The 2020 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to former U.S. Poet Laureate (桂冠诗人) Louise Gluck. The prize committee cited "her unique poetic voice that with plain beauty makes individual existence universal". Gluck is the first American woman to win the award since Toni Morrison in 1993. Gluck, 77, joins a list of literary giants and previous Nobelists who include, in this century, Canadian short-story master Alice Munro, Chinese magical-realist Mo Yan, etc.

Gluck's work includes 12 collections of poetry and a few volumes of essays on literary writing. "All are characterized by a striving for clarity (清晰). Childhood and family life, the close relationship with parents and siblings, is a theme that has remained central to her," Anders Olsson, the chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, said. "She seeks the universal, and in this she takes inspiration from myths and classical motifs," Olsson added, citing her 2006 collection Averno, which the committee described as"masterly" for its "visionary interpretation of the myth of Persephone's (珀尔塞福涅) fall into hell in the captivity (囚禁) of Hades (哈得斯), the god of death".

Being a professor at Yale and a resident of Cambridge, Gluck also served as U.S. Poet Laureate from

2003 to 2004 and is no stranger to awards. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 for her collection of poems titled The Wild Iris, in which "she describes the incredible return of life after winter in the poem Snowdrops," the Nobel literature committee said Thursday. She also won the 2014 National Book Award for the poem Faithful and Virtuous Night. In 2016, President Obama awarded the National Humanities Medal to Gluck in a White House ceremony.

The publicity-shy Gluck did not immediately issue any comment about the latest honor for her body of work, which spans more than half a century. In a 2012 interview, she acknowledged that prizes can make "existence in the world easier" but did not amount to the immortality (不朽) of a true artist.

Recently a new network word "ghost" is popular on line, which refers to a sort of Internet social behavior that your net friends or loved ones don't answer your online messages or phones on purpose as if leaving the earth. Thus you often wonder whether those chatters are ghosts or pretending to be dead. This behavior is called ghosting in the English world, which means "playing with disappearance".

"Ghost" is better known as a noun referring to spirits of the dead, but "ghost" used as a verb which means "to disappear suddenly like a ghost", or "play with disappearance" is relatively unknown. Finally, owing to its high using frequency online, this usage has been added to the Oxford Dictionary of Contemporary English.

Playing with disappearance or ghosting also has different grades. Wendy Walsh, a professor of psychology from Boston University told us, "There are different grades of ghosting: If you just read on social software but never answer, you are only a lightweight ghosting player; if you meet a person several times but try to avoid him, you are an ordinary ghosting player; if you let your partner fall in love with you, but you suddenly disappear; which will give the other a heavy blow, you are a heavyweight ghosting player."

Why are some people accustomed to this kind of escapist social behavior? The Times reports that ghosting has a lot to do with how comfortable people feel and how they deal with their emotions. When they are in a complex interpersonal relationship, or it is too heavy for their weak mind to carry, they will have to choose to escape.

When you find yourself being ghosted, you may lose your self-respect, question yourself, or even hesitate to start the next friendship or love. How to get out of this emotional trouble? It's important to remember that when you're ghosted, it's the other's fault rather than yours. In addition, it's good to risk telling others how you really feel, even if it's not what they want to hear. Have you ever been ghosted? What do you think of this way of dealing with a relationship?

  1. (1) Which sort of the following Internet social behavior can be described as ghosting?
A . Leaving your friend after a quarrel. B . Love breaking up after a fight. C . Missing after getting friends' money. D . Not replying to net friends on purpose.
  2. (2) According to professor Walsh, if you just read but never reply online, you are a( n)      player.
    A . heavyweight ghosting B . non-ghosting C . lightweight ghosting D . ordinary ghosting
  3. (3) Which paragraph tells us the reasons why people are used to ghosting?
    A . Paragraph 2. B . Paragraph 3. C . Paragraph 4. D . Paragraph 5.
  4. (4) How should you deal with it when you are ghosted according to the writer?
A . Search out their identification on the Internet and reason with them. B . Never blame yourself and pour out your trouble to others bravely. C . Keep the trouble in mind and never tell others about it. D . Turn to psychologists or police for help rather than feel upset.

