I.M. Pei, the Chinese-American, who was regarded as one of the last great modernist architects, has died at the age of 102.
Although he worked mostly in the United States, Pei will always be remembered for a European project: His redevelopment of the Louvre Museum in Paris in the 1980s. He gave us the glass and metal pyramid in the main courtyard, along with three smaller pyramids and a vast subterranean (地下的) addition to the museum entrance.
Pei was the first foreign architect to work on the Louvre in its long history, and initially his designs were fiercely opposed. But in the end, the French — and everyone else — were won over. Winning the fifth Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983, he was thought as giving the 20th century “some of its most beautiful inside spaces and outside forms … His talent and skill in the use of materials approach the level of poetry.”
After studying architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard, Pei set up his own architectural practice in New York in 1955.
Designing the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum in 1964 established him as a name. His East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1978 changed people’s ideas of a museum. The site was an odd trapezoid (梯形) shape. Pei’s solution was to cut it in two. The resulting building was dramatic, light and elegant — one of the first crowd-pleasing cathedrals of modern art.
Though known as a modernist, and notable for his forms based on arrangements of simple geometric ( 几何的) shapes, he once urged Chinese architects to look more to their architectural tradition rather than designing in a western style.
In person, I.M. Pei was good-humored, charming and unusually modest. His working process was evolutionary, but innovation (创新) was never an intended goal.
“Stylistic originality is not my purpose,” he said. “I want to find the originality in the time, the place and the problem.”

Science fiction is probably the only type in which anything can happen. From cities in space to robots taking over the earth, the future is never a dull place in sci-fi novels or movies. However, the task of this popular type is not only to predict the future, but also to reflect real life.
Just take a look at The Stone Sky, written by US author N. K. Jemisin, which won the Nebula Award for Best Novel of 2017. One of the reasons why the book was recognized was that it matches up with reality and shows modern social mentality. The Stone Sky tells a story happening on a broken earth, which often suffers natural disasters. In the novel, the earth “is not simply damaged, it is broken: its current condition was actively inflicted (强加) upon through the foolishness of humankind”, sci-fi blog Skulls in the Stars noted.
Faced with the earth’s constant changes, the characters in the book react in many different ways. Essun and her daughter Nassun both try to save the planet. Essun wants to repair the broken world, but Nassun desires to wreck it and create a new one. This difference casts light on the cultural anxieties in the real world, in which rebellious (叛逆的) young people want to break rules and traditions, while the elders try to keep them, the New York Times commented.
Generational idea aside, the book also includes real-life race issues and even adds some sarcasm (讽刺) to them. In the story, the dark-skinned people from the hot regions of the earth are regarded as the advanced race, while the paler people from the Antarctic are viewed as inferior (较差的). Yet the unconditional love between Essun and Nassun brings warmth to readers’ hearts. As Jemisin notes at the end of The Stone Sky, “Where there is pain in this book, it is real pain; where there is anger, it is real anger; where there is love, it is real love.”
【1】Why is science fiction special according to the first paragraph?
A.It reflects our real life.
B.It excites people easily.
C.Anything can happen in it.
D.People often suffer a lot in it.
【2】The underlined word “wreck” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ___”.
A.abandon B.ruin C.change D.improve
【3】How do the characters in The Stone Sky react to the constant changes of the earth?
A.The younger wants to build a completely new world.
B.Most of them would like to get along well with nature.
C.The older waits hopefully for the earth to improve itself.
D.Few of them think it possible to save the earth from its fate.
【4】What makes The Stone Sky stand out from other sci-fi novels?
A.Its prediction of the future world.
B.Its description of unconditional love.
C.Its reflection of reality and social problems.
D.Its explanation of the foolishness of humankind.

In today’s competitive student world, the ability to work harmoniously with other people is a good way of marking yourself off from everybody else. While teamwork may offer the chance to blame others for your mistakes, you can never blame them for your failings as a teammate. In any case, working out where to apportion blame is not a good way to approach membership of any new team. Instead, get to know one another, so you can build up a shared identity and combine your strengths. Find out each other’s values, weaknesses, and past achievements.
Don’t shy away from conflicts but work out how to deal with them. Humour can be a good glue, so have a laugh together.
Before settling down to business, it’s important to establish ground rules. First, make sure you all share the same concept of time. Then, work out how you are going to make and communicate decisions. These are probably best made at a formal meeting and communicated by email. You must also agree on who will be responsible for making decisions.
Even if you have decided that decisions don’t have to be unanimous (一致的), it is important that every team member is kept involved, including those who always disagree with the majority view, rarely say a word, or have a strange haircut.
Once you’ve got your rules of engagement, define what you want to achieve, and set the deadline. Work out what you have to do before the time is up to do it. The team must assign (分配) roles according to everyone’s individual skills. Remember that every task is equally important.
Whatever your role, it is important to keep a record of what has been decided at each stage and what each member of the team has contributed. Then, when the task is over, you can review how well it went.
【1】At the beginning of the passage, the author stresses ________.
A.the importance of being on time B.the importance of cooperation

A.shoulder the responsibility B.find out the causes of mistakes
C.get all the blame for mistakes D.say who should be blamed

A.Try your best not to make mistakes.
B.It is better to make decisions at an informal meeting.
C.Those who seldom express their opinions can be ignored.
D.Roles should be assigned according to everyone’s individual skills.
【4】The passage is mainly about ________.
A.the art of doing well in exams B.the art of dealing with conflicts
C.the art of making decisions D.the art of working in a team

Ways to improve your mental health in 2020
