I want to talk about a soldier. I saw him yesterday as my husband and I were enjoying a wonderful lunch in the cave-like dining room of an old hotel.
It is hard to imagine being comfortable in a room that probably seats a thousand, but the real magic of the place is its wonderful setting. Every comer is a wood and stone masterpiece, with high glass windows that look out to the huge cliffs of the valley.
A man entered with his family and took a seat. He wasn't in uniform, but he walked with the dignity of a soldier, and a slight limp (瘸). My suspicion was confirmed when he removed his hat and placed it on the table where I could see it. Embroidered (绣) on the cap were the words: "Iwo Jima Survivor".
As they were waiting for lunch, the others talking happily, this gentleman was stating out of the window. He was content to be left out of the conversation and allowed to take in the wonderful and impressive view of the waterfall.
I watched him, and imagined how much horror he had seen in the war. What losses did he suffer, and how many friends did he lose? What he had witnessed should have given him a good reason to lose faith in the world. Yet this tired soldier was smiling at the sky, at the sun and the roaring of the waterfall. Somehow, after everything, the world was still beautiful to him.
I walked over to him and said, "Excuse me, sir. I'm sorry to interrupt, but I saw your hat, and I just wanted to say thank you for serving."
He looked up at me, surprised, and said proudly, "You're welcome, and thank you, too."
I told him I would go home and tell my children about this experience that I'd met him.

Have you ever taken a test that you thought you could have passed easily, only to make some silly mistakes that really hurt your grade? More than a few students have done that. And some seem to do it over and over again.
There are several problem areas that can cause students to goof up or do poorly in a test that they could have passed.
Some students can become overconfident in their knowledge of the subject matter. They think they know the material better than they actually do. It is easy for students to misjudge their own knowledge, and when they realize that they don’t know the material, it is too late.
What happens more often, though, is that some students feel they are smart enough to be able to guess their way through a test. So they don’t bother studying the material. They are overconfident in their ability to figure things out.
In either case, overconfidence can result in lower grades in tests. Does this apply to you?
Another thing that can happen is that students underestimate (低估) the difficulty of the test. They expect an easy test, but the teacher throws in a real tough test that they haven’t prepared for. Sometimes the teacher may cover material in the test that students weren’t expecting. That can happen, especially if you weren’t paying attention in class.
Finally, there are students who don’t feel that getting a good grade is important to them, so they don’t bother to study or even try to do well. Such students may be trying to punish their parents, have a poor image of themselves, or are just plain foolish. Hopefully, you are not one of these students.

A.Edward, dissatisfied with his parents.
B.John, expecting an easy test for him.
C.Dobby, believing he is the smartest in the class.
D.Peter, being overconfident about his ability.
【4】What would be discussed in the paragraph that follows?
A.The causes of overconfidence.
B.The causes of a poor self-image.
C.Ways to prepare for a test.
D.Ways to avoid goofing up a test.

Did you know that Albert Einstein could not speak until he was four years old, and did not read until he was seven? His parents and teachers worried about his rnental ability.
Beethoven's music teacher said about him,“As a composer(作曲家)he is hopeless.” What if this young boy believed it?
When Thomas Edison was a young boy,his teachers said he was so stupid that he could never learn anything. He once said,‘‘I remember I used to never be able to get along at school.I was always at the foot of my class…My father thought I was stupid, and I almost decided that l was a stupid person.”What if young Thomas believed what may said about him?
When the sculptor(雕刻家)Auguste Rodin was young; he had difficulty learning to read and write.:. Today, we may say he had a learning disability. His father said of him, "I have an idiot(白痴) for a son. "His uncle agreed. "He's uneducable," he said. What if Rodin had doubted his ability?
Walt Disney was once fired by a newspaper editor because he was thought to have no "good ideas". Enrico Caruso was told by one music teacher, "you can't sing. You have no voice at all. " And an editor told Louisa May Alcott that she was unable to write anything that would have popular appeal.
What if these people had listened and become discouraged? Where would our world be without the music of Beethoven, the art of Rodin or the ideas of Albert Einstein and Walt Disney? As Oscar Levant once said, "It's not what you are but what you don't become that hurts. "
You have great potential. When you believe in all you can be, rather than all you cannot become, you will find your place on earth.

Several days ago, a 28-year-old Californian wife and mother of three children died from drinking too much water.【1】The contest was held by a local radio show and its organizers promised a free Wii video game machine to the contestant who drank the most water.
It was estimated that the woman who died drank approximately two gallons of water during the contest.【2】This information is particularly important for parents to pass on to their children. Foolish water-drinking contests are not uncommon among high school and university students, especially while playing cards.
【3】The answer to this question depends on your unique circumstances, including your diet, exercise habits, and environment. If you eat plenty of foods that are naturally rich in water, such as vegetables and fruits, you may not need to drink very much water at all. If you do not use much salt, your need for drinking water goes down even further.
Regardless of what your diet looks like, if you sweat on a regular basis because of exercise or a warm climate, you will need to supply your body with more water (through foods and/or liquids) than someone who does not sweat regularly.【4】However, some people don’t believe that it is a reliable indicator of how much water you need, as many people suffer with symptoms related to dehydration (脱水) and don’t seem to feel a need to drink water on a regular basis.
The main idea that I wish to share through this article is that it is not wise to drink several glasses of water per day without considering your diet, exercise habits, climate, and sense of thirst.【5】Remember, don’t drink too much water in a short period of time.
A. Then why do we need water in our daily life?
B. It shows us that drinking too much water can be very dangerous.
C. Then how much water should you think to best support your health?
D. Ultimately, the best guidance I can provide on this issue is to follow your sense of thirst.
E. Her body was found in her home shortly after she took part in a water-drinking contest.
F. And when you find yourself in need of water, you can get it from liquids and/or foods.
G. If you ask people if they would like a glass of water, they will almost always realize they are indeed thirsty.
