Reading is a good habit, but the problem is that there's too much to read, and too little time to read every word of it. So ①we need to find good ways to read faster. There are hundreds of skills (技巧) to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are especially good.
Preview (预看) —if it's long and hard. This skill is especially useful for ideas of heavy reading like long magazine articles (文章) and business reports (报告).
Here's how the preview goes.
●Read the first two paragraphs (段落) and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
This skill doesn't give you all the details (细节, 详情). It stops you spending time on things you don't really want or need to read.
Skim (略读)—if it's short and simple (简单的). Skimming is a good way to get ideas of light reading like popular magazines or sports and entertainment (娱乐) papers.
Here's how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep across each line.
●Pick up only a few ②key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but we'll get a similar (相似的) idea of what it's mainly about.

Choose words that begin 4 "th" and repeat them until you are comfortable with them. Let's 5: This, that, those, them, think…Read, read, read in English, of course!6 is one of the best ways to increase your vocabulary and 7 your grammar in a natural way. It's important to choose topics and books you are 8.When someone is talking in English, 9 the main points. If you hear a word you don't understand, ignore(忽略) it and go on listening. If you stop and think about the word, you will 10 everything else the person is saying. Always remember: Practice makes perfect.

Li Haoqin is an 8th grader in Mianyang, Sichuan. The 14-year-old girl studies hard in her English class. Every day, she listens carefully in class and does many exercises after class. However, she can't get good grades, so she is very sad. “Why doesn't my hard work pay off(回报)?”Li asks.
Lots of middle school students are now facing this problem: They try their best at something but can't make it.“ They don't have effective(有效的) learning methods. This is the main reason for their difficulties," says Bi Qin. She is a well- known English teacher in Beijing No. 4 High School.
Bi Qin thinks that hard work is not enough for middle school students. She says, “Students have more subjects now. They should learn in many different ways. The more you use new words, the better you can remember them. For example, making sentences with new words is an effective way to learn.”
Chen Xiping, 13, of Shandong, has his own way of learning English. “I study hard in school, and I also like watching CCTV-9. On this TV channel, I always see the English words from my textbook," says Chen. “It's really useful.”
