Once upon a time, there was a hungry fox that was looking for something to eat. He was very1.No matter how hard he tried, the fox could not find any food.2he went to the side of the forest and looked for food there. He found a big tree3a hole in it.

He lifted his beard from under the quilt and put it above it. This also didn't feel right. So he put the beard under the quilt again. But he soon felt it would be better if it were out. The beard went in and out--first under the quilt, then over it, under, over, all night long.

Stan spent a sleepless night. In the morning, he was so tired and unhappy that he cut his long beard right off!

Stan's wife was so happy. She advised Stan to cut that beard off many times, but he never did it. Now a simple question made him do that.

Once there was a famine(饥荒).A rich cook sent for twenty of the poorest children in the town and said to them, "In this basket there is a piece of bread for each of you. Take it and come back to me every day at this hour for more."

In a hurry the hungry children got together around the basket, and fought over the bread because each wanted the largest piece. At last they went away without even thanking the good cook. Mary, a poorly-dressed girl, did not fight with the other children, but stood quietly in distance. When the badly-behaved children had left, Mary took the smallest piece, which was all left in the basket. She kissed the cook's hand and went home.

The next day the children were as badly-behaved as before. Mary got a piece of bread almost half the size of the one she got the first day. When she came home, her mother cut the bread open. Many new, shining pieces of silver fell out of it.

Her mother was very worried, and said, "Take the money back to the cook at once. The silver must have fallen into the dough(面团) by accident. Hurry up, Mary."

When the little girl gave the rich man her mother's message, he said, "It was no mistake. I had the silver pieces put into the smallest bread for you as a prize. Always be as satisfied, peaceable and thankful as you now are. Go home now, and tell your mother that the money is yours."

There are some easy things you can do to protect the earth:

Plant flowers, grass or trees.

Whenever you visit a park or beach, take away what you take there. Keep rubbish in a bag until you can put it in a dustbin(垃圾桶).

Turn off the lights and TV set when you leave the room. This can save a lot of electricity.

Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. You can save some water by not letting it run. Also, use a glass cup instead of a paper cup because this saves paper.

Give your old books and magazines to a library instead of throwing them away.

Give your old clothes to poor children you know instead of throwing them away.

Use both sides of paper.

Stop pouring dirty water into the rivers or lakes nearby.

Encourage all your friends to do the same things you do to help protect the earth.

You don't have to wait until Earth Day to do these things. Make every day Earth Day. If everyone makes a contribution(贡献) to protecting the environment, the earth will become much more beautiful.

Earthquakes usually come without warning. What should you do if this happens to you? An earthquake is dangerous, but there are still things you can do to protect yourself.

Stay calm as the earth begins to shake. Your chances of survival in an earthquake go up if you can keep calm. Staying calm is not easy, but it can save your life.

If you are inside when the earthquake starts, get under a table or a bed. You need to have something strong around you to protect you from falling objects. Do not stand near walls or windows and stay out of the kitchen. The kitchen is dangerous because of many glass objects.

lf you are outside, get to an open area as fast as you can. Stay away from building sand trees. If you are in a car, pull over to a place where there are no trees or tall buildings and stay in the car. If you are close to the sea, try to get as far away from the water as possible. Earthquakes can cause huge waves(浪) that can really harm the people nearby.

When the earthquake is over, there is still plenty of danger. For example, gas fire often comes with an earthquake. If you see a fire, quickly move outdoors to an open area.

Always remember to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Good reading habits lead you to a lifelong love of books. In order to encourage people to read more, China is planning to foster (培养) the habits of reading in its law. Although this has both good and bad sides, it can be seen as a way to develop one's reading habits.
