You pick up your phone and stare at it. The screen unlocks at once. But it won't do that for anyone else. The phone knows who you are. It recognizes (识别) the shape of your face. Welcome to the world of the latest iphone. It comes with a feature called Face ID.

Your face isn't the only characteristic you can use as a password. Many smartphones already accept fingerprint recognition. Other safety systems check the shape of the ear, patterns in the eye, or the way a person walks. All of these characteristics, called biometrics (生物识别技术), are unusual enough to identify someone.

People like using biometrics for safety because they're easy. You can't misplace or forget your own face. They're also usually very safe. It's hard to copy another person's body parts. But it's not impossible!

And the face may be one of the easiest body parts to copy. Most teens post plenty of photos online. These could probably help someone hack into (入侵) a safety system. In 2016, researchers at the University of North Carolina collected available Facebook photos. They used them to build 3D models of faces. Then they showed these fake faces to five different facial recognition systems. Four out of five let the cheater (骗子) in. (Face ID wasn't part of the test.)

Once a biometric password has been stolen, you can't easily change it. You can't get a new face! There's one more thing of Face ID that worries experts. It would be easy for someone else to hold your phone in front of your face to unlock it. For example, an angry sister or brother might do this to hack into your accounts.

Some people won't worry about all that. It's just so cool to use Face ID. As for me, l am always glad to use the new technology as long as it can make our lives easier and better. What do you think? Is it a good thing to you?

No matter where you are, humans are always checking time. Some of us are good at it—planning and doing things way ahead of time(提前), while others are always in a hurry. And that's only if you're on time. What if you are late?

So, how late is late? Many cultures take timekeeping very seriously, while others seem to accept lateness as just a common way of things. In different countries, people's opinions are different. In Latin America, things may happen five minutes, twenty minutes,an hour or even two after they were planned. In Sri Lanka, lateness is a part of the daily habit. In Rwanda, this is a place where it is not unusual to arrive at 11 a.m. for a meeting which started at nine.

On the other hand, German and Japanese people have a stricter view about time. In Japan, it is common to arrive ahead of time to attend a meeting. Those who arrived at nine to a meeting starting at nine a.m. would be late in other people's view. In Germany, however, if a dinner party were to begin at eight, a person who arrived five minutes earlier may walk around the block to make sure that they get there at eight on time, without being too early or late.

People often ask me for advice about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I'll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.

One thing I can tell you is that, once you've started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you're riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about "How would I say them in English?" At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I'm in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It's amazing how much this helps.

For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because l didn't want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I'd try to hang out with friends who couldn't speak Chinese, so that I'd have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.

Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you're writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.

  1. (1) How long did the writer learn English in Wuhan University?
    A . For a week. B . For a month. C . For a term. D . For a year.
  2. (2) According to the writer, it is amazing and helpful to__________.
