Thousands of people have headed to an area in the western United States to search for a hidden treasure. A wealthy art collector and businessman from the area named Forrest Fenn says he hid the treasure. The searchers follow nine clues(线索) from a poem that Fenn wrote. They consider the poem their "treasure map".

The treasure hunters believe the prize could be hidden in an area that starts in New Mexico and stretches all the way to the northern state of Montana. Many believe the treasure is real. Others, however, think it does not exist.

An estimated 350, 000 hunters from around the world have come to the area seeking the treasure. One of them is Sacha Johnston. She is a single mother. "I have been hunting for the treasure for five years and I'm not regretful about my choice." Johnston said. She thinks she has made good progress on guessing some of the clues. So, she's happy and has kept her search going.

Forrest Fenn spoke to VOA from his home in Santa Fe. The house is filled with priceless art pieces collected over his lifetime. He talked about volunteering to fight in the Vietnam War in 1968 and narrowly escaping death several times during his service.

Fenn said doctors found cancer in his body in 1988 and told him he only had about six months to live. So he decided to put pieces of gold, jewels and other valuables in a bronze box and leave it for others to enjoy after he was gone. But Fenn ended up beating cancer. Years later, in 2010, he decided to hide the box. "I wanted to give people something to look forward to and everyone is hopeful." he said.

When asked whether he thinks people are close to finding the treasure, Fenn said he really has no idea. "It is possible my treasure box could be found this afternoon, or it could be 100 years or 500 years. Who knows?" he said.

  1. (1) According to the first two paragraphs, what can we learn about the treasure hunt?
A . The clues are hidden in nine poems. B . The searching area is very large. C . Only a few people have taken part in it. D . Most people don't believe the treasure exists.
  2. (2) How does Sacha Johnston feel about her hunt?
A . She is uncertain about her hunt. B . She in tired of her hunt C . She is satisfied with her hunt. D . She is relaxed by her hunt.
  3. (3) Why did Forest Fenn start the treasure hunt?
A . To bring people a goal as well as hope. B . To celebrate his recovery from cancer. C . To let more people know about his poems D . To draw people's attention to war survivors

Over the past months, dozens of carmakers have launched models online, and tens of thousands of dealerships across the country are selling cars via livestreaming (直播).

As Chinese customers always have their smart phones at their side, they have been accustomed to shopping online. Moreover, the sales are made better received by virtual showrooms where customers can see the vehicles and interact (互动)in real-time about their prices and equipment.

To cater to the new trend, car salespeople need new skills in this world.Good product knowledge remains the basis, but if you want to be successful, you have to appear in livestreams like a type of TV presenter.

"Car salespeople are becoming entertainers, "said Michael Mayer, head of sales and marketing for Volkswagen brand in China. "The competition is tough, "he added. "Those who want to be found must always offer something new."

The contest soon escalated. In March, British brand Land Rover came up with a 30-hour livestreaming event, during which its new Discovery Sport was launched. GM' s Cadillac invited online celebrities (名人)to help sell vehicles in April.

In China, a young man named Li Jiaqi is believed to know lipstick better than anyone else. Almost every night, millions of girls and ladies wait for him to appear online and introduce new lipsticks. Li was invited in April to help market Cadillac's CT4. Despite the huge number of online viewers, none of them placed an order on the vehicle priced around 200,000 yuan.

Another online celebrity named Weiya helped attract orders for Roewe RX5 plus: 4,180 were sold in 30 seconds. The key, said industry insiders, was the discount. Christine, a marketing manager of an international carmaker tells China Daily that she believes livestreaming with online celebrities won't help sales. "In fact, if you give dealers the same discount, they may sell even faster," she said. "A lipstick is affordable for anyone, while a car is different. But bosses do not want their brands to remain silent, especially when others are seemingly having a good time."

Some bosses decided to try it themselves. Nio Chairman Li Bin explained products. The 40-minute live show on May 18 brought in a total of 320 orders, 5,288 test-drive appointments and sales valuing 128 million yuan. Orders continued to grow after the show and sales reached nearly 150 million yuan by the next day. WM President Shen Hui rapped (交谈) unskillfully. Its online launch on May 10 obtained 1,400 million views. In two days it received over 4,000 orders, and more than 30,000 people showed interest in the model.

He Xiaopeng, founder of Xpeng Motor, said "Many people ask me when Xpeng will do livestreaming. I am worried that it will become a data-falsifying (伪造数据) show. Everyone knows that the data is exaggerated (夸张). But if you do not do it, you will feel you fall behind."

