On a dark winter day in Russia in 1896, Sergei Prokofiev sat by a piano next to his mother. She was helping him compose (作曲) his first piece of music. Sergei was only five years old.

He had overheard his parents discussing a terrible famine (饥荒) in India. The picture Sergei had of those hungry people in his mind caused him to write a story, in the form of musical notes. Sergei could not read music, so he picked out a tune on the piano keys, and his mother recorded the notes. Sergei titled it "Indian Gallop".

Sergei's mother began giving him piano lessons for 20 minutes a day, and his ability grew quickly. She had a great love for music, too, and Sergei often lay awake in bed at night and listened to her play the piano.

Sergei's parents found a famous music teacher for him. The teacher shouted at Sergei when he didn't practice reading and playing music. Sergei later wrote, "I wanted to compose great musical plays, and instead I was given all sorts of boring tasks." Yet he persisted with his studies and grew up to be a great composer.

In 1936 a children's theater asked Sergei to write music that would teach children about different instruments. He was happy and wrote the piece in a week, calling it Peter and the Wolf.

Sergei's Peter and the Wolf was enjoyed by children as well as adults. The first time Sergei played the piece on the piano, the children listening to it loved it so much that they made him play the ending three extra times. He was excited.

Today Sergei Prokofiev is remembered not only for his contributions (贡献) to classical music, but also for his sense of fun.

Iggy Azalea doesn't look like a rapper (说唱歌手). On May 17, she attended the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, US, with pink hair and a blue coat. She looked like a model, but won big as a rapper. The 26-year-old Australian beat big names like Nicki Minaj and Drake to win the award for Top Rap Artist.

It's a great achievement in many people's eyes, but Azalea knew what she wanted from the beginning. At 15 she dropped out of high school because she was only interested in art class. She worked as a house cleaner to save money for her dream the following year. Before her 16th birthday, Azalea left her home, a tiny town in Australia, for the US, making up her mind to become a rapper. Moving from Miami to Houston to Atlanta, she started rapping in the Southern-style accent of her surroundings and her single Ignorant Art came out in 2011. From then on, she has never looked back.

However, her style has caused lots of discussions. She might be one of the most polarizing (两极化的) artists. She raps with a southern American accent, even though she speaks with an Australian one. Many people comment that she overuses black culture in her music.

Her supporters are against it. American female rapper MC Lyte defended Azalea in an interview, saying she should not be judged because of where she's from. "Hip hop is universal, no color lines." MC Lyte said. Azalea herself is proud of her music. "I really want to be focused on what I'm doing," she said in an interview. "That's really dangerous when you're trying to figure out ways to entertain people and make them happy. I don't want to be a part of that."

  1. (1) After leaving for America, Azalea         .
A . went to an art school for her dream B . worked as a cleaner in the first year C . never returned to her hometown in Australia D . developed her Southern-style accent rapping
  2. (2) Azalea's music style is questioned because         .
A . she sings with Australian accent B . she looks like a model herself C . people think her music is of too much black style D . people don't accept singers from southern America
  3. (3) By saying "I don't want to be a part of that." Azalea means that         .
A . She's unwilling to become popular B . her music is not for entertainment C . she refuses to learn from other Rappers D . her music is not affected by others' taste
  4. (4) Which of the following can best describe Iggy Azalea?
    A . Kind and easy-going. B . Determined and confident. C . Honest and serious. D . Talented and friendly.

If you're planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.

First of all, always check and double-check departure (启程) time. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50. When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.

The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have at least a little of the local currency (货币) with you when you arrive in a country. This can be necessary if you are flying to a place few tourists normally visit. A few years ago, I was sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma. I flew there from London via (经由) Dallas, with very little time to change planes in between. I arrived there at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. "Listen! I only take real money!" the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was embarrassing (令人难堪的) .

The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.

  1. (1) According to the passage, it's obvious that         .
A . the author learns some rules of travelling from his own experiences B . the author doesn't plan his trips or journeys carefully C . Englishmen like to wear heavy suits wherever they travel D . the American taxi driver never travels to England
  2. (2) According to the passage, the driver was angry because         .
A . the author gave him false money B . the author did not give him the local currency C . the author did not give him money D . the author had no enough change
  3. (3) Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A . The author tells people to choose warm places as their travel destinations. B . You don't have to take credit cards when travelling. C . You should know more about the weather of the place you'll visit. D . You should take enough change when you travel to other countries.
  4. (4) What is the main idea of the passage?
A . A few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey. B . Always check and double-check departure time. C . It is important to have the local currency with you when you arrive in a country. D . To find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave.

9. 书面表达
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a.m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked. "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.

I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her.

"I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated."

"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.

"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice (临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long."

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器) . For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence to the address she had given me.

"How much do I owe you?" she asked.

    "Nothing." I said.

"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.
