In the ongoing battle between Tiger Moms, French Mamas, and everyone else who wants to know what is the best way to raise their kids, a new study adds evidence that the extreme Tiger-style may do more harm than good. Authoritarian parents are more likely to end up with disrespectful children with violent behaviors, the study found, compared to parents who listen to their kids with the goal of gaining trust.
It was the first study to look at how parenting styles affect the way teens view their parents and, in turn, how they behave. The study considered three general styles of parenting. Authoritative parents are demanding and controlling while also being warm and sensitive to their children’s needs. Authoritarian parents, on the contrary, are demanding and controlling without the appearance of caring, attachment and receptiveness. They take a “my way or the highway” approach to their kids. Permissive parents, the third group, have warm and receptive qualities, but they set few boundaries and carry out few rules.
Using data on early 600 kids from an ongoing study of middle school and high school students in New Hampshire, researchers from the University of New Hampshire were able to find “my way or the highway” parenting with more violent behaviors like robbery, drug-taking, and attacking someone else with the intention of hurting or killing. Firm but loving parenting, on the other hand, led to fewer lawbreakers. Permissive parenting, surprisingly, didn’t seem to make much of a difference either.
To explain the rink between parenting style and behavior in kids, the researchers suggested that what matters most is how reasonable kids think their parents’ power is. This sense comes when kids trust that their parents are making the best decisions for them and believe that they need to do what their parents say even if they don’t always like how their parents are treating them. When kids respect the power of their parents, the researchers reported in the journal ofAdolescence, their behavior is better. Previous research has also linked firm but caring parenting with kids who have more self-control and independence.
“When children consider their parents to be the reliable figure, they trust the parents and feel that they have a duty to do what their parents tell them to do,” said lead researcher Pick Trinkner. “This is very important as the parent doesn’t have to rely on a system of rewards and punishments to control behavior and the child is more likely to follow the rules when the parent is not physically present.”
【1】What is special about the study?
A.It considered three general styles of parenting.
B.It used data on 600 kids.
C.No such study has ever been conducted before.
D.It showed the advantage of parenting.
【2】According to the research, what kind of parenting style is likely to cultivate well-behaved children?
A.My way or the highway parenting
B.Permissive parenting
C.Authoritarian parenting
D.Authoritative parenting
【3】How did the author develop paragraph 3?
A.By proposing a definition.
B.By providing data.
C.By making a comparison.
D.By drawing a conclusion.
【4】What is the purpose of writing this passage?
A.To introduce three types of parenting.
B.To advise parents to listen to their children totally.
C.To advise parents to demand and control the behaviors of their children.

Malaria(疟疾) is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite (寄生虫). People with malaria often experience fever, and flu-like illness. Left untreated, they may die. A new study suggests that some homemade soups might help fight malaria.
Jake Baum of Imperial College London led the research. He asked children at a London school to bring in home-made clear soups that their families would make to treat a fever. The children were from many different cultural backgrounds. And the soups were then given to the parasite that created 99.7 percent of malaria cases in Africa.
Of the 56 soups tested, five were more than 50 percent effective in containing the growth of the parasite. Two were as effective as one drug now used to treat malaria. And four soups were more than 50 percent effective in preventing parasites from aging to the point when they could infect (感染) mosquitoes that spread the disease. The soups came from families from different places, including Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. They had several main ingredients (成分), including chicken, beef and green vegetables. Baum said the vegetarian soups showed similar results to the soups with meat.
Baum and his team reported their results recently in the publication Archives of Disease in Childhood. “When we started getting soups that worked - in the lab under very limited conditions - we were really happy and excited,” Baum said. Baum also added that it was unclear which foods made the soups effective against malaria. “If we were serious about going back and finding the ingredients, like good scientists, we’d have to do it in a better way,” he said.
Baum said his aim was in part to show children that scientific research can turn a herbal (草本的) cure into a man-made medicine. Now the drugs that treat the disease are becoming useless for more and more people, and about 400,000 people are killed by the disease every year. That means scientists will have to find new drugs.
【1】What can we learn about malaria from the passage?
A.It can be easily recognized.
B.It can be a very serious disease.
C.It doesn’t always require treatment.
D.It is a big problem in many countries.
【2】Why did Jake Baum ask children to bring in such home-made soups?
A.To figure out their ingredients.
B.To learn about different cultures.
C.To see if they could help cure fevers.
D.To see if they could help fight malaria.
【3】What does the underlined word “containing” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Improving. B.Proving. C.Preventing. D.Showing.
【4】What is a problem with the drugs used to fight malaria now?
A.They can be harmful to people’s health.
B.They have no effect on many people.
C.They just work in certain countries.
D.They are very difficult to get.

If you walk along the Victorian promenade in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, you’ll notice one bench that sticks out from the rest. Sitting 100 metres from the pier head is a bright yellow sign marking, “The ‘Happy to Chat’ bench: sit here if you don’t mind someone stopping to say hello.”
It was introduced by the police earlier this year to deal with loneliness among the elderly in the seaside town, where pensioners make up a third of the population. The scheme was picked up by CNN, and has attracted followers around the country, as well as in other countries as far away as Canada, Australia, United States and Ukraine.
More than nine million people in the UK say they “often or always” feel lonely, according to the British Red Cross. And the former health secretary Jeremy Hunt described loneliness among the elderly as “our national shame”. With the problem so serious, can something as simple as a bench be effective to solve the problem?
That question led me to Burnham’s promenade on a windy November morning, where I spent hours sitting on the country’s first “chat bench” to see who, if anyone, would strike up a conversation.
After lunch, I got chatting to 67-year-old Ann Davies, who retired a few years ago from her job as the manager of the Sue Ryder charity shop. She has lived alone since her divorce 13 years ago, and spent much of her time volunteering. Otherwise, she explained, she would be at the serious risk of falling into the UK’s large group of older people who “often feel ignored or invisible”.
“Once you get behind that door, you don’t want to come out. And the longer it goes on, the more you don’t want to,” Ann said. “You almost get agoraphobic, and the outside seems very alien and scary. But it’s not. The best thing is to volunteer. You’ve got to have a reason to go out.”
Full of natural wit, it was very easy to warm to Ann after just a few minutes. She explained why she took regular advantage of Burnham’s chat bench, “Even just somebody looking at it is enough — some may say, ‘Oh, this is a good idea. What’s all that about then?’ You start chatting about the bench, and it goes on from there. ‘Are you on holiday? Do you come down every year?’ It’s just natural. Sometimes they’re not even sitting on the bench; they just talk to you standing there.”
As the afternoon wore on and the gloomy sky dimmed further, I called it a day and travelled back to London with my spirits high. Perhaps there is hope for neighborliness after all.
【1】What is the bench mentioned in the passage used to do?
A.To let the walkers have a good rest. B.To make the environment more beautiful.
C.To provide a special place for people to chat. D.To spread pensions from one person to another.
【2】What does Jeremy Hunt think of the problem “the elderly’s loneliness” in the UK?
A.It is a serious problem needing attention. B.It can be a great burden to the country.
C.It does great harm to old people’s health. D.It needs to be solved by British Red Cross.
【3】How does Ann Davies fight against loneliness?
A.By cleaning the “Happy to Chat” bench frequently.
B.By talking with other old people whenever possible.
C.By spending time offering a helping hand to others.
D.By calling on the public to pay attention to old people.
【4】What is Ann’s attitude towards the bench?
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Disapproving. D.Concerned.
