London Walks
Kensington Walk
Length: 2.5 miles
This relatively short comfortable walk starts out in Hyde Park, London’s largest Royal Park. After a visit to Kensington Palace, it’s a short walk over to the Albert Hall and the South Kensington Museums. For most people the museums here will keep you occupied for a full day, and each one of them is free. Just before you get to the Albert Hall you come to the impressive Albert Memorial. The walk finishes at Harrods, London’s most famous and Europe’s largest department store.
Crystal Palace to Forest Hill Walk
Length: 8 miles
This walk takes in five attractive parks and gardens. The most unusual sight on this walk is the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, the first ever life-size sculptures of dinosaurs and other extinct (灭绝的) creatures. They were constructed in the 1850s—before the publication of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species—and restored in 2002. The route (路线) into Forest Hill passes the Horniman Museum with its unusual collection of natural history and musical instruments; free admission.
Ealing Broadway Walk
Length: 11 miles
This is a walking tour of green spaces and interesting places to visit in West London. It starts and finishes at Ealing Broadway. The route is rich in places of interest, passing Pitshanger Manor, the Grand Union Canal, Boston Manor, Syon House, the River Thames, Richmond Old Deer Park, Kew Gardens, and Kew Bridge Steam Museum. Boston Manor tube station and Brentford main line station are close to the route.
Blackheath to Canary Wharf Walk
Length: 7.5 miles
The main attraction of this walk is the World Heritage Site at its centre, including Greenwich Park, the Old Royal Naval College and Royal Museums Greenwich (the National Maritime Museum, the Queen’s House, Royal Observatory and Cutty Sark included). Many of these attractions are free to enter and are well worth a visit, although they need plenty of time to explore in full.

For those who can stomach it, working out before breakfast may be more beneficial for health than eating first, according to a study of meal timing and physical activity.
Athletes and scientists have long known that meal timing affects performance. However, far less has been known about how meal timing and exercise might affect general health.
To find out, British scientists conducted a study. They first found 10 overweight and inactive but otherwise healthy young men, whose lifestyles are, for better and worse, representative of those of most of us. They tested the men’s fitness and resting metabolic (新陈代谢的) rates and took samples (样品) of their blood and fat tissue.
Then, on two separate morning visits to the scientists’ lab, each man walked for an hour at an average speed that, in theory should allow his body to rely mainly on fat for fuel. Before one of these workouts, the men skipped breakfast, meaning that they exercised on a completely empty stomach after a long overnight fast (禁食). On the other occasion, they ate a rich morning meal about two hours before they started walking.
Just before and an hour after each workout, the scientists took additional samples of the men’s blood and fat tissue.
Then they compared the samples. There were considerable differences. Most obviously, the men displayed lower blood sugar levels at the start of their workouts when they had skipped breakfast than when they had eaten. As a result, they burned more fat during walks on an empty stomach than when they had eaten first. On the other hand, they burned slightly more calories (卡路里), on average, during the workout after breakfast than after fasting.
But it was the effects deep within the fat cells that may have been the most significant, the researchers found. Multiple genes behaved differently, depending on whether someone had eaten or not before walking. Many of these genes produce proteins (蛋白质) that can improve blood sugar regulation and insulin (胰岛素) levels throughout the body and so are associated with improved metabolic health. These genes were much more active when the men had fasted before exercise than when they had breakfasted.
The implication of these results is that to gain the greatest health benefits from exercise, it may be wise to skip eating first.
【1】The underlined expression “stomach it” in Paragraph 1 most probably means “______”.
A.digest the meal easily B.manage without breakfast

A.Their lifestyles were typical of ordinary people.
B.Their lack of exercise led to overweight.
C.They could walk at an average speed.
D.They had slow metabolic rates.
【3】What happened to those who ate breakfast before exercise?
A.They successfully lost weight. B.They consumed a bit more calories.
C.They burned more fat on average. D.They displayed higher insulin levels.
【4】What could be learned from the research?
A.A workout after breakfast improves gene performances.
B.Too much workout often slows metabolic rates.
C.Lifestyle is not as important as morning exercise.
D.Physical exercise before breakfast is better for health.

