Bamboo is the tallest member in the grass family. It is one of the fastest growing plants on earth, growing reportedly up to 98 inches in just 24 hours. Bamboo is mainly found in Asia, some parts of Africa and parts of the America in many different varieties. Over centuries bamboo has had a variety of uses like medicine, paper, construction, furniture, home decoration and musical instruments.

The use of bamboo as a construction material is not new and many countries have been using it to build homes for centuries. Bamboo's unique and efficient natural design makes it a good building material.

Bamboo is very flexible and hence when it grows it can be defined to grow into specific shapes. Its shock absorption capacity (减震功能) makes it a great building material for earthquake- resistant houses. Bamboo houses can also stand a hurricane with wind speeds of up to 170 mph.

Bamboo is cheap and readily available in areas where it is cultivated. Transportation of bamboo is also cheaper than other materials.

The most important quality of bamboo is its environmentally friendly quality. It is renewable and bamboo forests can be grown in a few years. Its naturally smooth surface does not require painting, making it safe from health dangers caused by paint. Bamboo can be grown in a variety of climates and houses made of bamboo do not require use of other materials like concrete (混凝土), steel, etc. Pesticides (杀虫剂) and other chemicals need not be used while cultivating bamboo, making it more eco-friendly.

Bamboo also has certain drawbacks. For example, not all types of bamboo can be used for construction. Bamboo cannot be used to build the skyscrapers that we all love. Wet bamboo deteriorates (变坏) faster.

Despite all the drawbacks, the environmentally friendly features of bamboo make it a great building material. The few drawbacks that bamboo has can be mitigated with research and the use of bamboo as an alternative building material should be encouraged to make our earth greener.

During his youth, Albrecht Durer apprenticed with his father, who was a goldsmith, and also with a local painter. But he showed a remarkable talent for printmaking, which at the same time was the main method of illustrating books. This art form involved carving an image into a block of wood, inking the wood and then pressing it against paper or cloth. Durer's skillful carving and printing resulted in beautiful prints. His decision to become a print-maker rather than a goldsmith disappointed his father but benefited Durer throughout his adult life.

From time to time, deadly diseases broke out in Durer's hometown of Nuremburg, Germany. This danger was one reason why Durer decided to leave Nuremberg twice to visit Italy. He was also fascinated by Italy's Renaissance culture. While there, he absorbed Italian philosophy, science and artistic techniques. He also served as official court artist to two Holy Roman Emperors.

Durer was extremely diligent regarding the details of his artwork as evidenced in his nature pieces. These include Young Hare, which correctly captures the energy of a hare even while it is sitting still, and Rhinoceros which was so correct that it was included in scientific documents for years.

The same attention to details can be seen in Durer's early self-portrait. The first one that he made at age 13 shows a young boy with childish features. A second self-portrait that he made at age 22 displays a more mature individual who has a greater sense of himself. In a self-portrait done at age 26, he is a finely dressed gentleman, reflecting his rise in status within the printmaking community.

Maybe you often have arguments with your parents about clothes, homework, friends and many other personal things.  Most teenagers must be sorry or even frightened when their parents fight. They might think their parents don't love each other any more and that it would result in divorce.

They might disagree about important things like jobs or major family decisions. They might even disagree about little things that don't seem important at all—like what's for dinner or what time someone gets home. Maybe sometimes parents can feel so strongly about their differences that it may lead to arguments. However, these arguments are often over quickly.

As a family member, you should find out what it really means when your parents fight. When your parents get upset with each other, they might cry or say things they don't really mean. Most people lose their cool now and then, so if your parents are fighting, don't worry too much about it.

If your parents' fight really bothers you, you might find it hard to sleep or go to school.They may not even realize how upset you are until you tell them how their arguments affect you. You can also tell other relatives, a teacher or a friend.

Just remember that no family is perfect and arguments are common in every family.

My father left for our native place on Thursday. Don't you wish summer vacation could go on forever? I sure do. Whenever I think about going back to school, I feel depressing. The thought of waking up early and listening to teachers drone on and on make me want to cry! This year, my school begins on late August. During summer vacation, I never run into my classmates. But I can count on doing so at a office supply store the day before school starts. The school usually gives us a list of supplies that we need them for the year. For me, a couple of notebooks and some pencils are needing. The mall is another place I am likely see my classmates. Most students in America don't wear uniforms, so a new outfit for the first day of school was vital. Overall, back-to-school shopping doesn't have to cost too many. From kindergarten through high school, students don't need to purchase textbooks because schools provide it. Even though I'm not looking forward going back to school, at least I'm ready.
