Nature's Warnings

When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind is strong, watch out! A dangerous storm might be coming. Storms are scary. Watch for flashes of lightning (闪电). Listen for thunder (雷). If nature sends these warnings, don't wait for rain. Act right away to keep safe.

Safety Steps

At the first flash of lightning, quickly get inside a building or a car. Do not go into a shed (棚) for protection. It is not closed like a building, so it is not safe.

Even after you are indoors, be careful. It is not smart to go near doors and windows. They can blow in or break. A room with no windows is the safest place to be.

Do not wash your hands during a storm. Do not use anything that runs on electricity (电) either. Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. Even if you really want to play computer games, don't! It is better to be bored than to risk getting hurt. Try reading a book instead.

If you can't get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place to be. Lightning is pulling toward tall poles and trees. Stay down in an open space and cover your ears to protect them. Loud thunder can hurt your hearing.

Lightning Strikes

Lightning does not hit people very often. It is not likely (可能的) that you will ever see that happen. If you do, call 120. Only trained emergency (紧急情况) workers should care for a person who has been hit by lighting.

If you follow these rules, you should stay safe during a storm.

Alexis Rocha is a 13-year-old boy from California, US. He weighs 147 pounds (67 kg). But six months ago, he weighed more than 202 pounds (91 kg). How did he lose all that weight in only half a year.

"One day, I was surprised to find that I weighed about 200 pounds," Rocha says, "I thought I had to do something about it."

Rocha is from a boxing(拳击) family – his father and his two elder brothers are professional boxers. So he decided to start boxing. He began with simple exercises, like sit-ups and push-ups(俯卧撑). Then Rocha started jogging(慢跑). "No kid likes running," he says. "I don't want to do it, either, but I have no choice but to keep on."

Months later, Rocha joined a boxing club in his city. He is always the first kid at the club to begin exercising, and the last to leave with sweat(汗水) on his face. Every day he boxes for about three hours.

"Rocha works very hard," says his coach, Hector Lopez. "It's surprising to see him lose the pounds quickly. I've never seen anything like this in my 20 years of coaching."

Rocha is very happy with his weight now. There is a family photo in his room from 18 months ago. "Each time I look at the photo, I laugh at myself. I was so big back then," Rocha says. "I look 100 times thinner and 1,000 times stronger now."

①You may often hear some myths (传言) about animals. For example, one dog year equals (等于) about seven human years, chameleons (变色龙) change color to match their environment … Today, let's talk about birds. It is said that if you touch a baby bird, the parents will completely abandon (抛弃) it. Do you really believe it?

②In fact, most birds have a very poor sense of smell so in most cases they are unable to notice the smell of humans on baby birds. Not only that, but most types of birds aren't so quick to abandon their young when they sense danger. Some types will even do their best to protect their young when they are in danger.

③Indeed, in very few known cases, parent birds sometimes abandoned their nests (鸟巢) from something touching their young, just because they noticed it by sight, not smell. When this happens, the parent birds usually won't care, other than (只会) to be a little more careful than normal. Sometimes, they may temporarily (暂时地) abandon the nest in order to better watch whatever disturbed (扰乱) their nest comes back.

④What's more, in most cases, even if the nest is destroyed by wind or something to that effect (效果), you could create a new one and put all the baby birds back in it, and when the parents came back, they wouldn't care that their baby birds were in a different nest, so long as you put the new nest near where the old one was so they can find it.

Young people often feel (焦虑的) when they and their parents have different opinions about something. They said that their parents don't understand them and are too .

(严格的) with them. Parents always don't (允许) their children to do this or that. What's more, they are always (比较) their children with other children. So some children often(争吵) with their parents. Parents often find it difficult to get their children's trust.

So (沟通) seems to be necessary, and it is also a (技能).

As young people, you like to do things without much thinking. So when you want to do something, you can't depend on what you like. (代替), you can ask your parents for some advice, because your parents are more serious. They will try to understand your life and your world, and (自愿给予) you something you need as possible as they can. In this way, you won't(造成) any trouble. You and your parents will understand each other better.

Jane is a warm-hearted girl. She is only ten years old, but she has big ideas of helping other kids.

Jane took part in a winter camp  the age of eight. During her stay in the camp, she went to visit some kids in poor areas. She felt sad that the kids there didn't have new clothes to wear and (toy) to play with. After she returned home, she kept thinking about  to do to help those kids.

One morning, Jane saw some elder kids (sell) lemon juice by the street. They wanted to raise money to help their friends. Then she came up with  idea.

 the help of her mother, Jane set up her first lemonade stand(摊位). In a week, it made $52.  it was only a little money, she helped 12 kids with it! She felt very excited when she saw smiles on (they) faces.

After that, her mother helped her start a program called Jane's Lemonade for Love. Up to now, she has already raised (many) than $17,000! She is going to spend the money on clothes, toys and books  the poor kids.

When should we use these words?

You may get some presents for your birthday. But what must you do when you receive a present? I think you should write a thank-you note. The words "thank you" are very important in everyday life. We should use them often. We should say them when someone gives us a drink or lends us some money. We should say them even when someone helps us to pick up something or hands us a letter.

Another important word is "please". Many people forget to use it. It is rude to ask someone to do something without saying "please". We should use it when we ask for something, too. For example, when we ask for help, we should use "please".

We should learn to say "sorry", too. When we have done something wrong to someone, we should say we are sorry. When we have kept someone waiting, we'll have to say "sorry". We can make people forget wrongs by saying "sorry".

These words mentioned above are simple but they are important. They are pleasing words to use in any language.
