally saw a fine white dress in the store window, which she fell in love with at first sight. She excitedly told her mother about that, who promised to buy it as her birthday gift. From then on, Jane was looking forward to it.

注意:

1)续写词数应为 150 左右;

2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Jane's 16th birthday came but her mother didn't get home until the evening.
