If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important things to remember about reading rate:
● Knowing why you are reading or what you are reading to find out will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.
● Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, arithmetic problems, science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea.
● Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories meant for enjoyment, news letters from friends, pieces of news from local, or home-town, papers, telling what is happening to friends and neighbors.
● In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You will need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

Our family is very familiar with wild animals. We lived in the mountains. There were a number of things we were taught as children that most “city folk’ don’t understand. Here are a few stories between us and wild animals.
I think I was 15 when this happened. It was 5:30am on a cold winter morning . It had just started to snow heavily, and I went out to feed the chickens in my back yard . I don’t know why the door of the yard was open that night. At daybreak, my father came in and asked me if I had seen anything unusual. I replied that I hadn’t . He took me out and showed me bear tracks right next to mine .Obviously, the bear had been frightened of me and left. I wasn’t brave , it was good luck for me.
A few years ago, my husband, father and I went up to Mountain Baldy . At the top, many people were enjoying picnics. Some deer came wandering out , and some people fed them. Some even tried to pet them .We also gave them some food. When they went into the woods, some people followed them.
Our next door neighbor even fed a wolf. She offered her dog food and put out table scraps.(剩食物). The animal came on time for the foods. No matter how we tried to get her to stop , she couldn’t. Wildlife is just wild. Feeding it doesn’t really help it. Feeding it isn’t safe for you ; you could be attacked especially by the fierce wild animals.
【1】Why did the author say he was lucky that early morning?
A.After he left the bear went to the back yard.
B.The bear couldn’t get close to him as the yard door closed.
C.The bear has left long before he went to the back yard.
D.The bear feared him and left before he knew.
【2】Why were many people at the top of Mount Baldy?
A.To play games.
B.To feed deer.
C.To have a picnic.
D.To watch the deer.
【3】The author writes this passage only to tell us _________.
A.it is not safe for people to feed wild animals.
B.some stories between people and wild animals.
C.we should do something to protect wild animals.
D.people are sometimes unsafe in the mountainous area.

For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?
Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.
In this article, I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.
【1】Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict?
A.Both are about where to draw the line.
B.Both can continue for generations.
C.Neither has any clear winner.
D.Neither can be put to an end.
【2】What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.
B.The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.
C.The teens cause their parents of misleading them.
D.The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.
【3】Parents and teens want to be right because they want to ______.
A.give orders to the other
B.know more than the other
C.gain respect from the other
D.get the other to behave properly
【4】What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A.Solutions for the parent-teen problems.
B.Examples of the parent-teen war.
C.Causes for the parent-teen conflicts.
D.Future of the parent-teen relationship.

Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have undergone an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power.
One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.
Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make startling changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. The complete mobilization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.
【1】Which sentence carried the main idea of the whole passage?
A.The first sentence of the first paragraph.
B.The first sentence of the second paragraph.
C.The first sentence of the third paragraph.
D.The last sentence of the second paragraph.
【2】Which of the following statements is true?
A.Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.
B.Both computers and robots have been in use on today’s farms.
C.Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present.
D.Students at agricultural colleges must take computer classes because they can do nothing without the help of computers on today’s farms.
【3】According to the engineers, _______will be done by robots in the near future.
A.all farm work B.little work
C.some work D.most work
【4】What is the best title for the whole passage?
A.Computer, Farmers’ Best Friend B.Farmers in The Future
C.Computers and Robots D.The Agricultural Revolution
