After braving wind, snow, and dizzying heights in the mountains, a dog named Mera may have broken a world record without even knowing it. She began following a group of climbers who were getting ready to climb up to the top of Mount Baruntse in Nepal—it stands just south of Mount Qomolangma at 23,389 feet tall. Mera was easily frightened when the climbers first met her down in the village of Khare, so they were shocked when she suddenly bounded up next to them while they were coming down another mountain at 17,000 feet.
Mera had passed dozens of other climbers that she could have pleased, and focused her eyes on the leader of this month—long expedition, Seattle—based Don Wargowsky. In no time they were like peas and carrots. Don happily shared his sleeping bag, tent, and meals with his new companion while the crew was hiking to the Mount Baruntse Base Camp over the next two weeks.
When it finally came time to depart from the base camp and begin their climb up the mountain, Don knew the walk was not easy for a dog, so he tied her up near the camp.“She kept barking as we walked away,” said Don. “Half an hour into our climb I felt a tickle(发痒)on the back of my knee. I looked down and saw Mera following right behind me just like before.”
After reaching the last mountain camp before the summit, the climbing crew left Mera sleeping in Don’s tent with the hope that she would not try to follow them up the steep climb. Don was then surprised when he later turned around at 22,000 feet in order to take a photo only to see Mera climbing towards them slowly. Finally, after a long climb, they reached the summit and took photos celebrating the first dog to top Mount Baruntse.

Lawmakers in Massachusetts have introduced a law that would ban children in the seventh grade or younger from playing tackle football(冲撞式橄榄球).The Act for No Organized Head Impacts to Schoolchildren, or the NO HITS Act, was introduced last month in an effort to protect children’s heads from blows while at a particularly fragile age.
The bill, which would still allow flag or touch football to be played, would cause fines of up to $2,000 for each time the law is broken. People who frequently break the law, or those whose actions cause physical harm, would face bigger fines.
“It’s all about kids’ health and we have a number of studies that say that repeated contacts(接触) to the head are very bad for you and the younger that starts, the worse it is," said Rep. Paul A. Schmid III (D),who introduced the bill with House Minority Leader Bradley Jones (R).
According to a 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers examining 111 brains belonging to former NFL (National Football League) players found the brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, in 110 of them. The disease is associated with repeated head injuries, not just concussions(脑震荡),and is generally found in athletes, retired soldiers and others with a history of repetitive brain injuries, according to the Concussion Legacy Foundation, a non—profit organization that works to study, treat and prevent future cases of brain injuries among athletes and other at—risk groups.
Similar laws have been considered elsewhere in the country, including California and Illinois last year, though they didn’t secure enough votes to become law. Those against previously proposed(提议的)bans have argued that adequate progress has been achieved to make the sport safer and that the sport offers too many benefits for children to totally avoid it.
Several former NFL players, who have been directly or indirectly affected by CTE, have argued differently, however. “I made the mistake of starting tackle football at 9 years old. Now, CTE has taken my life away.Y outh tackle football is all risk with no reward," Pro Football Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti told CNN last year.
【1】Why was the law introduced by lawmakers in Massachusetts?
A.To make tackle football safer for players.
B.To ban children from doing sports too young.
C.To encourage the popularity of some safe sports.
D.To keep young children from suffering brain injuries.
【2】What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The reason why the sport is forbidden.
B.The consequences of breaking the new law.
C.The causes of the new law in Massachusetts.
D.The fines of playing tackle football incorrectly.
【3】What does the author want to show by mentioning the 2017 study?
A.Future cases of brain injuries can be reduced.
B.NFL players used to pay much attention to CTE.
C.Repeated head blows can result in brain diseases.
D.Brain injuries can really be prevented with action.
【4】Which would most probably show Nick Buoniconti’s opinion?
A.Tackle football is less dangerous than people think.
B.Young children should avoid playing tackle football.
C.Tackle football should be made easier to play than before.
D.Young children often make mistakes while playing tackle football.

