Mark Twain left school when he was twelve. He had little school education. In spite of this, he became the most famous writer of his time. He made millions of dollars by writing. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, but he is better known all over the world as Mark Twain, his pen-name.

Mark Twain was born in 1835 and he was not a healthy baby. In fact, he was not expected to live through the first winter. But with his mother's tender care, he managed to survive. As a boy, he caused much trouble for his parents. He used to play jokes on all of his friends and neighbors. He didn't like to go to school, and he constantly ran away from home. He always went in the direction of the nearby Mississippi (密西西比河), where he was nearly drowned (淹死) nine times.

After his father's death in 1847, Mark Twain began to work for a printer, who only provided him with food and clothing. Then, he worked as a printer, a river-boat pilot and later joined the army. But shortly after that he became a miner. During this period, he started to write short stories. Afterwards he became a full-time writer.

In 1870, Mark Twain got married. In the years that followed he wrote many books including Tom Sawyer in 1876 and Huckleberry Finn in 1884, which made him famous and brought him a great fortune.

Unfortunately, Mark Twain got into debts in bad investments and he had to write large numbers of stories to pay these debts. In 1904, his wife died, and then three of their children passed away.

The following 4 famous paintings — from Jan van Eyck's portrait to Pablo Picasso's masterpiece — have stood the test of time.

The Amolfini Portrait

Jan van Eyck's Amolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through van Eyck's heavy use of symbolism — while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.

The Starry Night

Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas (帆布), a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint–Remy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modem Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of van Gogh's most famous works.

The Harvesters

The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.

Guernica

Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title 'Guernica' refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.

Devon Gallagher, a college graduate from Philadelphia, wants the world to know exactly where she's been during her worldwide vacation in a special way.

The traveler, who was born with a bone disease, had her right leg amputated(截肢) at the age of four. Although the amputation caused setbacks for Gallagher early on, she now sees it as inspiration for living her best life. To spread that message, Gallagher has taken to social media, where she shares photos of her travels across the globe, but instead of using geo-tag (地理位置标签), she writes her location across her artificial leg before taking a picture.

Now she has been taking pictures across the Continent, which show her cycling over the canal in Amsterdam, Holland, relaxing on a wall overlooking the city of Barcelona, Spain, posing with a waffle (华夫饼) in Brussels, Belgium, taking in the impressive Parthenon temple in Athens, Greece, and enjoying a river cruise in Budapest, Hungary, all with the well-known locations written on her artificial leg.

"I get a new leg every two years and I can choose the design on it. One day I had a sudden thought to get a chalk-board," Gallagher said. "My mum and grandmother weren't too keen on the idea, but my friends thought it was great and told me to go for it, so I did."

"When I'm writing on my leg, people often stare, looking puzzled, but once I share the photos, I receive only positive feedback. Seeing this, I feel much fired up and decide to try more. My leg hasn't stopped me from doing anything I've wanted to do. I don't know if it's my determination to prove to myself that I can do it, but regardless, I've been able to keep up with my peers and lead a pretty great life," said Gallagher.

Gallagher shows us that you should never let anything stand in the way of your dreams. And if life gives you an artificial leg, make art.

  1. (1) What message does Gallagher want to spread in her special way?
A . She suffers little from her leg amputation. B . She has become healthier after traveling globally. C . She looks on her misfortune as another form of blessing. D . She has exactly fallen in love with posting photos online.
  2. (2) How does Gallagher record her travels across the globe?
A . By keeping a personal journal of her travels across the world. B . By sharing pictures with locations written on her artificial leg. C . By describing the impressive scenic spots in detail. D . By interacting with her family and friends on social media.
  3. (3) What encourages Gallagher to continue in the face of others' confusion about her behavior?
A . People's positive feedback. B . The peer pressure. C . The recovery from her bone disease. D . The support from her relatives.
  4. (4) Which of the following can best describe Gallagher?
A . Helpful and ambitious. B . Friendly and generous. C . Determined and creative. D . Independent and sensitive.

Most of us don't reach for that gnarled (多节的) carrots when selecting our produce at the local supermarket. That's exactly why Americans waste up to 40% of eatable food every year. This unbelievable number has caused the "ugly food" movement, and inspired many companies to sell misshapen fruit and vegetables to consumers, rather than throw them in the trash.

One San Francisco organization is taking a unique approach to this idea. The Salvage Supperclub hosts fancy dinners inside dumper truck (自卸车) where they serve dishes entirely prepared with food that would have otherwise gone to waste.

Josh Treuhaft, founder of these ugly food dinners, originally came up with the idea to make people realize America's food waste problem. "There is undeveloped possibility that their food is going to waste for some reason, not to their own fault," he told Seeker's Laura Ling.

Treuhaft isn't alone in his effort to reduce America's food waste. A Change.org last year called for Whole Foods to become part of the ugly food movement. They sold misshapen fruit and vegetables in Northern California stores.

Selling imperfect produce is still relatively rare right now, which can be partially due to a supply issue rather than a lack of willing participants. Raley's, a Sacramento-based grocery chain, started an ugly food pilot program called "Real Good", but discontinued it after 90 days saying they had "some challenges getting the product". A grower might have large amounts of ugly produce one year due to terrible weather, but much less the next year if the weather has been more ideal. Harvests constantly vary and retailers are more likely to buy ugly produce in large number rather than just a few pounds at a time.

This is why organizations like Imperfect Produce and Salvage Supperclub are playing an important role in the prevention of food waste. Salvage Supperclub takes it a step further by not only buying the ugly produce, but turning it into a good dining experience as well.

  1. (1) What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A . People usually prefer good-looking produce. B . Gnarled carrots mostly appear in the supermarket. C . Many companies find new business opportunities. D . Americans eat less fruit and vegetables than expected.
  2. (2) Why does the Salvage Supperclub have dinners inside the dumper truck?
A . To prove his fancy idea. B . To advise people to dine in dumper truck. C . To show waste can be eaten. D . To remind people not to waste.
  3. (3) What's Josh Treuhaft's advice to reduce America's food waste?
A . People should reduce the ugly food. B . People should make full use of ugly food. C . People should be more aware of food shortage. D . People should develop their potential in producing food.
  4. (4) Why did Raley's stop its "Real Good" after 90 days?
A . Retailers' pursuing larger profit. B . Lack of enough steady amounts of produce. C . Bad harvests due to bad weather. D . People's unwillingness to buy imperfect produce.
