1. 阅读理解
阅读短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the school seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, "You're nervous and that's okay. Everyone is afraid of high school." I denied it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my closest friends.

On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that I couldn't figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be? I didn't think I could rise to this challenge, especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock someone out with it!

Despite my fears, after the first week I finally had my schedule figured out. With the exception of falling up and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging.

Since then, I've been elected (选举) the vice monitor of my class, which wasn't much of a victory since only three people ran for the four positions.

It is normal to be scared of a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is not so frightening. Make sure you participate in some out- of- class activities because you'll find it easier to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn't straight A's.

Most important of all, be who you are, whether you're a "fool", an athlete, or a lower grader. Don't try to pretend to be someone you're not. Now you know the secret of my success.

  1. (1) The main reason for the author's fear on his first day in high school is that       .
A . he was not familiar with the new surroundings B . his schoolmates were unfriendly to him C . he was unable to work out the puzzle D . his schoolbag was too heavy for him to carry
  2. (2) From the author's first day's experience we can infer that           .
A . he didn't know the right way to class B . he got to school before classes began C . he was fond of the school immediately D . his home was far from the school
  3. (3) After his first week at school, the author        .
A . was still not accustomed to the schedule B . was gradually used to the new school C . found high school not so challenging as he had imagined D . ran for monitor of his class against three other students
  4. (4) According to the passage, the secret of the author's success lies mainly in        .
A . making more friends B . getting straight A's at school C . being who he really is D . joining in out-of-class activities

If you are like most students, you probably sit still while learning a new language. However, sitting still may not always be the best way to learn. English learners can improve their language skills through movement, says Tamara Jones. She works at the English Language Center at Howard Community College in Maryland.

So, what is the relationship between physical movement and the brain? The idea is that the brain and the body are joined together. This means that one affects the other.

Many people are familiar with the idea that the brain tells the body to move. And many people are familiar with the idea that repeating an action over and over again helps your brain to remember. However, some research, such as a study by Morsella and Krauss, suggests that your body might help your brain to find memories. Specifically, movements we make with our body, such as hand gestures, may help us to remember and use the correct words.

This idea is part of the reason why experts on learning strategies, which are ways to improve the learning process, suggest using movements. One learning approach, the Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach, or CALLA, calls the use of movements "Using Your Kinesthetic (动觉的) Sense".

Beyond helping the brain to find memories, movements also aid in learning, says Tamara Jones. There's a lot of research that suggests what you do with your body, you remember with your brain. And also, a lot of these physical movements will encourage us in class or in life, when we are practicing on our own, to repeat and repeat and repeat the word as we are doing the physical movement, and this also helps us remember the word."

  1. (1) Why does the author refer to Morsella and Krauss?
A . To measure their achievement. B . To prove Jones' opinion right. C . To introduce the theme of the passage. D . To present a commonly- held idea.
  2. (2) How can physical movements affect one's learning?
A . By shortening the repeating process. B . By motivating the brain to remember things. C . By helping one to study in a relaxed state. D . By enabling one to use advanced words.
  3. (3) Which statement may Tamara Jones agree with?
A . Knowledge starts with practice. B . The body can control the brain deeply. C . Movements help the brain work better. D . Language learners must be more active.

Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you have ever made. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 2lst century. With the world's largest population and a rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world's economy in the coming years. This will make learning Chinese very important for people in many industries, or for those of us who wish to visit China or learn from its culture and history.

There is an ongoing effort to modernize the writing system and standardize the language. An increasing number of people learning Chinese are learning Mandarin, so unless you absolutely need to learn a dialect (such as Cantonese), be sure you are studying Mandarin.

For native speakers of English, Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn. The vocabulary is wholly unfamiliar and unlike anything we know. In addition, in the Chinese tone system, words are spoken in rising or falling tones, which help to distinguish between them. Furthermore, there is the Chinese writing system- a collection of thousands of individual ideograms (表意文字或符号), which represent a word or an idea. These ideograms have no phonetic value—that is to say, we can't tell how the word is pronounced by how it is written. There is a method to present written Chinese in a phonetic script called Pinyin. If you are learning Chinese, you'll be working with this Pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing system shouldn't be passed up. All these factors make learning Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there's always a way to overcome it.

  1. (1) Learning Chinese is becoming more and more important, because       .
A . Chinese engines are very welcome B . China has the world's largest population C . there are more and more rich people in China D . China has become important to the world's economy
  2. (2) The last paragraph mainly tells us about        .
A . the difficulties of learning Chinese B . the advantages of learning Chinese C . the Chinese tone system D . the Chinese writing system
  3. (3) What would be probably written following this text?
A . The sources of Chinese characters. B . The importance of learning Chinese. C . The advice on how to learn Chinese. D . The difficulties of learning other languages.

How to Make Friends

Friendship is a very important human relationship and everyone needs good friends. Good friendship has many benefits. It offers companionship, improves self- worth and promotes good health. There are times in our lives such as when we have recently moved into a new town, or changed our jobs or schools. Such changes often leave us without a friend.  But for many of us the process is difficult and requires courage. Below are some helpful suggestions on how to make and keep friends.

    1 Associate with others.

    3

Choosing friends with common interests is important in building friendship as these interests will always bring you and your friends together. Hanging out will always be a pleasant experience.

    4 Let it grow naturally.

It is a good thing to stay in touch. However, try not to press your new friends with calls, messages or visits as this will likely wear them out and finally you may lose your friends.  The best friendships are the ones that grow naturally.

    5 Enjoy your friendship.

The best way to enjoy your friendship is to allow your friends to be themselves.  Try not to change them from who they are to what you want them to be. Become the kind of friend you want your friend to be to you.

It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn't going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick- or- treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson's was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self- made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us surprise.

Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, and my sister's hand, a bag for candy. Jack- o'- lanterns gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters (怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.

There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts, goblins (小妖精), or Jack- o'- lanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

"Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

"Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.
