1. 语法填空
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a  (total) different country? If so, then you are a third-culture kid.

The term "third-culture kid" (use) in the 1960s for the first time by Dr. Ruth. She first came across this phenomenon while  (research) North American children living in India. In general, third-culture kids benefit  their intercultural experience and they often reach excellent academic results.

Yet many  (difficulty) may arise from this phenomenon. Third-culture kids may not be able to adapt  (they) completely to their new surroundings. Also, they often find it hard  (develop) new friendship. Additionally, for a third-culture kid, it is often  (easy) to move to a new country than to return to his homeland. For example, after living in Australia for many years, Louis finally returned to the country  she was born. She didn't know anything about current TV shows  fashion trends. And she didn't share the same values as other teens of her age.

Hello and welcome to English with Lucy. Today we have another topic:" Four common British expressions." Now, before we get started, make sure you connect with me on all my social media which is right here. You can subscribe to my YouTube. You can also like me on Facebook. And for my Chinese followers, I have my Weibo account as well.

Four Common British Expressions:

"A piece of cake."

And this is very similar to "Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy, " which we've discussed in a former video. And basically, it means very easy. So I might come out of an easy exam saving, "That exam was a piece of cake."

"Break a leg!"

It actually looks really rather cruel, but I promise you it's positive.  And "Break a leg!" means "Good luck!" So before a race, before a job interview, before a test, instead of saying "Good luck!" I might say "Break a leg!"

"It cost an arm and a leg."

And this basically means something was really expensive. If I say, "My bag cost an arm and a leg, " I mean it cost a lot of money.

"To call it a day."

And this means "to end a task". So, for example, "I'm feeling a bit tired. I think I'll call it a day. "That means "I think I'll stop here. Let's finish."

Thank you so much for watching this program of "Four Common British Expressions." I hope you like it, and I hope you've learned something.

Do you like running enough to make it a habit? Tierney Wolfgram does; she has made running a lifelong career and isn't stopping.

In February, the 16-year-old from a high school, US, competed at the 2020 US Olympic Trials. She finished the marathon (42.195 km) with a time of 2:42:47 as the youngest competitor in the race and ranked 76th out of 390 runners. However, the cross-country(越野的)season was postponed to winter because of the COVID-19. So she jumped at the opportunity to train for another race-the Parkway Marathon in California. In November, Wolfgram broke the Women's American Junior marathon record with her time of 2:31:49. The old record was 2:34:32, which had stood since 1984.

"I'm completely stunned, "said Wolfgram's coach. "I knew she was going to break it, but she really showed out!"

During the run, Wolfgram once hit a wall pretty hard, but she overcame it to finish. "I guess I can say I gave it my all, "she told Runner's World. "When I finished, all I was thinking was I felt super happy, " Wolfgram said This was only her third marathon. In 2018, when Wolfgram was 15 years old, she ran her first marathon just because she wanted to see if she had the ability to do it. "I believed that I would get faster as the distances got longer… I'm still glad that I did it. "

When preparing for that first marathon, she ran up to 120 miles per week. Although her parents didn't have any background in running, they helped Wolfgram train. At first, her dad would take her out in the morning and run about 13 miles. The distance would gradually increase each day. On top of her runs in the morning, she would do cross-country practice after school.

Now Wolfgram will consider attending the Olympics Games in 2024 after it's scheduled.

Food safety is a problem in all places around the world and people in different areas of the world prepare foods in different ways. The WHO released five simple rules for preparing food in a safe way.

Key 1: Keep clean

The first key tells about the importance of washing. People should wash their hands often—before touching food, while they are preparing food, and any time after they go to the toilet People should wash all surfaces and equipment used for preparing food.

Key 2: Separate raw and cooked

People should separate raw, or uncooked food from foods that are already cooked and foods that will not be cooked. People should store raw meat, chicken, and fish in containers, or in separate areas Raw foods should not touch prepared foods.

Key 3: Cook completely.

People should cook eggs and meat, like birds, seafood, and animals, especially carefully. These foods may carry more micro-organisms than other foods.  It is also important that people re-heat cooked food completely.

Key 4:

When people are finished with eating, they should keep the leftover(吃剩的食物)in a refrigerator below 5℃ and shouldn't store it for too long. At room temperature, about 20℃, the amount of micro-organisms can increase very quickly. But temperatures above 60℃ or below 5℃ control the growth of micro-organisms.

Key 5: Use safe water and raw materials.

People should use safe water and choose fresh foods. Damaged or old food may develop harmful chemicals as it gets older.

A. Keep food at safe temperatures.

B. Eat cooked food immediately, while it is still hot.

C. They call these rules the "Five Keys to Safer Food."

D. Keeping everything clean helps people to avoid micro-organisms.

To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades, and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, school is very different.

Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want.

There are no teachers-only "staff members". The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. "You do not need to say to a three-year-old child 'Go explore your environment. "You can't stop them!" says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. "But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning."

At Sudbury Valley School, you will allow children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!

The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules.

Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each —even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more.

When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.

  1. (1) What does the school believe according to this passage?
A . Teachers cannot teach children Well. B . Children learn best when they do what they want C . Learning is for adults -children should only play. D . Children should only learn about one thing at a time.
  2. (2) What does Daniel Greenberg say about three-year-olds?
A . They love learning. B . They are very patient. C . They want to be outside all the time. D . They are too young to learn anything
  3. (3) What happens to the children after they leave this school?
A . Some of them are unique. B . They have unexpected problems. C . They usually do very good job. D . All of them are not successful.
  4. (4) What's this passage mainly about?
    A . Children's hobbies. B . An unusual school C . A school without rules. D . Education in the US.

Looking back, I find that I have been able to 13  the responsibility of owning a cat. Some tasks may be 14 , but that doesn't mean they can't be accomplished. You 15  need to do your best in order to push past them.

One morning in December, Tom Carr was playing with his friend Dot as usual in the yard. Tom was nine years old, and Dot was seven. Tom took very great care of his friend.

Then a man who Tom knew rode into the yard in panic. It was Mr. May, who lived at the next station, where there is a big farm. "Fire!"he cried to Tom's father, Mr. Carr. "Fire!One of the worst fire I've ever seen in my life. Come along, Carr. "

Mr. Carr called his men out. In an hour or so Mrs. May and her baby drove up. Tom and Dot ran to meet them. "Thank you, dear, "she said." The smoke is so bad at home that I was afraid it would choke (呛) the baby. "

She went to the house, and Tom and Dot were following her, when Tom stopped. "Look there, Dot." he said. "The brown calf(小牛)has gotten out of the yard!"The men were in such a hurry to fight the fire that they forgot to close the gate, and the brown calf was running away. Tom ran at once to bring the calf back, and Dot ran after him.

About half a mile from the farm yard the open land came to an end, and the bush began. The calf ran into the trees, and the children followed. The trees were not thick at first, and it was very easy to follow the brown calf through the bushes. But the calf ran into a deep valley, where Tom could not follow it. "Oh, what a pity, Dot, "he said." The calf is lost now. It will disappear into the bush. But give me your hand. We must go home!"

Tom now tried to find his way home. He felt sure he could easily get home, for they had only gone a little way into the bush. They walked on and on, and Dot got very tired. Tom took his friend or his back, and carried him for a long way. "Oh, how thick the smoke is!" said Dot, There had been smoke in the air all day, but now it was very thick. The fire had to be getting closer.

Paragraph 1:

Tom began to feel very scared

Paragraph 2:

When Mr. Carr came back to the yard, he was told that the two kids got lost.
