Bria Neff, age 12, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has been named a winner of the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. Each year, the Barron Prize celebrates 25 uplifting, socially concerned young people from across the U.S. and Canada who have made a huge positive difference to people and the environment.
Bria founded “Faces of the Endangered” to protect endangered species through the sale of her artwork. She has sold over 250 paintings of endangered animals and given away more than $34, 000 to animal conservation (保护) groups. Bria has also published two educational coloring books; income helps support the zoo’s endangered species. She uses her website and Facebook page to present the challenges facing endangered animals, inspiring followers in 48 countries.
Bria began her work as an 8-year-old, when she won an art competition hosted by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. She was shocked to learn there are over 3,000 endangered species and decided to combine her enthusiasm for painting with her love of animals to show species in danger of extinction. She carefully researches each animal before painting it. “I hope I can inspire kids like me to believe they can do great things,” says Bria.
The Barron Prize was founded in 2001 by author T.A. Barron and was named after his mother, Gloria Barron. Each year’s 25 Barron Prize young heroes show the great diversity of America. They are female and male, and from various backgrounds. Many of them have focused on helping their communities and fellow beings; many others have focused on protecting the environment. “We need our heroes today more than ever. In the near future, IOT (Internet of Things) will drive huge innovation (革新)in the way our food is grown. Plants will have a "voice", not a human voice, but a voice based on data that can tell people, computers, and machines when, for example, they are thirsty, or need more sun, medicine, etc.
Take vertical (垂直的)farms, for example. Farming is moving indoors where the growth of plants can be monitored and controlled. The facilities are built vertically, so growing areas can be put in piles. This greatly reduces the amount of land needed for farming.
From an IOT point of view, vertical farms are connected in two ways. First, small sensors (传 感器)in the soil or connected to plants tell a control system exactly how much light, water, and nutrients are needed to grow the healthiest crops. Sensors will also tell vertical fanners when crops are nearing their peak for harvesting at just the right time to make sure it's still fresh when it reaches its final destination.
Second , vertical farms will be connected to other networks and information systems, including databases that track local demand. For example local restaurants may input when they need fresh food supplies. And vertical farmers could get that information so they know which crops to grow in what quantities. This type of IOT system would have been unimaginable a generation ago.
Today, vertical farms are being experimented. Yet, the numbers point to a bright future for the industry especially as the world's population continues to grow. For example, Green Sense Farms in Chicago is able to harvest crops 26 times a year using 85 percent less energy, one-tenth the water, and no pesticides. A side benefit of lower energy use is lower C02 output of two tons per month, with the added benefit of creating 46 pounds of oxygen every day.
【1】What is the main idea of the text?
A.Voice machines help plants speak up.
B.Farmers are all turning to vertical farming.
C.IOT has brought great innovation to our future life.
D.Vertical farms driven by IOT are a future for agriculture.
【2】How do sensors attached to plants work?
A.By recording farmers harvesting crops.
B.By monitoring farmers working in their fields.
C.By analyzing information to preserve crops.
D.By passing information on to a control system.
【3】What can the IOT system help to do according to Paragraph 4?
A.Expand the output of crops. B.Match supply with demand.
C.Determine the needs of farmers. D.Move restaurants onto farms.
【4】What is the author's attitude towards the future of vertical farming?
A.Negative. B.Unconcerned.
C.Hopeful. D.Doubtful.

People speak English in different parts of the world. The same words can be used in different ways, depending on where you live. People can also have completely different ways of saying the same thing.
The Oxford English Dictionary(OED) is asking the public to help it add new words. Editors want to find the regional differences in English around the world. They want to expand its record of the language.
Last year, the OED, BBC Radio and the Forward Arts Foundation teamed up to find local words in the United Kingdom. It resulted in more than 100 regional words and phrases being added to the dictionary. One was “cuddy winter”, which means a left-handed person.
Now, the OED is widening its search to English speakers around the world. Eleanor Maier, an editor at OED, said the response has been great. Editors are listing a bunch of suggestions to include in the dictionary.
These include Hawaii's “hammajang” which means “in a disorderly state”. Another is the word for a swimming costume, " lookers" or “duckers”. It is used in Scotland.
The OED also might include the word “ frog-drowner” , which Americans might use to describe a downpour of rain. Another possibility is “brick”. It means “very cold” to people in New Jersey and New York City.
The dictionary has already found that, depending on location, a picture hanging off center might be described as “agley”. It might also be called “catawampous” or “ahoo”.
“The OED aims to cover all types of English,” Maier said. That includes scientific words, slang and regional language. Maier also said that it can be difficult for the OED's editors to identify regional words. The terms are more often spoken than written down.
The appeal is called Words Where You Are. It is looking for more suggestions. “We were surprised and pleased by the number of regional words we were able to include,” said Maier.

C.People use regional words only when they are home or with close friends.
D.Having an understanding of regional words can be helpful when communicating.
【4】Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage?
A.It's time to trace the source of local words.
B.The same English words can be used to say different things.