An 18-year-old student was struggling to pay his fees. Not knowing where to get the money, he and a friend decided to host a musical concert to raise money for their education.
They went to the great pianist Paderewski. His manager demanded $2,000 for the piano recital (独奏会). A deal was made and the boys began to work to make the concert a success.
The big day arrived. But unfortunately, they hadn’t managed to sell enough tickets. The total collection was only $1,600. Disappointed, they went to Paderewski and gave him the entire $1,600, and promised to pay him the rest $400 back as soon as possible. “No,” said Paderewski. “Keep the money you need for your fees. And just give me whatever is left.” The boys were surprised, and very thankful.
Paderewski later became the Prime Minister of Poland, and he was a great leader. When the World War broke out, more than 1.5 million people went hungry, but there was no food to feed them. Paderewski turned to the US Food and Relief Administration for help.
The head there was a man called Herbert Hoover—who later became the US President. Hoover agreed to help and quickly shipped tons of food to Poland.
Paderewski decided to go across to thank Hoover himself. When Paderewski began to thank Hoover for his kindness, Hoover quickly stopped him and said, “You shouldn’t be thanking me, Mr. Prime Minister. You may not remember this, but several years ago, you helped two young students go through college. I was one of them.”

“It’s raining cats and dogs!” Although this phrase is not very common in England any more, it clearly shows how we don’t always say what we mean. One thing that is often frustrating (灰心的) for language learners is that they understand every word in a sentence and yet the meaning remains unclear—like this sentence that actually means “it’s raining very heavily!” However, it’s not just idioms that cause difficulties for people learning English.
The British are often considered to be polite but this can be very confusing for non-native speakers. We often don’t say what we are thinking—in fact we often say the opposite! Here’s an example that will hopefully explain what I mean: “You should come round for tea!”
British people are less open than people from other cultures, so we aren’t as quick to invite people into our homes. This phrase is one of those that we say but often don’t really mean, so when no further details are given, you can probably assume (认为) it was made in the name of politeness! But how does this compare to other countries?
When I lived in India, lots of people would invite me into their homes but I always assumed that they were just being polite. Of course, I was wrong. The invitations were almost always genuine, and people expected me to visit them. I was always surprised by how welcoming people were. In fact, I think I spent more time at other people’s houses than my own!
In England, we often think it’s polite to offer or suggest something even if we don’t actually want to do it, while in other cultures people are more direct. Perhaps if English people just say what they were thinking, things would be a lot easier—especially for non-native speakers!
【1】The example “It’s raining cats and dogs!” is mentioned to show that ______.
A.it is time for people protect these pet animals
B.the weather condition in England is rather awful
C.what British people say is different from what they think
D.it is difficult for non-native learner to understand idioms
【2】What do people from other cultures think of British people’s politeness?
A.Direct and honest. B.Too traditional to accept.
C.Serious and formal. D.Difficult to understand.
【3】Which of the following best explains “genuine” underlined in Paragraph 4?
A.personal. B.real. C.informal. D.special.
【4】What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To encourage people to show politeness.
B.To teach people how to avoid misunderstandings.
C.To discuss how to learn English idioms effectively.
D.To advise people to understand politeness culturally.

More than half the planet’s population now live in cities, with limited access to the natural world. For Europe and Latin America, the figure is more than 70%. 【1】
Gardening in particular is an opportunity for everyone to have such kind of experience, even if they live in built-up areas. It is typically seen as moderate (适度的) intensity exercise equal to playing doubles tennis or walking at a speed of 3.5mph, so it has similar fitness benefits.
【2】Home and gardens have long been important for family food production, but gardening can also encourage people to eat more healthily and act as an educational resource on nutritious food. In fact, children who take part in gardening and grow their own food have a greater preference for, and increased consumption of, fruit and vegetables.
【3】Research has shown that gardeners generally have greater life satisfaction, raised self-esteem and fewer feelings of depression and anger than non-gardeners.
This last point suggests that the mental benefits of gardening may be more than just a side-effect of the physical exercise involved, 【4】People with strong social networks have an increased life expectancy, less stress and fewer visits to the doctor. In addition, spending time outdoors in a natural environment helps us to feel less stressed, reduce the symptoms of depression, and improve our concentration and attention.
All this evidence shows there’s a strong relationship between gardening and health, but we only know for sure that there is connection, not "cause and effect". 【5】We also need to directly examine the immediate effects of gardening on people who have never previously taken part or are suffering from mental and physical ill health.
A. Gardening is also linked to better diets.
B. But more than this, it can promote people’s mental health.
C. One possible reason is that gardening can involve social interaction.
D. A good eating is supposed to include a balance of several food groups.
E. Yet contact with nature has varieties of benefits for both physical and mental health.
F. This means gardening alone is not necessarily a direct cause of any improvements in health.
G. Remaining socially active can also inspire seniors to build confidence and live a healthy life.
