On a cold winter morning, an old man sat against a wall at Sydney's Circular Quay station. I glanced his way for a moment but disregarded him and walked on.

On my way home that afternoon, I saw the same man in the same place. Two ambulance attendants were beside him. This time my step paused. He was old and in rags.

Shame rocked me. He must have suffered a lot in such cold weather. No one stopped. No one cared. Out of sight, out of mind.

A different season and I again came across an old man half lying on the footpath. Caught in the familiar rush, I barely glanced at him. However, the memory of the old Winter Man came back to me. I walked back to the man on the ground. He was dressed in smart clothes. I knelt down to ask if he was OK.

A flow of people kept walking by. He regained consciousness, though weakly, and it might be a good idea to call an ambulance, which I did.

He said to me, "Nobody stopped. Thank you. "Fighting back tears, I asked his name. "Greg, "he said. We looked into each other's eyes for a moment. As the approaching ambulance's siren proclaimed the arrival of help, a number of emotions rushed at me. I felt sadness pulling my heart for the Winter Man and shame that I had almost walked past another person in need. I was amazed that it had been so easy to be helpful.

Can you find your way to wealth and success?Napoleon Hill believes that if you have the right thoughts you can. In nineteen thirty-seven, after many years of researching business success, he published the book Think and Grow Rich. Even though it was published in the middle of the Great Depression(大萧条), it was immediately successful. Forbes magazine says it has been sold seventy million copies since it first appeared.

SmarterComics has published a version(版本) with pictures of the book. Franco Arda is the company's founder and publisher, who wanted to create picture books that could increase understanding. His version provides much of the information that is in full-length books but in an easy-to-understand form.

Mr Arda says, "Readers will understand and remember more about gaining success if they read the comic book version of Think and Grow Rich. Because it's pictured, it's easier to read and it's also easier to remember. Once you see something interesting, your brain can take it in much quicker and then you can remember it much longer. "

Mr Arda says he first read Think and Grow Rich when he was a teenager. The book was credited(把……归因于)to much of his financial success—it taught him to change the way he thought about money and success.

Mr Arda adds Napoleon Hill found that you must write down what you want to achieve, how and when you want to achieve it and what you are willing to lose for it. Napoleon Hill said you must read that statement out loud every morning when you woke up and every evening before you went to sleep.

Mr Arda thinks Think and Grow Rich shows that "Wealth is sure to be gotten by believing in personal ideas, and anyone can realise his dream by refusing to be stopped by sudden problems. "

History is a record of what has happened in the past.  The really fascinating thing is that much of history has been repeated time and again. It allows us to learn from the past, both the mistakes and the successes.

One of the benefits of history is reading how other people have overcome tremendous challenges in their life. These challenges, although particular to a person, or to a certain time in the past, or occurring in a different country or culture, all convey the same thing.

He encountered many failures while on the road to finally inventing the light bulb. He could be held out as an example of a person who never gave up.  However, he did not let those failures stop him. He had a dream and he just kept trying different things until he did reach success.

Or, consider the story of Abraham Lincoln who managed to become President of the United States even though he suffered many setbacks and personal losses. Most of us only realise his success.  His life was not easy. His story motivates us to keep moving forward no matter what obstacles we have in life.

A. History has a lot of influence on us.

B. Take the story of Thomas Edison for example.

C. History has some very unique qualities.

D. I am sure he was discouraged by his many failures.

E. They convey wisdom in their short stories of perseverance.

F. Few of us know about the many challenges he had to overcome.

G. Only those with courage to face challenges can realise their dreams.

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realised this time it was different.

"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop, "someone yelled.

Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊) through the smoke.

They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik Malay for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbours—some still in their pyjamas(睡衣)—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

"She might have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. "I know Makcik's still inside. "She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded at the door. "Go downstairs. Go now!Go!"
