My mother always said, “You young men should explore your own country before stepping out into the world.” It seemed like a tough task. But luckily for me, Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July in 2017.I jumped at the opportunity and secured an inexpensive ticket.
Excitement was at its peak as I approached the train station on the morning when my 22-day adventure was to begin. I jumped on board the passenger vessel (车厢)like it was the train to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. The train headed west in search of our first destination — the scenic town of Banff, Alberta. After just an hour on the train, desperation already came on me. The thought of three full days on those tracks broke my spirits. As I gazed out towards Lake Superior’s glistening (闪闪发亮)waves, I decided if I was to be stuck in here, I would need to enjoy my time.
Those three days turned into a summer camp on rails. Real friendships with the crew were born within that train. Stops were made in small, remote railroad villages. A large group of strangers turned travelling companions would rush towards the villages to reward our endless patience with local cuisine. At night, we would walk to the glass-domed (玻璃穹顶)train car, which gave a scenic view of the night sky, untouched by light pollution.
After three days, we arrived in Banff. Before my adventure of taking the train across Canada, if I could have skipped the travel and arrived at the destination, I would have. But that is no longer true. I’ve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination.

A tall, artistic structure called Vessel stands at the heart of Hudson Yards, a real-estate (房地产) development in New York City that includes offices, residences (住房) and stores. Hudson Yards is currently the largest private development in the U.S. and is built over the top of an active rail yard.
Vessel is a network of staircases and platforms that offers views of New York City from a variety of perspectives. The structure is meant to be a meeting point at the center of the area as well as an attraction for tourists. It won’t be called Vessel for long, however. There will soon be a competition to choose a permanent title.
The structure is currently called “Vessel” because of its shape: narrow at its base and then expanding up and out. To get to the structure’s highest point on foot, visitors must climb 2,500 steps and cross 80 platforms. According to the developer, it’s a one-mile climb.
To explore Vessel, visitors need free tickets that allow them to enter the structure at a set time of the day. The purpose of the set times on the tickets is to keep the number of people on Vessel within a safe limit at all times.
Since Vessel opened to the public, it has been applauded by some visitors and criticized by others. Some have made fun of its shape, comparing it to a pineapple or waste paper basket. Others have criticized its lack of benches. Since resting on the stairs is not allowed, there is no place to sit. Despite these issues, Vessel attracts many locals and tourists every day.
【1】What information about Vessel does this article provide?
A.Its estimated weight.
B.Its grand opening date.
C.The attractive lighting.
D.The distance to the top.
【2】What is true about the structure’s current official name?
A.It’s universally praised.
B.It’s only temporary.
C.It’s been copied elsewhere.
D.Its meaning is unknown.
【3】According to the article, why are tickets only available for set times?
A.To encourage people to stay on Vessel longer.
B.To increase the amount of income earned by Vessel.
C.To prevent Vessel from becoming too crowded.
D.To keep littering on Vessel to the absolute minimum.
【4】What does the article imply about people who visit Vessel?
A.Their opinions about it vary quite a bit.
B.Their primary interest lies in shopping.
C.They return to it on multiple occasions.
D.Some are asked to pay a small entrance fee.

"When I was 16 years old, I was diving in Greece, but I was disappointed because I saw more plastic bags than fish.” These are the words of Boyan Slat, an engineer who designed the world's first ocean plastic cleanup system.

Every year, more than 8 million tons of plastics end up in our oceans, according to the UN Environment Programme. It is predicted that the weight of ocean plastics will match the weight of all the fish in our oceans by 2050. To prevent this from happening, in 2013 Slat created the Ocean Cleanup, an environmental non¬governmental organization, and put his plan for an ocean cleanup device into action.
After years of research and develop¬ment in the Netherlands, a device called System 001/B successfully started gathering plastics on October 2, 2019. The device uses a 600-meter-long C-shaped tube to gather all the floating rubbish. Unlike other cleanup methods, the system floats freely according to the direction of the waves, which allows waste to flow into and stay within the device. A sea anchor is attached to either end. This slows down the system as it floats through the water and allows the faster-moving rubbish, carried by the waves, to flow into its mouth. System 001/B can also collect waste below the surface using a 3-meter-deep skirt(挡板)attached to the end. After being gathered, the trash will be dragged back to shore by boat and recycled.
Right now, the system operates in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area that is 3 times the size of France. Once operational, the Ocean Cleanup expects a full fleet to be able to clear 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 5 years.
"It remains to be seen whether this dream will become a reality, but it is undeniable that humanity must work together to reduce our plastic use and repair the damage our waste has caused," Slat said. "We are starting to see a young generation that gets it and is excited about a sustainable (可持续的)future, but the question still comes down to: Are we going fast enough, and how much damage will have been done before we get there?"
【1】The underlined word “match” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________”.
A.compare B.equal
C.measure D.cover
【2】Why did Boyan Slat create the Ocean Cleanup?
A.To collect ocean plastic waste.
B.To help to invent System 001/B.
C.To protect the living environment of fish.
D.To do research on the ocean environment.
【3】What can we know about System 001/B?
A.It can collect and recycle garbage at the same time.
B.It can only gather ocean waste which floats on the water.
C.It aims to clear up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years.
D.It is an ocean-cleaning device which has already been put to use.
【4】What does Slat want to tell us according to the last paragraph?
A.Young generations care less about the environment.
B.The future ecology of the oceans is deeply worrying.
C.People should work hard to decrease plastic pollution.
D.It's quite difficult to repair the damage to the environment.

As you might expect in a language learning company, almost everyone who works at Babbel is multilingual (会讲多种语言的). The central principle of the Babbel language learning approach is that people should spend about 15 minutes per day studying a new language. This is surprisingly short compared to the length of time that university students are expected to use to study a language nightly (about 90 minutes) . 【1】I sat down with Babbel's language expert, Karohine Schnur, to find out how 15-minute language lessons are all you need to become fluent in a new language.
Karoline started off by explaining the central principle behind the Babbel learning approach. "If you read a lot of information, you won't be able to absorb everything, "she said. 【2】 The background information is thrown away, and never goes into our long-term memory. But it s not so great for language learning. “ 【3】Repetition is really important in language learning,” Karoline added.
Because repetition is so important, the Babbel app (应用程序)is quite useful in learning a new language. It has a Review Manager that's designed entirely for repeating information and getting it into your long-term memory. When talking about the rationality (合理性)behind this approach, Karoline explained, "It's based on time intervals. 【4】 ”When using the app, you' ll notice that items come up for review not only right after a lesson is completed, but in the days and weeks that follow. She continued, "If you keep getting it correct, the time until you see it again expands. After all those steps are done,we say, ‘【5】 ' " In this way, Babbel isn't just helping you memorize vocabulary, but truly learn a language.
A.OK, this is in your long-term memory.
B.How much do you remember after a week?
C.It's designed with the limitations of human memory in mind.
D.So how are people at Babbel picking up new languages in so less time?
E.Each time you repeat something and get it correct, it will move up a step.
F.To get something into long-term memory, you must make connections and repeat it.
G.The brain is a master at deciding what information is important and what is background noise.
