Several years ago, Illinois, the mayor of Chicago, decided to have vegetation(植物) planted on Chicago City Hall after he visited Germany, a leader in green roof(屋顶) design.
Green roofs are designed to save energy and collect rainwater. Roofs covered with plants help keep buildings cool. Earlier in 2008, researchers in Texas reported that green roofs can reduce(减少) a building's air conditioning costs by about one-fifth compared to black-top roofs. Besides, vegetation on roofs help stop water running off into streets and make the life of a roof longer.
Researchers say green roofs usually do not get much above 27, so temperatures might not be a problem for growing. However, green roof gardeners have to be careful not to put too much weight on the roof. This is true whether plants are grown in soil or water.
"Not all green roofs perform well." Mark Simmons, one of the researchers said, "Designs are different in keeping buildings cool and collecting rainwater. They have to be done right." In order to improve green roof conditions, researchers did many experiments. They compared products from different companies to help them understand how to make their designs work better.
Researchers also found some native(本地的) plants such as sedums which need little water. Therefore they can help the green roofs take in more water and help keep buildings cool. Today, the tops of some buildings in America look like farms as well as parks. Rainwater is used to grow lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and many other kinds of plants.
Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries. Have a look in your fridge, cupboard and fruit bowl and check the origins(来源) of the food.
Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt. You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from "field to plate", is called "food miles". A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer's field to the person who buys the food.
Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer(消费者). Why is this, and what are the effects(影响) of these long distances?
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market, so the food didn't have to travel very far. The consumers also did not travel very far because they went to their local market to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some disadvantages. For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are available in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import(进口) most of their food. This is because they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates(UAE), for example, gets 85%of its food from other countries. Even food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.
What's wrong with "food miles"? Is this not a good way of increasing international trade? I believe these miles are worrying for a number of reasons. First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more planes, lorries, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global(全球的) warming. In addition, food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty.
Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journeys. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer. Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food.
Olive oil(橄榄油) is probably most(广泛地) used for cooking. It is(制造) from fresh olives. Olive oil has been a main food in the Mediterranean(地中海) countries for thousands of years, and some olive trees which are hundreds of years old still(生产) fruits. The workers pick them and then they are(加工).
(几乎) everyone knows that olive oil is good for our health. But what most people may not(意识到) is that olive oil is used for a lot more than just food. People make soap out of it,(磨光) diamonds with it, and burn it for light.
These days, more and more people all over the world are discovering that olive oil may be the best oil for cooking, such as(德国), America and so on. So most of them use it for(日常的) cooking. And Italy is(闻名的) for the olive oil. Spain produces the most olive oil in the world, followed by Italy and Greece.
Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you" What is the most important in your life? ", maybe you will say" Computers and the Internet".
The(one) computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked(slow). Today computers are getting smaller and smaller. Butwork faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said, "People can't livecomputers today."
The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about twenty-three years later than computers. But now it can(find) almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, write letters, do(shop), play games or make friends.
Many students like the Internet very much. They often surf the Internet as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don't know their real(name), ages, and even sex(性别). They are so(interest) in making the "unreal friends" that they can't put their hearts into study. Many of them can't catch up with others on many subjectsof that.
We can use computers and the Internet to learn more about the world. But atsame time, we should remember that not all the things can be done by computers and the Internet.
