I've been researching my family tree since 1998 ,and I've long been curious about DNA as a way to learn more about my roots. The technology has come a long way in the last decade, and it's become more affordable too. Finally, I went ahead and ordered a Y-DNA test.

The results came in my email inbox from the DNA lab! When I logged in to see the results, there are 29 living people today with whom I share a common direct male ancestor in about the last 1,000 years. They live in Ireland, England, Scotland, South Africa, the United States and probably elsewhere.

I had two close matches, and the rest were more distant. They both live in Ireland! What makes the connection  to these two men so interesting is that most Irish genealogical (族谱的)records were burned in fires in Dublin and don't exist today. Without them, it's hard to trace Irish roots any further back than the 1800s. I've written emails to both of them and hope to hear back!

I did some more research on my Y-DNA and found my direct male ancestors were Celtics. They seem to have lived in Western Europe at the time of Ancient Rome. Migration patterns show that my DNA group likely originated in Western Asia, living there 20, 000 and 30, 000 years ago. There are relatives with similar DNA going thousands of years back in what is now Iran, India, Syria, Israel and Turkey.

I was so excited by these results that I decided to trace my motherly line too. My DNA is already at the lab, so now I just have to wait another month or so, and I'm sure to find more interesting things.

  1. (1) What is the author's purpose of doing a Y-DNA test?
A . To satisfy his curiosity about DNA B . To know more about his ancestors C . To find his families separated long ago D . To rewrite genealogical records in Ireland
  2. (2) Which of the following can replace the underlined word “matches” in paragraph 3?
    A . friends B . relatives C . ancestors D . competitions
  3. (3) Where did the author's family root in?
    A . Ireland. B . Western Asia. C . Ancient Rome. D . Western Europe.
  4. (4) How did the author feel about the results of the DNA test?
    A . Inspired. B . Relieved. C . Confused. D . Discouraged.

We all love bank holidays. In the UK, we only get eight bank holidays in one year, and at least five of those occur around Christmas time and Easter time! A bank holiday is a British English term. This is an official day that is decided by the government, when banks, shops and offices close for the day even though it's a weekday—usually a Monday, and a lot of people have a day off work.

Bank holidays are different in Colombia—firstly, they are called “festivos”. There are twenty festivos for the whole country in one year! In Britain ,people get more holiday allowance(津贴)than Colombians but fewer bank holidays. There can be even more festivos in Colombia, depending on which region of Colombia you live in. This is because different regions have their own holidays. For example, some regions have a patron saint(守护神) in their region, so they have an extra festivo to celebrate that saint.

However, there are some days that are national holidays for historical reasons. There is an Independence Day celebration on July 20 every year. This is just like Bastille Day in France on July 14, or Independence Day in the United States on July 4. Other important festivos in Colombia are :Labour Day, on May 1, and Columbus Day on October 12. Columbus Day is a historical bank holiday that almost every county on the continent of America celebrates. This includes Colombia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Mexico and the United States. It is a memorialization of the day that the Italian sailor, Christopher Columbus, first reached land on the continent in the year 1492. Many people criticize this day and say it is not something to celebrate because of the way Columbus and his teams treated the people that were already living there.

  1. (1) What is a “bank holiday” according to the text?
A . An official nationwide vacation. B . A holiday only for the bank staff. C . A British traditional religion festival. D . A celebration for Christmas and Easter.
  2. (2) What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A . Colombia and Britain have the same number of festivos. B . All Colombians have the same number of festivos. C . Colombians have less holiday allowance than British people. D . People in most regions celebrate a patron saint.
  3. (3) Why do many Americans refuse to celebrate Columbus Day ?
A . Because Columbus wasn't an American at all. B . Because Columbus once treated the locals badly. C . Because it wasn't Columbus that found America first. D . Because Columbus didn't live in the continent of America.
  4. (4) What is the text mainly about?
A . A British English term. B . Bank holidays in Colombia. C . Important festivos in America. D . Different bank holidays in the world.

Why I Love Cycling

One of the first things I did when I moved to a new city was hire a bike. Why? You travel much faster than on foot and you notice so much more of your surroundings than when in a bus or a car. It's more appealing to wander down small streets if they seem interesting, as you can quickly get back to the main road.

Besides, I soon discovered plenty more benefits to cycling.

A bike means that fewer places, especially in a small city like the one where I live now, feel far away. For example, cycling to work takes me half the time that it would to walk.

Of course, there are obvious health benefits of cycling—a bit of extra movement as part of your daily routine can help you keep fit and healthy. Cycling on my way to work also makes me feel more energetic in the mornings.

While cars pollute the environment, bikes are carbon-neutral. Furthermore, thanks to being petrol-free, bikes are cheaper to run, buy and fix than cars. Even if you don 'town a car, a bike can pay for itself when compared to the price of bus tickets.

Always wear a helmet, pay attention to other traffic and don't forget your lights at night. Make sure you know the road rules, especially in a new place. Some cities are more cycle-friendly than others. Luckily, where I live now is pretty easy to ride a bike around, thanks to having lots of cycle lanes and not too many hills!

A. However, be careful when cycling.

B. I have to learn to ride safely on the right of the road.

C. Importantly, cycling also helps to reduce your carbon footprint.

D. And sometimes city roads are difficult or unpleasant for cyclists.

E. Riding a bike also means you're not restricted by bus timetables.

F. Seeing a city by bike is ideal for settling in and learning your way around.

G. Cycling to work excellently fits for someone who wants to save their pocket money.

Watching one of the flag-raising ceremony in the capital left me a deep impression. On the morning of January 1, 2018,my parents and I go to the Tian'anmen Square. When they got there, a lot of people were already waiting. See the soldiers walking in sight, all of us felt exciting. Pacing in order, and the soldiers came to the stand. Then the mostly exciting moment came. The flag rose little by little with the familiar music, and we sang by it. The flag reached the top the moment the music came to end. Just then, cheers burst out from the crowds, what made me proud of our motherland.
