The other day I was shopping at a local store when I came across a lady from India squatting (蹲) on the floor and looking for a certain product on the bottom shelf. She stood up quickly when she saw me as if to get out of my way. Feeling sorry, she explained that she was a cashier at a nearby store and was on her lunch break, trying to get a few needed things before her time was up.
I comforted her, "I am in no hurry. Go ahead and do what you need to do. I have plenty of time." While she was searching for something, she said that sometimes customers were rude to her at the store and that she was really thankful for my kindness. I told her that I had noticed cashiers being treated rudely by some people and that those people needed to be more understanding.
She thanked me for being so nice and friendly. I told her, "The world would be a better place if we all acted kindly toward each other. Those who are rude may learn their lesson finally for treating people badly." She nodded and broke into a big smile and covered her mouth with her hand, laughing as she walked away.
It felt so good that I may have helped someone feel better for even a few seconds. In the brief exchange I showed her there are good and kind people in the world and may have added to her belief in humanity (人性). Maybe she thought about that later in the day, perhaps when someone was treating her unkindly.
In the distant past, friends relied on each other for their survival. They hunted together and defended each other against (danger) animals and enemies. In those days, if you didn't have a friend, you would either starve, (eat) or killed. Nowadays, friendship isn't (exact) a matter of life and death. However, friendship is still of great importance and not having a friend is something to be (concern) about. Most people look upon a friend as someone they can depend on when they are going times of trouble. In such times, friends provide them with emotional support and sometimes financial help. It is in these troubled times they find out who their true friends are. As the old saying (go), in times of success, friends will be plenty; in times of (suffer), not one in twenty. And there is another saying says you can hardly make a friend in a year, but you can easily upset one in an hour. So do your best to get along with and be grateful to all those who (be) willing to side with you even when you are in trouble as they are your true friends.
If there were no natural reserves, more animals would become extinct.
An inspiring, optimistic friend can your life.
Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without them, students' academic growth and emotional health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.
Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in maths and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by the College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students' academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education.
Music programmes in public schools also help to add to a student's sense of pride and self-confidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-confidence problems, relationship troubles, and other troubles. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse found that students who took part in school music programmes were less likely to turn to drugs. Music programmes encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.
Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries (界限). Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet (二重奏) with an American classmate. Although they could not communicate verbally (口头上), they were able to read the music in order to play the duet. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.

Students from Oceanside High School in Rockland will be able to sleep in a little longer from this autumn.
Regional School Unit 13 Superintendent(负责人) Lew Collins said during the school's Thursday night meeting that the schedule(时间表) for the schools will be changed. Oceanside East and West will start a half hour later, at 8 a. m. for their new school year.
Research has shown that teenagers' brains are often not fully awake at 6: 30 a. m. Collins said the schedule, which is used to get students to school for classes that begin at 7: 30 a. m. , calls for some to get on buses before 6: 00 a. m. to get to school on time. Teachers are having meetings at 6: 40 a. m. , which is too early, he thinks.
Collins visited the high schools in Rockland and asked students when they would like classes to begin. Most of them said 8: 00 a. m. "I was surprised. I thought they would say 9: 00 or 10: 00, "he said.
The National Sleep Foundation says on its website that teenagers' biological clocks(生物钟) are designed to stay up later and get up later. The Foundation called for schools to change their schedules, which means a later start as well for elementary students(小学生).
"We do not have enough buses to run, since all the high school and elementary school buses run almost at the same time, "Collins said. He suggested, "We should buy six more buses and get six more drivers to keep the new schedule working."
Elementary school classes in Rockland now start at 8: 30 a. m. , but will be moved to 8: 45 a. m. , starting in the autumn. "I know this is a problem for working parents, but we will see what we can come up with, "said Jane Brown, a teacher at Bardonia Elementary School. "Anyway, I believe if students get more sleep they'll be more ready to learn when classes start, "she added.
