“Sorry, kiddo. That's mine. I'm13on your debt.”

“Huh?” Then I remembered the loan. “Hey! How can it be that much? I 14borrowed $10.”

“True,” she said, “but interest has been compounding for eight months. Now you 15me $21.43.” She paused, then added. “You can pay me the $1.43.”

I 16to believe that a $10 loan could more than double so quickly. Much to my17my sister got her pencil and tablet and showed me exactly how it all added up.

My head18as I tried to keep track of Kathleen's 19 but this time, I got the basic idea of compound interest. I 20the hard way that borrowing money can be “double trouble” in no time.

How I Failed My Oxford Interview

As soon as the words left my mouth I knew I'd1. "You think Jane Austen is... soft?" The man opposite me asked in disbelief. Then, he and his colleague took turns to2my claim, finishing each other's sentences as they stressed Austen's novels were, in fact, savage.

"I just mean..." I said in a3voice, trying to keep the tone light, "that she's not as biting as Virginia Woolf."

The two professors patted this idea around, too, like a couple of cats toying with a frightened bird—giving 4 examples of how Austen's work was, 5, more biting than Woolf's. With no more defensive action to take, I simply smiled and said, "Let's just agree to disagree, shall we?" And at that moment, my dreams of going to Oxford university6in a puff of smoke.

Part of my problem, in hindsight was a lack of confidence.7I was a straight A student and had prepared for the interview to the best of my ability, I wasn't a skilled debater. When faced with two experts who told me that I was wrong, instead of defending myself, I rolled over and accepted8.

To pass the interview, you need confidence, of course. You also need  a9 passion for your subject, not just a keen interest. In other words, don't put comments on your personal statement that you don't have10for your in-person backup.

So, months later, I already knew the contents of my thin envelope when it appeared on my doormat. 11, I felt a pang of disappointment. I had wanted to go to Oxford since I was 13. I used to look up images of my favorite college with the same12of a bride-to-be browsing wedding dresses.

Ultimately, I didn't have what it took—but, looking back, that was13a bad thing. Instead of going to Oxford, I found a university that was a better fit for my interests. I loved my eclectic course, where I could write an essay comparing Jane Eyre to 50 Shades of Grey.

Failing my Oxford interview also provided a valuable life lesson. I'm now more confident in my opinions, more passionate when it comes to debate, and I try to back up my points with14evidence. What's more, I had never since ended a discussion by giving a 15smile and saying," let's just agree to disagree, shall we?"

There is an interesting story about how Pablo Picasso, the famous Spanish artist, developed the ability to produce an amazing work in just minutes.

As the story goes, Picasso was walking through the market one day when a woman 1  him. She stopped the artist, pulled out a piece of paper and said, "Mr. Picasso, I am a fan of your works. Could you do a little 2 for me, please?"

Picasso smiled and 3 drew a small, but beautiful piece of art on the paper. Then, he 4 the paper back to the woman, saying, "That will be one million dollars." "But Mr. Picasso, it only 5 you 30 seconds to draw this little masterpiece," said the woman" My good lady, I spend 30 years 6 to draw that masterpiece in thirty seconds." said Picasso.

Picasso isn't the only 7 man who worked for decades to master his craft. His 8 is typical of many creative geniuses. Even people of considerable talent 9 produce amazing work before decades of 10. The researchers found that most groundbreaking work 12 during the late thirties — at least a full decade into any personal career. Even in the fields of science and maths, creative 13 is often made after more than ten years' work.

These findings 14 the work done by previous researchers as well. For example, a study 15 at Carnegie Mellon University by professor John Hayes found that out of 500 famous musical pieces, nearly all of them were created after ten years of the composer's career. "One Person Can Make a Difference" is one of those sayings that we teach youngsters. It is to 1 them to do something kind or 2 another person.

As adults, do we really believe this? Or is it a lesson just for 3 people? I am writing to tell you that 4 "one person can". Because one day one person did an act of 5 that changed my life and the lives of millions more.