Mayer said digitalization will continue, but that does not mean Volkswagen will make online sales the standard. He said it is more important to digitalize further process steps and thus work in a more customer-friendly and cost-effective manner.

  1. (1) Why is selling cars via livestreaming so popular according to the passage?
A . It is an avoidable trend that all car companies applaud. B . Companies can make the biggest profit via livestreaming. C . Vehicles sold online work in a more customer-friendly manner. D . Real-time interaction via livestreaming caters to customers' needs.
  2. (2) As car salespeople, what basic skill should they own?
A . Entertaining audience well. B . Knowing the cars for sale well. C . Making themselves famous. D . Appearing like TV presenters.
  3. (3) What does the underlined word "escalated" in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A . Became less serious B . Sprang up everywhere C . Became increasingly fierce D . Disappeared gradually
  4. (4) What can be inferred from Christine's words?
A . Discount rather than celebrities counts in selling cars. B . Car salespeople can sell better than online celebrities. C . The lipstick and the car share the same target customers. D . She thinks highly of livestreaming with online celebrities.

For over 70 years, UNICEF has been putting children first, working to protect their rights and provide the assistance and services they need to survive and develop all over the world.

It's the end-of-year giving season, and UNICEF has lots of good news to share about the influence its supporters have had on the lives of children. Thanks to its generous donors, UNICEF has helped save more lives than any other humanitarian organization.

Monthly donors are a major reason why UNICEF can make that claim, according to Karla Coello, UNICEF USA Senior Director for Monthly Giving. "Last year, UNICEF responded to 377 humanitarian emergencies, from conflicts to natural disasters," says Coello. "Emergency appeals bring in important revenue — but after the emergency, there are still a lot of things children need to make life bearable. That's what our monthly donors provide."

When drought destroys crops, conflict forces families from their homes, an epidemic breaks out or a disaster strikes, children suffer most. And in some countries, even the best of times are dangerous for its youngest citizens. Every day more than 15,000 children under 5 die from preventable causes.

Protecting children before, during and after a crisis requires a reliable source of funding. The constant stream of revenue provided by monthly donations enables UNICEF to reach children with what they need most when they need it, prepositioning emergency supplies before a disaster strikes and continuing to build sustainable solutions after an immediate crisis has subsided.

Monthly giving is also important to funding large-scale interventions(介入). Thanks to UNICEF's global immune campaigns, the world is now nearly free of polio(小儿麻痹症)and there are only 14 countries where mothers and children still face maternal and neonatal tetanus(破伤风)deadly threat. And UNICEF programs in 120 countries are helping to prevent and treat malnutrition, which is linked to nearly half of all deaths of children under 5.

"UNICEF USA monthly donors are our most engaged, most dedicated supporters," says Rebecca Volpe, UNICEF USA Manager, Monthly Giving. "So we do our best to make them feel appreciated by keeping them thoroughly updated about the powerful impact they are having and showing them how much they matter to us." In turn, monthly donors tend to be dedicated supporters. "Protecting children — giving them opportunities to play, learn, feel safer, heal — is critical to us," explained a survey respondent, expressing a commitment to children that UNICEF USA's Monthly Giving team sees every day.

Supporters who sign up with UNICEF USA to give monthly automatically become members of the Guardian Circle, which affords them benefits, including:

Annual statements to make tax time easier

An easy-to-use donor access that simplifies modifying gift amounts, updating payment methods and making other changes, including the timing of donations with the option to cancel at any point

Targeted communications in the form of monthly statements and a quarterly 8-page newsletter with stories from the field

A team available to answer questions via email or phone

"We have some donors who are on fixed income, others who can afford to make considerable monthly donations," says Coello. "Whether you give $5 or $700 a month, you are super important to us. What's important is that they all really want to give and help children. And that's amazing."

It can be time-consuming and difficult to track charitable donations. At end of year, Guardian Circle monthly supporters receive one statement that makes filing tax returns easier — and it's always delightful to see how much good has been done for the world's most vulnerable(受伤害的)children.

Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today's stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world's attention. Paparazzi(狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids (小报) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature. According to psychologist Christina Villarreal, celebrities—famous people—worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. "Over time,'' Villarreal says, "they feel separated and lonely."

The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century B.C., painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do.

Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. When they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minutes and keep their ‘story' alive forever.

If fame is so troublesome, why aren't all celebrities running away from it? The answer is that there are still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place. Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They are tired of being famous already.
