Though not as mainstream as devices like smartphones and fitness trackers, more companies are now experimenting with the concept of connected garments. Among the pioneers is London-based CuteCircuit, which has been creating fashionable smart clothing since 2004. The company’s latest creation is the “Sound Shirt,” which allows deaf people to “feel” live music by transforming the tunes into touch feelings in real time.
The fashionable jacket achieves the incredible function using software that changes the music into data and wirelessly sends it to the 16-micro actuators(促动器)placed inside the cloth. The devices vibrate(振动)in sync(同步)to the intensity(强度)of the music being played, allowing the wearer to feel each instrument individually. For example, violin can be felt on the arms, while the deeper, heavier bass notes can be felt close to the stomach. The series of touch-like feelings across the wearer’s body enables them to feel the entire composition, resulting in a fully amazing musical experience.
To ensure the shirt is comfortable, the designers chose to leave out wires and instead wove conductive(可传导的)material into the garment’s cloth. Francesca Rosella, co-founder and chief creative officer of CuteCircuit, explains, “There are no wires inside, so we’re only using smart material—we have a combination of microelectronics and very thin, flexible and conductive material. All these little electronic motors are connected with these conductive material so that the garment is soft and stretchable.”
CuteCircuit, which has been testing the Sound Shirt for three years, expects to make it available to the general public shortly. Priced at $3,673, the smart jacket will not be cheap. However, twin sisters Hermon and Heroda Berhane, who lost their hearing at a young age, believe the hi-tech garment is a worthwhile investment, especially for deaf people with a passion for dancing. “It’s almost like feeling the depth of the music,” says Hermon. “It just feels as though we can move along with it.” Heroda agrees, adding, “I think it could definitely change our lives.”
【1】What is the function of the actuators in the clothing?
A.Turning music into data.
B.Causing touch-like feelings.
C.Conducting electricity in the clothing.
D.Wirelessly sending data to the clothing.
【2】Why does the author mention Francesca Rosella’s words about the clothing?
A.To explain how the clothing functions.
B.To explain the principles of smart material.
C.To show the clothing is comfortable to wear.
D.To show the designers have worked very hard.
【3】What do Hermon and Heroda Berhane think of the new creation?
A.It actually isn’t that advanced.
B.It is affordable to most people.
C.It is really worth having for the deaf.
D.It can arouse deaf people’s passion for dancing.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.Deaf people will be able to dance soon.
B.Deaf people are looking forward to a hi-tech garment.
C.CuteCircuit’s new garment draws deaf people’s attention.
D.CuteCircuit’s sound shirt allows deaf people to feel music.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) advice is as influential as human’s, but positive crowd views still overpower.
In a study, researchers found that machines that make recommendations—or AI experts—were as influential as human experts when the AI experts recommended which photo users should add to their online business profiles. However, both AI and human experts failed to budge them if their feedback was negative and went against popular views among other users, said S. Shyam Sundar, a professor of Media Effects.
Because people are increasingly using social media to look for feedback, studies suggest that expert opinions and the bandwagon(从众效应)effect may be important factors in influencing decisions, according to Jinping Wang, a doctoral candidate in mass communication and first author of the study. “Nowadays, we often turn to online platforms for opinions from other people—like our peers and experts—before making a decision,” said Wang. AI experts are often less expensive than human experts and they can also work 24 hours a day, which, Wang suggests, might make them appealing to online business.
The researchers also found that the AI’s group status—in this case, national origin was pointed out—did not seem to affect a person’s acceptance of its recommendation. Among human experts, however, an expert from a similar national origin who offered a negative opinion of a photograph tended to be more influential than a human expert from an unknown country who offered a similar negative rating of a photograph.
While findings that suggest group status may not affect whether a person values the view of AI experts sound like good news, Sundar suggests that the same cultural prejudice might still be at work in AI experts for they could be hidden in the programming and training data.
“It can be both good—and bad—because it all depends on what you feed the AI,” said Sundar. “While it is good to believe in AI’s ability to transcend(超越)cultural prejudice, we have to keep in mind that if you train the AI on pictures from one culture, they could give misleading recommendations on pictures meant for use in other cultural contexts.”
【1】What do the underlined words “budge them” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Change users’ ideas. B.Satisfy users’ needs.
C.Raise users’ spirits. D.Fire users’ imagination.
【2】Why do users often turn to AI experts?
A.Because AI experts are more knowledgeable.
B.Because AI experts are less influenced by feelings.
C.Because AI experts are always available and cost less.
D.Because AI experts are so new as to be more attractive.
【3】Which expert’s negative assessments is a person more likely to believe?
A.An expert who has great achievements in arts.
B.An expert from countries with similar cultures.
C.An expert with better personality and attitude.
D.A foreign expert who is very popular worldwide.
【4】What did Sundar mean by the last paragraph?
A.People should have a mind of their own.
B.People should be able to tell good from bad.
C.People should be trained how to use AI properly.
D.People should know AI’s hidden cultural prejudice.

