“This is your last chance,” warned Mrs Gillfeather. I broke out in a sweat and my hands started to shake. We both wanted to get to sleep, but before we could, I had to put a cannula(针管) in her arm.

Before becoming a doctor I'd only a vague idea what a cannula was, coming from an hour spent with a plastic arm while at medical school. Once I became a doctor, however, I couldn't seem to get away from them.

For those of you who are lucky enough to have never come into contact with one, they're tiny little tubes that are put into a vein(静脉)so that fluid or medicines can do directly into the blood. That's the theory. Unfortunately, the problem is that for them to work, you have to get them into the vein in the first place. This tends to be trickier than you'd imagine—and it's a job that tends to fall on the junior doctors.

Mrs Gillfeather's veins were particularly elusive that evening. I'd been jabbing the needle in for at least 20 minutes.

“Isn't there someone else who could do this?” she asked, for the fourth time. “Someone who knows what they're doing, perhaps,” she said under her breath, just loud enough for me to hear.

Finally, I got it in. Mrs. Gillfeather and I both breathed a sigh of relief

Just as I was about to leave the ward, the nurse called me over, “Max, there's another cannula to do on bed 16.”

  1. (1) What does the underlined word “elusive” in Paragraph Four probably mean?
A . Hard to find B . Hard to understand C . Easy to describe D . Easy to reach.
  2. (2) From Paragraph Three, we can learn that the author______
A . was a younger doctor B . didn't like to be a doctor C . felt himself unlucky D . thought it easy to do the job.
  3. (3) How did the author learn to put the needle into the vein at medical school?
A . By imitating other doctors B . By doing it on his own arms C . By learning from parents D . By practicing with a plastic arm
  4. (4) What is the best title of the passage?
A . Practice was in vain B . An unfortunate doctor C . All my efforts paid off D . A medical accident

On 20th July 1969, millions of people saw Neil Armstrong take his first steps in space on television. Armstrong got out of the spacecraft Apollo 11, touched the ground of the moon and said, “That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

A conspiracy(阴谋)theory has existed since the night of his lunar handing. Armstrong's achievements were considered amazing, but people wondered if it really happened. Many people believe that the scene on the moon wasn't real. Rumours spread throughout coffee shops, street comers, and newspapers, but it soon died down.

But theories resurfaced in 2001 Suspicion began when an American television network aired a program called Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon? The show argued that NASA did not have the money for such a voyage, and that the whole scene was probably filmed in a movie studio. Many critics say that there were no stars in the background during the lunar landing, so it must have been a fake. They also point out that the American flag that was posted was waving. How could that be if there is no wind on the moon?

NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration)has denied these rumours many times. They explained that now photographers can capture the brightness of the astronauts with the dimness of the stars behind them. Also, they said that the flag was waving because the astronauts were pulling it back and forth trying to get it deeper into the rock. NASA also points out that the television program fails to mention that Armstrong and his team brought back 800 pounds of rock from the moon.

Nell Armstrong is seen as a national icon in the US and his lunar landing is one of the most historic events in the country's history. But either way, this conspiracy theory still exists today.

  1. (1) What didn't the TV program Did We Land on the Moon? mention?
    A . money B . stars C . the flag D . rocks
  2. (2) How did NASA react to the rumor?
A . It showed great anger B . It had to accept the rumor C . It turned a deaf ear to the rumor D . It gave explanations against the rumor
  3. (3) According to NASA, the American flag was waving because of______.
    A . the wind B . the astronauts' pulling C . the gravity D . the camera's moving

The American state of Colorado is considering a ban on smartphones for children younger than 13.

A Denver-based doctor - and father - is leading the effort. Tim Farnum is the founder of a group called ‘Parents Against Underage Smartphones.' His proposal would ban sales of smartphones to children under the age of 13. It would also ban sales to anyone who wishes to buy such a device for anyone younger than 13. The measure would also require sellers of smartphones to provide proof to the state government that they have asked buyers if the phone is for anyone under 13.

The measure now needs about 300,000 signatures in order to appear on Colorado's statewide ballot (投票权)next year. If it makes the ballot and is approved by voters, Colorado would become the first state to have such a ban.

Tim Farnum said he decided to push for the measure after watching his own children struggle with the mental effects of always having a smartphone around. "They would get the phones and lock themselves in the room and change who they were," he told The Coloradoan newspaper.

State Senator John Kefalas, a Democrat, said he understands the reasoning behind the proposed law. However, he told The Coloradoan that a child's smartphone usage is a "family matter" and not something the government should decide. "Ultimately, this comes down to parenting,” he said, “making sure their kids are not putting themselves at risk.”

Last year, the AAP (the American Academy of Pediatrics) released guidelines for media use by children. The group advised parents to limit time spent watching videos to no more than one hour a day of high-quality programming until age 6. After that, it said, parents should set reasonable time limits for their children and make sure electronic devices do not take time away from sleep or exercise.

  1. (1) What's NOT right about Tim Farnum's proposal?
A . It will be passed by the state of Colorado next year B . It needs 300,000 signatures to gain the ballot C . It bans buying smartphones for children under 13. D . It bans selling smartphones to children under 13.
  2. (2) What's the driving force of Tim Farnum's proposal?
A . Other parents' request B . His own children's addiction to Smartphones C . Smartphones' harm to children's health D . The guidelines released by the AAp.
  3. (3) What's the attitude of John Kefalas toward Tim Farnum's proposal?
    A . Positive B . Doubtful C . Disapproving D . Unconcerned
  4. (4) From the last paragraph, we can infer that______
    A . children under 6 shouldn't watch videos B . parents are to blame for children's media use C . parents should control children's media use D . electronic devices won't affect children's sleep

Why do some people eat too much? Is it because they're hungry? Or is there a scientific(explain)?

There are a number of theories to accountovereating. One factor depends on the time of day. “It's all part of a routine,” says Randy Seeley, professor of psychiatry in Cincinnati. “You're hungry at noon because that's the time you(eat)lunch for the past 100 days.” Another reason we may eat more than necessary is that the body needs to satisfy a salt and sugar balance. Drinking alcohol also increases appetite, because the body wants something (absorb) the alcohol.

(basic), overeating can also be a question of more biological factors. For instance, your body temperature can tell your brain that you feel hungry. “Your body temperature(drop) when it's time to eat, and eating warms you up,” says Gina Harlow, a paediatrics professor at Harvard University. Also, the smell of certain foods can make us imagine subconsciously the pleasure of eating. Harlow adds, “If you know you love French fires, (smell)them will make you want to eat them because you know how good they are,can lead to eating too many.”

So, the next time you realize you've eaten too much, don't worry about it. You can always blame it on science.

Last summer vacation I did some fruit-picking. It was an interesting but pretty hard work. I had to start at 7 am and pick eight hours. But it was such cheerful and full of funny. Some of we had guitars, so in the evenings we had barbecues and play a bit of music together. I only got about $80 a week, but at least they gave me all my meal, and the food was not that awfully. Basic accommodation was also supplying. However, I'm afraid I won't be going fruit-picking this summer, because I've got a temporary job in town what pays better.
