I’m not the kind of mother who often brushes her daughter’s hair, and my daughter has never liked sitting quietly long enough for me to do it.
But today, I took a chair outside and let my daughter Kitty sit on it. She was sitting high with her eyes closed, skin still wet from the shower and her messy hair behind her back. I realized she was taking in every touch from my hands. Today we would send Kitty away for a week of a summer camp. This was all my idea.
She's nearly 12, and I notice that I'm with my child nearly 24 hours a day. Living on the farm without neighbors, Kitty has become increasingly dependent(依赖的) on me.
After lunch, we drove to the camp place. After we got out of the car, we were introduced to the other children. Kitty followed me closely, holding my hand all the time. "I need you for a few more minutes” she said to me, horror in her eyes.
I pulled away and walked up to a camp worker. “Excuse me," I said loudly, “I’d like to introduce you to my daughter. Maybe you could help her meet a few of these kids.” He came over to talk to Kitty and I kissed on her face. Then we all disappeared before Kitty realized we had left.
On my way home, I felt a piece of my soul(灵魂) had been taken away from my body. I began to shake.
Tears came down my face. When I arrived home, I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path. “I want Kitty to have a chance to find herself, out of my shadow (影子) . If I don’t set her free, I'm afraid she won't be independent (独立的) forever.” I said to myself.
【1】How long would the camp last?
A.5 days. B.7 days. C.12 days. D.24 days.
【2】What does the underlined phrase “taking in" mean in Paragraph 2?

【3】How did Kitty feel when she arrived at the camp?
A.Cool. B.Excited. C.Scared. D.Tired.
【4】Which of the following about the writer is NOT true according to the passage?
A.She thought it good for her girl to go camping.
B.She was willing to do everything for her girl.

【5】What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Kids should not stay with their parents.
B.Kids should often go out for summer camps.
C.Parents should not give their children any help.
D.Parents should help their children to be independent.

Everyone needs friends. There is one old saying: Friends are God’s way of taking care of us. But how do you find real friendship and keep it?
The Care and Keeping of Friends by American author Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways of finding friends.
Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed and take care of it to make it grow. First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. To make a friend, you can not be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.
But things can not always be happy. What should you do when you have a fight with your friends? You have to talk to them. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, you could write a letter. Sally says there are three steps to be friend again. Tell him or her how you are feeling, say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that.
The book also has advice on some small but important things like celebrating your friend’s success. Make sure to read it if you want to find real friendship and keep it.

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. 【1】
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. 【2】
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Some scientists found that children who had older brothers or sisters were often bullied(欺侮) by their older brothers and sisters. So they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may also be shy. 【3】 They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. 【4】 One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they blame(责备) themselves for their failure. In Israel, people often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say it is possible for you to get over your shyness. 【5】 And don't forget—if you are shy, you are not the only one.
