My car and my best friend

For most, getting your first car opens up a new world of freedom and allows you to go wherever you want, whenever you want. Getting a car did 1 this for me, and it also brought my best friend and me 2. But then it tore us apart (分开).

My best friend lives three minutes from my 3. Since her 4 is in late summer, seven months behind mine, I basically became her 5 when I turned 16 in December.

And so I 6 her up for school and took her home. We made ice-cream 7, went shopping and to the movies all in my car. I would drive to her house just to sit on her bed, read magazines and have a good laugh. I went to her house so 8 that she gave me a key 9 her house.

A week after I got my license (驾照), she was with me 10 I had my first accident. She was there and 11 me and we kept it a 12, since I didn't want people to 13. From then on, through thick and thin (共患难), it was just me , my car and my best friend.

High school is a time of 14, but I couldn't 15for a long time 16we became so distant (疏远) after being so close. My friend waited three months after her birthday to get her dream car:a green 2004 Beetle. With its 17, the passenger seat of my car became 18. Our car trips became less frequent (频繁的) 19 I didn't even drive down her street.

It's funny how a car can change a relationship so much. I had wanted her to get a car, but once she did, I 20it. I wanted her friendship back, even if it couldn't be the same.

Until I was 13, I assumed I was just like everyone else. But one day I read a piece of paper in my dad's briefcase that 1 everything. That's when I saw the words: “Simone is said to have Asperger syndrome.”

I screamed at my dad, “Tell me what it is!” He 2 that I have a mild form of brain disorders, which was a problem that shapes the way I interact with other people. I wasn't sure exactly what he 3, but it didn't matter. I just wanted to try to 4 my shock and go back to the way things were before I knew.

But even though I wouldn't 5 acknowledge the news, Asperger's still destroyed my confidence and made me6 and isolated. I felt like an outcast(被抛弃者)—not just because Asperger's made it hard for me to make friends, but because now I had this 7 . I just wanted to be like everyone else. 8, at 16, I said to myself, “Enough! You can't run and hide from it, girl. Just face it.”

It's funny, the first time I thought something was 9 was not because of what I couldn't do — it was because of what i could do. In the sixth grade, while other kids were 10 with spelling, I was like a human spell-checker! I've also had a photographic memory, and 11 I call my “super powers”—extrasensory hearing and acute awareness: I can 12 phone numbers people dial just by the sound the buttons make when pressed or 13 hear one sour note in an entire symphony! And I can 14 pay attention to two things at once.

Don't get me wrong. Asperger's can be very confusing. For years I felt like a butterfly 15 in its cocoon(茧), waiting to emerge. It took years of work with a psychologist to 16 the difficulty of making friends.

I'm not going to let Asperger's create 17 for me. That' why I am happy to have found out about and faced my 18. Asperger's is a metaphor(象征) for life: We all have 19 , but the key is to be able to have the20 to face what's bad about them and still find what's good.

    "Why?" I questioned.

"Because I need to keep my skills up," he explained." I 16 math, but I need to take it so I don't forget how to do it."

"For college," he added. "I want to do 17 well in college, Mom. I know it will be hard, but I think it's 18 that I try to do my best."

My oldest son wasn't perfect. He wasn't a math talent, either. But he knew what was important: he was focusing on his future while I was worrying over his 19. And that, to me, is even better than being 20.

You know9a single moment feels like an hour? Well, in that moment, I realized I had10things were all bad for them, but they weren't. And I understood we all have the11to make moments of12happen.

One day I walked into the office, and my computer screen showed me the following 2.

"Your password has expired(期满). 3 'Change password' to change your password." At my 4, the Microsoft Exchange Server is 5 to ask thousands of employees to change their passwords every 30 days.

When my daughter was very young, she broke my favorite cup. She was moving it aside, and it slipped from her hand and broke on the floor. I loved that cup and was really1 , but of course I didn't2her. It was an accident. She didn't mean to3 it. Intentions matter. Or do they?

I can't help but feel that our modern world doesn't 4 intentions. We are all so ready to find 5 with another person and so concerned with our own6 that we don’t consider the intentions of others. There are endless opportunities to be 7 these days in the celebrity news cycle, in politics and in our own interpersonal interactions. Every single day, someone is 8 on social media for something they have said or done.

A friend of mine says, "It's not how the message is intended it's how it's9". He means that we need to be careful when considering our words because they can10be misinterpreted by the person we are11

We all at times express ourselves 12 , make errors of13or have a moment of14when we say the wrong thing. All of us have 15 someone at some point in our lives.

