I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving and never to come back was hardly in my head then.

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family

moves, I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got accustomed to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to"the hard times".

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles go away at last! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

  1. (1) How did the author get to know America?
A . From her relatives. B . From her mother. C . From books and pictures. D . From radio programs.
  2. (2) For the first two years in New York, the author _____________.
A . often lost her way B . did not think about her future C . studied in three different schools D . got on well with her stepfather
  3. (3) What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?
A . She worked as a translator. B . She attended a lot of job interviews. C . She paid telephone bills for her family. D . Her good command of English helped her family.
  4. (4) The author believes that _____________.
A . her future will be free from troubles B . it is difficult to learn to become patient C . there are more good things than bad things D . good things will happen if one keeps trying

Cloning is suggested as a means of bringing back a relative, usually a child, killed unfortunately. Some parents can understand that wish, but it must first be recognized that the copy would be a new baby and not the lost child. Here lies the difficulty, for the sad parents are seeking not a new baby but a return of the dead one. Since the original would be fondly remembered as having particular talents and interests, would not the parents expect the copy to be the same? It is possible, however, that the copy would develop quite differently. Is it fair to the new child to be placed in a family with such unnatural expectations?

Copying is also suggested as a means by which parents can have the child of their dreams. Couples might choose to have a copy of a film star, baseball player or scientist, depending on their interests. But because personality is only partly the result of genetic inheritance, conflicts would be sure to arise if the cloned child failed to develop the same interests as the original. What if the copy of Einstein shows no interest in science? Or the baseball player turns to acting? Success also depends on fortune. What if the child does not live up to the hopes and dreams of their parents simply because of bad luck?

Every child should be wanted for itself, as a person. In making a copy of oneself or some famous person, a parent is purposely specifying(指定) the way he or she wishes that child to develop. In recent years, particularly in the US, much importance has been placed on the right of individuals to reproduce in ways that they wish. So I suggest there should be a greater need to consider the interests of the child and to reject these suggested uses of cloning.

  1. (1) The underlined part"the difficulty"in Paragraph 1 means"_______".
A . cloning a baby is difficult B . it's difficult to give birth to a new baby C . the cloned baby can't replace the lost child D . the dead child can't come back again
  2. (2) According to the passage, one of the reasons why couples usually decide to clone babies is that _____________.
A . they want to bring back a child killed unfortunately B . they want to exchange their children C . they want to develop the same interests as their children D . they want to succeed in making a fortune
  3. (3) The sentence"Success also depends on fortune. "implies that ______.
A . the result may be unpredictable B . the child does not live up to the parents' hopes C . the cloned child fails to develop the same interests as the original D . the baseball player turns to acting

The cost of living in the United States is going up, notes writer Alissa Quart. As reported in The New York Post, Quart points to"the costs of housing, education, health care and child care in particular. "At the same time, a new study found that half of Americans born in the 1980s are falling behind their parents economically. Together, these findings show that many younger adults are experiencing"downward mobility. "In other words, they are not doing as well, either socially or economically, as their parents were at the same age.

In a study, researchers found that 90 percent of Americans born in the 1940s grew up to earn more than their parents. That percentage is so high, say the researchers, partly because of historical events. In the 1930s, the U. S. economy was in a severe depression, and most people's earnings went down. But in the 1950s, the economy expanded, and most people's incomes went up. As a result, almost all Americans born in the 1940s experienced upward mobility.

But among members of this generation, only about 60 percent of their children earned more money than they did. And only 50 percent of children born in the following 10 years were earning more than their parents at the same age. In other words, life is becoming less easy for Americans.

Quart and the economists who studied these issues say many things have led to lower incomes and downward mobility. The economic recession(衰退)of 2007 to 2009 is partly to blame, they say. Modern technology also plays a part. Quart says robots threaten to reduce the earnings of health care workers, truckers, reporters and people who work at supermarkets, drug stores and tax preparation services. In The Washington Post, Robert Samuelson noted that poor schools, a weak housing industry and too many government rules also are to blame.

  1. (1) What caused Americans born in the 1940s to experience upward mobility?
    A . Technological progress. B . Historical events. C . Encouragement policies. D . Positive employment views.
  2. (2) Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A . The standard of living of Americans is going down. B . Modern technology is holding back social development. C . Economic recession is having a lasting effect on America. D . There are too many social problems in America.
  3. (3) In the following part after the text, the author will most probably focus on _____________.
A . the future social development of America B . the particular situation of the rich class C . the probable solutions to these problems D . the negative effect of the high cost of living
  4. (4) What is the main idea of the text?
A . Young Americans are not as wealthy as their parents. B . Young Americans lack the ability to bear hardship. C . Downward mobility is troubling Americans a lot. D . Economic income decides people's quality of life.

Americans use many expressions with the word"dog". People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. However, dogs without

owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog's life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence.

Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.

This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.

People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.

Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dogs days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard.

A. Still, people say every dog has its day.

B. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.

C. Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways.

D. Dogs are their best friends and they are loyal to people.

E. There are many other expressions waiting for you to explore.

F. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs.

G. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care.