There is hope for our planet’s survival. Innovative products are being designed to reduce our reliance on plastic, single—use plastic in particular.
One such innovation comes from international design firm Carlo Ratti Associati with its“Feel the Peel” machine, an experimental rounded juice bar that not only makes freshly squeezed orange juice, but also 3D prints a recyclable bioplastic cup with the leftover orange peels.
Designed with global energy company Eni, the juicer is 10 feet tall and topped with a massive dome(圆顶),feeding the juicer with oranges on demand. The dome is made up of round tracks that hold up to 1,500 oranges. A 3D printer is set up in the base of the machine.
The machine goes like magic. When an order is placed, the oranges slide down the tracks to a squeezer, and the juice is then deposited into an “orange peel” bioplastic cup, ready to enjoy. Meanwhile, the freshly squeezed peels fall down a tube and accumulate at the bottom of the machine where they are dried, milled(碾磨) and mixed with Polylactic Acid, creating a bioplastic material. The bioplastic is then heated and melted into a filament and the 3D printer then creates recyclable bioplastic cups, ready to be filled with freshly squeezed juice.
How cool that is! It seems that Carlo Ratti Associati and Eni have plans to take Feel the Peel beyond just orange juice.
“The principle of circularity is a must for today’s objects,” says Carlo Ratti. “Working with Eni, we tried to show circularity in a very tangible(有形的)way, by developing a machine that helps us to understand how oranges can be used well beyond their juice. The next improvement of Feel the Peel might include new functions, such as printing fabric for clothing from orange peels.”
【1】What is the aim of creating the “Feel the Peel” machine?
A.To design innovative products. B.To produce single—use plastic cups.
C.To carry out various experiments. D.To take something beyond just juice.
【2】What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.How the new juicer works. B.What the two companies share.
C.Where the new tool comes from. D.Why the machine is catching on.
【3】According to Carlo Ratti, we can infer that_______.
A.circularity can be shown in a very popular way
B.their new machine still has some potentials
C.his company is very interested in Eni’s design
D.a product can help us understand our world
【4】What can be the best title for the text?
A.Orange Peels Arrive in a New Form
B.Innovative Products Are Being Designed
C.Orange Juicer 3D Prints Bioplastic Cups
D.Carlo Introduces a Recyclable Machine

Increasing Confidence
The world is changing rapidly and most people are very anxious about it. In fact, I think it might even be stronger and more accurate to say that most people are downright fearful of what they see going on around them. Technological changes and innovation are completely changing many aspects of our lives and they don’t stop there. Economic changes, social changes, scientific changes, political changes ... the list is endless.【1】.
While the specific answers about what to do take time and thought to uncover, the best way to approach the future and all of the changes can be summed up in one word:Confidence.【2】.Certainly some people seem to have much more of it than others but I believe that confidence is a skill that we can all develop. In some ways, it is undoubtedly the most important skill we can develop.【3】. Without confidence, even the smallest challenges seem too difficult to deal with.

The truth is that we are bigger than anything that can ever happen to us in life. We have the power and ability to overcome any obstacles in our path. And the most important tool you possess is confidence, believing in your ability to overcome the current challenge just like you have done so many times in the past.
Whatever challenge is currently in your life, know that it’s there to help you grow and expand.【5】.Remember, expanding your personal confidence will allow you to take on whatever you need to in order to fulfill your personal mission.
A.What I find fascinating is that people with confidence always end up on top.

“Okay,” said our teacher, Mrs. Woodland:“It’s time for the gift exchange.” I was actually a little excited. I knew what a lot of the girls had brought, and any of those gifts would be great, especially my best friend Sara’s. She had made some candy and put it in this super cute bear mug(马克杯).
Mrs. Woodland had us put our gifts on our classroom table. Then we opened the gifts like a game. We each drew numbers and we got to the table and chose a wrapped(包装好的) gift when our number was called. But we didn’t necessarily have to. We could take a gift from somebody else that had already had their number called—if we thought we’d like that gift better than the wrapped ones.
When it was my turn, I didn’t take a wrapped gift from the table. And I didn’t take Sara’s either though I really wanted to. I took the perfume(香水) Megan had brought instead. I didn’t have enough money to get Mom something special, but the perfume was really nice. She might really like it.
I was busy thinking about the perfume and whether Mom would like it or not when there was a big commotion(嘈杂). It had been Hannah’ s turn to choose. She was the last one. And unsurprisingly, she didn’t go for the last wrapped gift on the table. Instead, she’d taken Sara’s gift from Lauren. Well, that meant Lauren had to take the wrapped gift. She looked a little upset when she got to the table. Everyone knew the last gift was from Kali. That was why no one had chosen it. Kali was really poor. And she always brought gifts that no one ever wanted. This time, she brought a pair of old—fashioned crocheted potholders(编织的防烫套垫)!
“I don’t want these,” Lauren whined(哀怨).“I want my candy back.”
“No way,” Hannah protested, keeping the mug of chocolate out of Lauren’s reach.
“Then I want Megan’s perfume.” Lauren came over to take my perfume. “Come on, Melanie, trade with me.”
Paragraph 1:
Mrs. Woodland advised me to trade with Lauren since I had always been kind.
Paragraph 2:
“Here,” I said to my mom after I got home, handing her the potholders. “They are an early New Year gift.”
