While most teams in this situation would be desperately trying to regain their 6 for bravery and will to fight, his team just seemed to slowly walk around, 7 sunflower seeds, and laugh at jokes made by teammates. The next time you get caught jumping on your bed you can tell your parents with a straight face that you are not playing, simply getting ready got a promising career in “Mattress Jumping”. Believe it or not, there are some people who actually get paid to do that! According to Reuben Reynoso, a professional mattress tester at San Francisco's McRoskey Mattress Factory that still makes every mattress by hand, it is real work and needs some training. For a start, it's not all about jumping to new heights or doing tricks like professional athletes, but rather about feeling each area of the mattress carefully to detect the filling. In order to do it right, every bit of the mattress has to be tested slowly and deliberately.
Over the years, Reynoso has figured out the perfect routine. He begins by placing a protective mat over the mattress so that it doesn't get dirty or absorb the smell from his feet. Then begins the fun—he steps to the middle of an edge and then takes five steps back and five steps forward. In this way, he slowly but surely, covers the entire surface. The key according to him is to find the perfect number of jumps—Too many and he will end up destroying the mattress completely. Too few And it will not fit into the giant machine for that final sewing! Who knew a job that sounds so simple could have so many skills!
While Reuben will not reveal how he got into this profession, he will admit that it is more fun than being a carpenter, roofer, construction worker and railroad engineer—all jobs he has tried previous to finding his true profession!
Rick Stevenson, 16 years old, spends every minute he can on the mountain. He and his friends go snowboarding every weekend." It's incredible. No one goes skiing anymore," he says. "That's for the1folks".
Today more and more young athletes are taking part in risky activities called "extreme sports", which are a new, words such as" rage", "Juice" and "energy". They have their own 2 words such as "rage"," juice" and "energy". They have their own clothing such as skin-tight bicycle3in rainbow colours. And they're not for the elderly people or the easily 4 ones. Their philosophy is to get as close to the5as possible.
Young athletes want risk and excitement—the 6 to the edge the better. They snowboard over cliffs and ride mountain bikes down steep mountains.
Extreme sports started as an alternative to more expensive sports. A city kid who didn't have the money to buy 7 sports equipment could get a skateboard and have fun. But now it has become a whole new area of sports with specialised equipment and high levels of 8.
The X Games is an extreme sports competition, consisting of two versions: a summer competition and a winter competition. The first summer 9 was held in Rhode Island in 1995. The summer competition 10sports such as sky surfing, where people jump from aeroplanes with surfboards 11 to their feet. The winter competition12snowboarding, skiing and snowmobiling.
What makes extreme sports so popular?
"People love the 13 ,"says Murray Nussbaum, who sells sports equipment. "City people want to be 14on the weekend and do something challenging. The new 15 is so much better that people can take more risks 16 getting hurt:" He adds."17you go mountain biking or snowboarding, it's impossible to go back to bike riding or skiing. It's just too boring.
Extreme sports are certainly not for 18.Most people still prefer to play baseball or basketball or watch sports on TV. But extreme sports are definitely gaining 19. "These sports are fresh and exciting. They're the wave of the future. The20is huge," says Nussbaum.
In July 1984, the famous author and runner Jim Fixx died of a heart attack while running. One 1 from his death: just because you run does not mean you are safe from heart problems. Thirty-five years later, Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray is 2 that message. "Being fit and being healthy aren't the same things," he says. McGillivray, a 3 runner, should know it. Six months ago, he had heart surgery after suffering chest pain and shortness of 4 while running. McGillivray's family had a long history of heart problems. "I honestly thought that 5 exercise, cholesterol-lowering (降固醇的) medicine, good sleep and the right diet, I'd be fine," he says. "But you can't run away from your 6."
Aerobic exercise (有氧运动) such as running, walking, 7 and swimming is known to reduce the risk of many health problems. But new research is questioning the value of "8exercise". In a study 9 in December, researchers in Spain found information suggesting that full marathons, 10 the famous Boston marathon, might injure the heart. Dr. Kevin Harris is a cardiologist (心脏病专家). He notes that running is a good activity, 11 the act of running "doesn't make you invincible (不可战胜的)". Harris adds that people who have a family history of heart problems should talk with their health care providers 12 running a marathon. " 13," he added, "men who are older than 40 and those people who have symptoms (症状) they're concerned about".
McGillivray says his doctor allowed him to race in the upcoming Boston Marathon. He has 14 in it every year for 47 years. "My new mission," he says, "is to create 15. If you feel something, do something...You might not get a second chance."
