Every Sunday morning I take a light jog (慢跑) around a park near my home. There’s a lake in one corner of the park. Each time I jog by this lake, I see the same elderly woman sitting by the water with a small metal cage sitting beside her.
This past Sunday my curiosity got the best of me, so I stopped jogging and walked over to her. As I got closer, I realized that the metal cage was in fact a small trap (捕捉器). There were three turtles, unharmed, slowly walking around the base of the trap. She had a fourth turtle in her lap that she was carefully cleaning with a brush.
“Hello,” I said. “I see you here every Sunday morning. If you don’t mind my noisiness, I’d love to know what you’re doing with these turtles.” She smiled. “I’m cleaning off their shells,” she replied. “Anything on a turtle’s shell, like algae (海藻), reduces (减少) the turtle’s ability to absorb (吸收) heat and weakens its ability to swim. It can also corrode (侵蚀) and weaken the shell over time.”
“Wow! That’s really nice of you!” I said.
She went on: “I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these little guys out. It’s my own strange way of making a difference.”
“But don’t most freshwater turtles live their whole lives with algae hanging from their shells?” I asked.
“Yes, sadly, they do,” she replied.
“Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent? I mean, I think your efforts (努力) are kind, but there are fresh water turtles living in lakes all around the world. And 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells. Then how exactly are your efforts here truly making a difference?”
The woman smiled aloud. She then looked down at the turtle in her lap, cleaning off the last piece of algae from its shell, and said, “Sweetie, if this little guy could talk, he’d tell you I just made all the difference in the world.”
【1】When does the author often meet the woman?
A. On Sunday morning. B. On Saturday morning.
C. On Sunday afternoon. D. On Saturday afternoon.
【2】How many turtles does the woman have?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
【3】If there is something like algae on a turtle’ shell, what will happen to the turtle?
A. It may reduce its ability to get food.
B. It may corrode the turtle’s head.
C. It may weaken its ability to swim.
D. It may be good for the turtle’breath.
【4】What’s the purpose (目的) of this passage?
A. To tell us how to help some turtles clean off their shells.
B. To tell us even little things can make a big difference.
C. To show us how to talk with a stranger.
D. To talk us into protecting the fresh water.

International Day of Happiness
You might think the International Day of Happiness is a day to practice positive (积极的) thinking or to give thanks for the things in your life that make you happy. But in fact, it’s a United Nations (UN) project which has a more serious purpose. The UN thinks happiness will only be for everyone when the people of the world are equal (平等的).
The idea goes back to 1972, when the King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, said that we should measure (测量) a country’s progress (进步) by its happiness and not just how much it produces or how much money it makes. He called it Gross (总的) National Happiness (GNH). Again, it is more than just a nice idea. And the results are compared every year to measure progress. The government (政府) uses the results and the ideas behind GNH to make plans for the country. Other places also use this kind of shorter report, such as in the cities of Victoria in Canada and Seattle in the USA, as well as the state of Vermont, USA.
In 2011, a UN adviser called Jayme Illien suggested the idea of an international day to increase (增加) happiness. His plan was accepted by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2012. Jayme was born in Calcutta, India, and he became an orphan (孤儿) when he was a child. An American nurse, Anna Belle Illien adopted him and she travelled the world to help orphans and she took Jayme with her. He saw children like him, but who were not as lucky as him because they were often escaping wars or they were very poor. He wanted to do something about it, so he worked in the areas of children’s and human rights (人权).
The UN measures and compares the happiness of different countries in the World Happiness Report. The Report includes three parts: society, economy (经济) and environment. The UN also sets goals for countries to achieve to increase happiness because it says happiness is a basic (基本的)human right. Happiness should not be something people have because they are lucky to live in a place where they have basic things like peace, education and so on. If we agree that these basic things are human rights, then it is not a very big step to agree that happiness is a basic human right, too.
【1】What does the International Day of Happiness really mean?
A. It is a day to practice positive thinking.
B. It is a day to give thanks for the things.
C. It’s actually a United Nations (UN) project.
D. It shows everyone is equal to own happiness.
【2】Who created the idea of an international day to increase happiness?
A. Jigme Singye Wangchuck. B. Jayme Illien.
C. Ban Ki-moon. D. Anna Belle Illien.
【3】What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Who created the Day of Happiness.
B. How the idea of the Day of Happiness started.
C. When the idea of the Day of Happiness began.
D. How people measured their happiness.
【4】What does the underlined word “adopted” mean?
A. took away B. found out
C. picked up D. looked after

As the internet and digital (电子的) technology become a bigger part of our lives, more of our data becomes publicly accessible (易接近的), leading to questions about privacy (隐私). So, how do we get along with the growing digital world without compromising (妥协) the security of our information and our right to privacy?
Who uses our data (数据) and why?
In the past, it was easy for people to keep track (跟踪) of their personal information. People’s information existed (存在) mostly in physical form: on paper, kept in a folder, locked in a cupboard or an office. Today, our personal information can be collected and stored online, and it’s accessible to more people than ever before. Many of us share our physical location, our travel plans, our shopping interests and our family photos online - as key services like ordering a takeaway meal, booking a plane, or buying new clothes now take place online and require us to give out our data. Every search you make, service you use, message you send and item you buy is part of your ‘digital footprint (足迹)’. Companies use this ‘footprint’ to track exactly what we are doing, from what links we click on to how much time we spend on a website. Based on your online activity, they can guess what you are interested in and what things you might want to buy. Knowing so much about you gives companies a lot of power and a lot of money. By selling your data, companies can turn your online activity into money.
Can you protect your data?
Yes ... and no!
Some of the time our personal data is shared online with our consent (同意). We post our birthday, our photographs and even our opinions online on social media. However, our data often travels further than we realize, and can be used in ways that we did not plan. Certain terrible news about data has come into our life. Many personal data has been lost, leaked (泄露) or shared without consent, have recently made people much more aware (意识到) of the possible dangers of sharing information online.
So, can we do anything to protect (保护) our data? Or should we just accept that in fact nothing is ‘free’ and sharing our data is the price we have to pay for using many online services? As people are increasingly aware of and worried about data protection, governments and organizations are taking a more active role (作用) in protecting privacy. For example, the European Union passed the General Data Protection Law, which regulates (制定法规) how personal information is collected online. However, there is still much work to be done.
As internet users, we should all have a say in how our data is used. It is important that we pay more attention to how data is acquired (获取), where it is stored and how it is used. As the ways in which we use the internet continue to grow and change, we will need to stay informed and keep demanding (要求) new laws and regulations (法规), and better information about how to protect ourselves.
【1】Which of the following is not a part of ’digital footprint’?
A. Every search you make. B. Every service you use.
C. Every message you send. D. Every item you like.
【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Your data can never be collected and stored when booking tickets online.
B. Using different phones makes it impossible for companies to track you.
C. Companies can take advantage of your digital footprint to make money.
D. American law on the protection of online data has made some changes.
【3】What is the best title of the passage?
A. Is our data safe now? B. Who needs our data?
C. How can we protect our data? D. Why do we use our data?
