I realized I would not see a real person named Sophie at Sophie's Eatery because, like most new restaurants these days, Sophie's is a robo-restaurant.

When I walked in, a cute little manager robot appeared, looking rather like a toaster with blinking(眨) blue eyes. It escorted me to a nice table in the back. The menu monitor popped out of my table and showed me pictures of my dining choices. I tapped my choices and clicked OK, and the screen slid back down.

I watched as full plates rode the conveyer belts that moved along each aisle(过道) of tables. In just a few minutes, my dish stopped at my table, and I took it from the belt. Later, I placed my empty plate back on the conveyer belt, and it was taken away into kitchen to be cleaned.

I watched the little toaster showing customers to tables while I ate my main dish. The food was delicious, but I was starting to feel extremely angry because dealing with robots always makes me feel inhuman. Pretty soon, I wanted to talk to someone real, even if it was just a few sentences.

So when my dessert arrived, I took action. I dropped my plate on the floor with a satisfying crash. I was so happy when I saw the manager toaster's blinking red eyes—at last, a real live person would arrive!

But instead, a crew of two robots quickly appeared. A robot broom rushed over and started to sweep the piece of the broken plate into a robot garbage can. They finished and moved back into the kitchen.

My plan to get a little reality into Sophie's Eatery failed. I hope the robo-restaurant trend ends soon. I want to deal with people again!

"Beauty isn't about having a pretty face," begins a motivational quote. "It's about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a pretty soul. Oh, and pretty nails!"

That may be Angela Peters' motto. Last July, Peters, rolled her wheelchair into a nail salon (沙龙) at the Walmart shopping center in Burton to have her nails done. But Peters, who has cerebral palsy (脑瘫), was turned away. The salon told her that they were afraid it would be too difficult to properly paint her nails given that her hands kept shaking. What was meant to be a day of beauty for Peters was now a disappointment.

A Walmart cashier about to go on her break happened to see this. Ebony Harris recognized Peters as a Walmart regular. "She's just like everyone else. She wants to look pretty. So why can't she?" Harris said.

Harris approached Peters. "Do you want me to do your nails?" she asked. A smile spread across Peters' face. "Yeah!" Harris led Peters into the supermarket, where they shopped for nail polish. They settled on a color that would catch every eye. They then made their way into a neighboring Subway, found a table for two, and started. Harris gently took Peters' hand into hers and carefully began painting her nails. "She moved her hands a little bit, and she kept saying she was sorry," Harris said. "I told her, ‘Don't say that. You're fine. ' She makes me look at life and appreciate it much more than I have. "

Watching it all with surprise and admiration was Subway employee Tasia Smith. Smith was so taken by the scene that she wrote about it on Facebook. "She was so patient with her," she wrote. "Thanks to the Walmart worker for making this beautiful girl's day!"

A . To compare different views. B . To introduce the topic of the passage. C . To show the importance of beauty. D . To share his opinion about beauty.
  2. (2) The nail salon refused Peters' request because ______.
A . she had to use a wheelchair B . they were too busy to serve her C . she couldn't keep her hands still D . they hadn't the color she wanted
  3. (3) Which of the following words can best describe Harris?
    A . Brave and generous. B . Careful and fair-minded. C . Honest and considerate. D . Patient and warm-hearted.
  4. (4) What can be inferred about Tasia Smith from the last paragraph?
A . She thought highly of Harris' behavior. B . She wrote a thank-you letter to Walmart. C . She regretted not lending Peters a helping hand. D . She misunderstood Harris' relationship with Peters.

Cengiz Ozek sits at his desk in the poorly lit back office of his shadow theater near Taksim Square in central Istanbul. The theater is one of the last in operation in the city. He holds a piece of camel leather, a sheet of paper with some drawings on it, and a small cutter. In front of him are a few bottles of paints that he will use to create jointed puppets(皮影人偶). Ozek, one of the most influential contemporary Turkish puppeteers, hopes to appeal to a younger audience and boost the culture of Turkish shadow theater.

"There might be around 50 people, more or less, who do shadow theater in Turkey today, but only five or six of them are real professionals who are completely devoted to it," says Ozek while he works on a figure of Karagoz, the most famous figure in Turkish shadow theater—so famous is the character that the art itself is often called Karagoz.

To date, scholars have not been able to determine where this type of theater began to exist. Suggestions range from China to Central Asia, and from India to Byzantine Greece. Somescholars have focused on Bursa, the first capital city of the Ottoman Empire(奥斯曼帝国), and believe that the two main characters, Hacivat and Karagoz, were real people who lived in that city at the time. The two men were construction workers who often told jokes to amuse their co-workers, resulting in delays in the completion of their work. In the end, they were sentenced to death. However, the people of Bursa missed them so much that they began to tell their stories in the form of puppetry.

Ozek wants to open a Karagoz museum in his city in order to keep this art alive. He's also developing new characters to catch the attention of children. "We first try to attract them with modern characters that they know, and while they're watching, suddenly we bring out Karagoz," Ozek says. "We introduce him to them once again. When they watch it, they are satisfied, and we are happy as well. And like that, Karagoz survives in a way. "

  1. (1) What is Ozek doing according to paragraph 1?
A . He is making some puppets. B . He is watching a puppet show. C . He is taking a rest in his office. D . He is performing for his audience.
  2. (2) What can be learned about Turkish shadow theater?
A . It came to Turkey from India directly. B . It first appeared at a construction site. C . It is now on the path to decline. D . It is usually known as Hacivat.
  3. (3) What is stressed in the third paragraph?
A . The influence of shadow theater. B . The origin of puppetry in Turkey. C . The history of Bursa as a capital city. D . The punishment in the Ottoman Empire.
  4. (4) Why does Ozek want to open a Karagoz museum?
A . To breathe some life into his city. B . To achieve his childhood dream. C . To display puppeteers' works. D . To carry shadow theater on.