The Internet is full of people seeking to make things worse. But there are also many nice people who occasionally get things 16 or simply do not know better.

I get that there is much to be angry about. The world is full of17. The actions and words of other people can cause harm;18, the actions and words of other people matter. But intention has to mailer, too, for us to make sense of the world and for us to effect change. 19 intentions can help us to feel better about our fellow humans. When we appreciate intention, it can help to ease the20of their message.

Ten years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people are1 in the right place at the right time, while others consistently experienced ill fortune. I placed 2in national newspapers asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky to3 me.

Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research. Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had them4various experiments.

I carried out a simple experiment to discover whether their differences in5 was due to differences in their ability to6opportunities. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, and asked them to 7 it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had 8placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying… "Tell the experimenter you have seen this and win$50."

This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than two inches high. It was staring everyone straight in the face, but the unlucky people tended to 9 it and the lucky people tended to spot it.

Unlucky people are generally more10 than lucky people, and this anxiety affects their ability to notice the 11. As a result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to gatherings focused on finding their perfect partner and miss opportunities to make good friends. They read newspapers 12 to find certain types of job advertisements and miss other types of jobs.

Lucky people are more13and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. My research eventually showed that lucky people create good fortune via four14. They are skilled at creating and 15opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition(直觉),create self-fulfilling prophesies(预言) via positive expectations, and adopt a "never say die" attitude that transforms bad luck into good.

My daughter loved dance, until she didn't. After an1first year, I noticed her interest fading week by week. Then, one day, she slowly walked to me before class and asked if she could just 2 it.

My first reaction was to 3 her to "finish what you start".4, sticking with something difficult can teach perseverance (毅力), discipline and confidence. But watching my first-grader 5herself into each ballet position, I started to question how much6that "blanket advice" made. Is it really in my kid's best 7, or even practical, to make her stick to every commitment through until she reaches a bitter8? What if there are different but 9 valuable qualities, which can be gained by 10 the things that are not right for her?

With the winter show approaching, I realized she needed to either 11 her class or commit herself to it. After a few days' consideration, she 12 dance wasn't for her — a choice I 13. Quitting is never a black-and-white issue. Sometimes, it means 14 a barrier in your way to love something else. In my daughter's case, ending dance made space for her new hobbies, such as horseback riding and Girl Scouts. She's into them for now, but it is okay if that 15 changes.

As adults, we are accustomed to16the power of saying yes, but what about saying no? The ability to recognize when something isn't an 17investment of our time or energy is also important. As my daughter gets older, I want her to feel confident to 18 something that's no longer meeting her needs. She shouldn't be held back by the thought that she must 19 something at any cost 20 because she has started.

Years ago, I had a quarrel with a friend owing to a misunderstanding. It was. 1my fault, but I was afraid to admit that I was wrong, so we didn't speak for a long time. Several years later we came across each other and decided to meet for lunch. It was so2that we kept meeting. After two or three meals together, I felt3to apologize for my behavior years earlier.

My experience is never unique. Many people4apologizing because the idea of admitting to wrong behavior makes them5uncomfortable. Apologies force us to admit to ourselves that we don't always6our own standards. We might also fear that the victim won't  7our apology. We all like to8ourselves as good people—as kind, honest and considerate. For these9, an apology can be very difficult to give.

Given my10, there is no doubt that an apology is a vital tool for11a relationship to make it functional again. Usually, a(n) 12apology is called for, but if the victim is angry at the wrong behavior, it may be more13to wait, because their14may prevent them from accepting our apologies. But a heartfelt apology has more powerful effects, which can improve our mental health and repair our17 personal relationships. 18, expressing regret and acknowledging responsibility are equally vital. Without 19, it's a good reason of your actions; without responsibility, it's an excuse.

My friend and I had lunch recently, 15 years after my belated apology. Admitting that everything had been my fault helped us heal our relationship. We're both20to have our friendship today.

Three days after the Paralympics began, a positive case was found in my hotel.8, there must be 7 days' or 14 days' quarantine.

9I wasn't pleased with the idea, it didn't10my excitement to attend the Winter Paralympics. I thought, the11thing to do is to start preparing immediately. Being limited to a small space for the time can have12effects on one's mental health. I began to think of what makes me feel comfortable in my home. I began to make a13of things: delicious food, sweet soaps, my bedding….

People might dislike the14of quarantining outside their homes. But if you can prepare yourself with the things you know, it will make you most15. If you think you have more than many others, you'll find it's not as bad as it might seem.
