There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water his flowers, he used two buckets(桶). One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very dilapidated one, which had been used for many years, but was now past its best.
Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the road, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It happened to me recently that I was telling someone how much I enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams from My Father and how it had changed my views of the former US president. The person I was talking to agreed with me that it was a wonderfully written book. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama, which showed that he had no idea of his background at all. ______ Nearly two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t read. In the World Book Day survey, Dreams from My Father is at number 9. But I am pleased to say that I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s absolutely outstanding.

Jiaguwen, over 3,000 years old, is the earliest writing form of Chinese characters. Recently, it comes alive on the Chinese Internet and becomes popular as a new online language among the young people, thanks to a person who made them closer to people’s life.
Chen Nan, who creates Jiaguwen memes(表情包), is happy to know that Chinese netizens like his works. As a graduate of the Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University, Chen has been studying Chinese characters’ design (设计) for 19 years. In 2016, the ancient typeface was included into the font library (字体库) under his efforts to let the ancient words walk into people’s life. Now the library has 3,500 characters, but Chen’s research on the project still continues, as he plans to increase characters to 7,000. Mr. Guo is a teacher from Xi’an. He asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR Code (二维码). “We spent an hour or two in class leaning how to generate(使产生) the codes, and in the end everything gets easier,” said Guo. “When students finish the homework, they keep it on WeChat. Then, each student makes his own QR code and gives it to me. So I can check their work everywhere using my computer or telephone.”
The QR codes can be sent to Mr. Guo by email, QQ and WeChat. When Guo scans (扫描) his students’ QR codes, their homework appears on his phone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative, with many pictures, music and even videos.
Guo’s students like the new way and think it is interesting. “We are living in the information age. Many students like to work with computers, which makes leaning more fun.” said Tingting, a student of Guo’s.
“The paper is not easy to keep, but the code is easy to keep and share.” Guo said. “It is worth trying to use new technology in education. Education itself is a kind of creation. I don’t want my students to fall behind the times.”
However, some parents are worried. They are afraid that their children will spend too much time on computers and less time communicating with teachers. But in fact, it’s unnecessary. Students still need to look up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. They only use the code when they hand in their work, which doesn’t take them too much time.