People often plan to receive medical exam but don't, resulting in increasing health care cost. A surprising number of citizens mean to complete tax forms in time but forget to, forcing them to pay unnecessary fines. Many families miss the government deadline to complete financial aid forms, losing out on aid available for child care.

How can policymakers help people follow through on important tasks? They use carrots and sticks: bonuses, late fees, or regulations. These methods can be clumsy, and often aren't effective for the situation at hand. Reminding people to form simple plans, however, provides a low-cost, simple, and powerful tool.

Evidence is growing that providing prompts (提示), which push people at key times to think through how and when they will follow through, make people more likely to act on tasks of importance. In one early randomized study on tetanus vaccination ( 破伤风疫苗 ) rates, for example, a team of social psychologists showed that 28% of Oxford University seniors got the shot after being encouraged to review their weekly schedules and to select a possible time to stop by the health center. They were also given a list of times when shots were available and a map showing the health center's location. Only 3% of the seniors got the shot when simply informed about how effective the shots were.

People who make a plan gain an advantage from their psychological forces. Specifically, they can overcome the tendency to put off as well as the tendency to be overly optimistic about the time it will take to accomplish a task. Imagine Sarah who wants to renew a car insurance, but it will require two hours of travel to and from a garage. Making a plan may lead her to take two hours off and have her responsibilities covered by her colleagues while she is away. Moreover, she will be less likely to underestimate the time needed to accomplish the task — a particularly common problem for complex tasks.

People mistakenly believe that their strong intentions are enough to push them to perform desired behaviors. These psychological research results stress the need for policy decisions that encourage plan making and improve social welfare.

  1. (1) What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 1?
A . Failure to achieve original intentions. B . Lack of task management skills. C . Disappointment of over-ambitions. D . Heavy burden of daily chores.
  2. (2) What does the randomized tetanus vaccination study show?
A . People need to think deeply before they act. B . Awareness of task significance matters in planning. C . Specific reminders help people accomplish plans. D . Seniors need encouragement to have vaccination shots.
  3. (3) What psychological benefit can people get from making a plan?
A . They are realistic in the time required. B . They are optimistic about the outcome. C . They are confident to overcome hardship. D . They are careful with task arrangements.
  4. (4) Who may be the intended readers of this text?
    A . Medical staff. B . Government officials. C . Ordinary people. D . Social psychologists.

Imagine that you are in a remote village somewhere with no medical clinic. Once the doctors get to you, they examine you and take blood samples, but they won't be able to help you until they take the samples back to the hospital to find out what is wrong. Thanks to engineer Andy Ozcan, many people may never be in this situation. He has invented an app that turns your mobile phone into a diagnostic tool.

Ozcan's invention is important because it is very accurate and easy to use. In many remote places, even if doctors have microscopes and other instruments to help them make diagnoses, there may still be other problems. Many doctors, for example, don't have enough training to correctly interpret what they see.

With Ozcan's mobile phone app, health workers can take a special photo of a blood sample and send it to a central computer at a hospital. The computer will then automatically interpret the photo and send a diagnosis back in a few minutes.

His technology only requires a mobile phone and an Internet connection. As more than four billion people already have cell phones, the cost of establishing the diagnostic system is fairly low.

By inventing a medical tool that uses existing technology—mobile phones—Ozcan has developed a medical tool that is both practical and economical. Therefore, it can be effectively used almost anywhere.

A. Another reason that Ozcan's invention is important is that it is inexpensive.

B. Even though you may only have a simple infection, you might die because of the delay.

C. People are trying to reduce the cost of this new medical tool.

D. Ozcan's simple, cost-effective tool might just save millions of lives around the world.

E. This tool has become much more popular all around the world.

F. You become very sick and must wait days until a mobile medical unit arrives to help.
G. As a result, they may diagnose illnesses incorrectly.