The lights go down, music plays, and a young woman on a bike at the front of the class encourages students to spin faster and harder. When the lights go back on, the students on the bikes pull out their notebooks, and it’s clear that this is not SoulCycle. Instead, it’s a first-of-its-kind business school course at Fordham University that is taught on spin bikes in a university.
“It’s the first class that I mention to anybody when anybody asks me what classes I’m taking,” said Amanda Vopat, 22, a business administration major. “I think people are really excited about it.”
The 75-minute, twice-weekly course is the brainchild of Julita Haber, a business school professor at Fordham. “I have been introducing movement and fitness in my classes for the past seven years,” she said. “I found the spin class would really allow students to exercise while a professor lectures at the same time.”
The course the students are taking while cycling is no joke. Managing Professional Relationships is an upper-level business school course taken primarily by juniors and seniors. The students are fully instrumental in each class, selecting the music, leading stretches before and after class and leading the intervals during the class.
Haber stops her lecture every 20 minutes throughout the class. While one student turns off the lights, another student turns up the music and a third student goes to a bike in the front of the class to lead their classmates in high-intensity interval that lasts two to three minutes, just enough to re-energize the students.
“It’s a fantastic way of engaging students and as a professor, as a teacher, that’s really gratifying,” she said. “They don’t have their smartphones, and they don’t have laptops so they are physically engaged and also mentally engaged in what is being said.”
The course is the first of its kind at Fordham, and Haber believes it is also a first across the United States. She has authored research on the unique classroom approach, which she calls fitness integrated learning.
Donna Rapaccioli, the head of Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business, described how students were “energized” by the class and said Fordham was open to expanding it to other courses. “Definitely,” Rapaccioli answered when asked if Haber’s course represents the future of learning.
【1】What might SoulCycle be?
A.A repair shop. B.A healthy club. C.A bicycle store. D.A music studio.
【2】What do we know about the business school course?
A.It was originally thought up by Julita.
B.It lasts seventy-five minutes without breaks.
C.It is open to all students at Fordham University.
D.It was taught in a university gym once every 2 weeks.
【3】What does the underlined word “gratifying” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?
A.Inspiring. B.Interesting. C.Surprising. D.Satisfying.
【4】How did Donna Rapaccioli sound?
A.Proud and confident. B.Hopeful and cheerful.
C.Informal and friendly. D.Humorous and clever.

Why is it that we always seem to pick the slowest line in a supermarket or store? Basically, the reason is simple: the chances are against us. To explain, imagine that you are in a store where there are three lines. 【1】 If there are more lines, your chances of getting into the speediest queue are even less.
Interestingly, some people have come up with theories and formulas to calculate this kind of thing. 【2】 A pioneering queuing theorist was an engineer named Erlang. He wanted to figure out the best number of telephone operators to have at the telephone exchange in the early 1900s. Taking into consideration the average number of phone calls in an hour and the average call length, Erlang came up with formulas to determine the best number of operators that should be on duty at any given time. 【3】 On top of that, his work established the basis for queuing theory, which became a new branch of mathematics.
The theories first invented by Erlang are still used today in a variety of commercial settings, including call centers and traffic engineering. 【4】 While there are many options available regarding lining up, it appears that a snaking-line approach—where people stand in a single line and wait for the next available clerk—is the most efficient. 【5】 Research shows that this option is about three times faster than using separate lines, which is the approach that is most commonly used but not that efficient for anyone in a rush.
A.This is the method that most banks use.
B.People who do this type of research are generally known as queuing theorists.
C.His formula was soon accepted by telephone companies, including the British Post.
D.You only have a one-in-three chance of picking the quickest line, so most likely you’ll be wrong.
E.The research he conducted even helps modern businesses provide satisfactory services to the public.
F.Businesses know just the tricks for distracting their customers from the long lines they’re waiting in.
G.Grocery stores try to have enough employees at checkout lines to get all customers through without delay.

Having held the interschool storytelling championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited. I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.
Paragraph 1:
Soon, it was my turn to talk.

Paragraph 2:
Finally, results were announced after the contest.
