Layton Guenther recently took a break from work to talk about moving from a wealthy neighborhood near New York City to a farm on Long Island. “Farming----where I grew up----was a very unusual career choice,” said the 32-year -old American.”But everybody belongs to the land in their own way. None of us should feel separated from it.”
Guenther was brought up in a rich town outside New York, where most people never think about working on a farm. Today Guenther grows potatoes, pumpkins, wheat and other crops at Quail Hill, New York. She is one of a growing number of college-educated Americans in their 20s and 30s who are changing the face of organic farming.
In the United States organic farming is a growing industry. Some of the best-known organic farms on Long Island are operated by women. Women make up a little more than 37 percent of all organic farmers nationwide. They represent 36 percent of all commercial farmers. Experts predict women’s share in farming is likely to increase. One reason organic farmers are more popular is that their smaller size means less money is needed to support them. The average organic farm is around 141 hectares, compared to 178 hectares for a commercial farm.
These new young farmers chose organic farming because of their desire to have an influence on society.
Guenther said that the farmers meant to protect natural resources for future generation, to fight against climate change and to feed their community good and healthy food.
Although organic farming is growing quickly, it comes with high labor costs and at times smaller harvests than commercial farming. So it can be a difficult business for new farmers. “When I look now at the starting of the farm, it seems really audacious,”Guenther said.”But in that environment ,in2008, everyone had lost their jobs and there was no work. So it didn’t feel strange to start something new,” she said.

Peter Shankman travels for a living, delivering speeches around the country. The last thing he wants to do in his spare time is travel from his home in New York.
So for the fifth year in a row, Shankman is donating hundreds of thousands of miles to people in need-----those who can’t afford to buy a flight, but intend to be with sick loved ones, or a parent who would like to see a faraway child.
Shankman posts his contest on the social media site Imgur, and other Imgur users vote for winners of Shankman’s miles. After the initial year of the giveaway, other travellers started seeing Shankman’s posts on Imgur and began donating their miles to his contest, multiplying the gift.
One of those donors is Rhys Ford, whose reason for donating her extra miles to Shankman’s “Home for the Holidays” giveaway is simple and heartfelt. “ There are many of us who have so much, and there are others who are far away from their family and can’t make it back for financial reasons,” she said.
Shankman said one of the big advantages of giving away his miles is that it allows him to pass along a lesson about giving to his son. Shankman’s goal, he said , is to help children and adults with ADHD(多动症) realize that they are not broken, but gifted.
“They just need to learn how to channel and use that power. I have ADHD, but I believe it is a huge part of my success,” said Shankman.
“People ask me how I verify the stories of people who win the free miles,” Shankman said. “And I tell them, ‘I can’t.’ But if someone goes to all this trouble to get a free trip somewhere, maybe this will help them in some way. As long as my miles keep adding up, I’m going to continue to give them away.

Is it possible that the sinking of the Titanic was caused by a ghost? A lot of the story below is true… but did it really happen quite like this?
Our story begins not in the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic, but rather thousands of miles away in Egypt. It is here, perhaps, that we can find the start of the mystery of the Titanic, in the year 1910, in the great city of Cairo. One day, a famous professor of Egyptian history called Douglas Murray was staying in Cairo, when he was contacted by an American adventurer.
The American had something unusual to offer Murray, something that was certain to thrill him: a beautiful ancient Egyptian mummy case, containing the mummy of an Egyptian queen. It was over 3000 years old, but in beautiful condition — gold, with bright paintings on it. Murray was delighted with both the object and the asking price. He gave the man a cheque immediately.
The cheque was never cashed. That evening the American adventurer died. For his part, Murray arranged to have the treasure sent back to Britain. However, it was not long before he learnt more about the beautiful mummy case: On the walls of the tomb in which it had been discovered, there were messages which warned of terrible consequences to anyone who broke into the tomb. Murray was disbelieving of these warnings until a few days later, when a gun he was holding exploded in his hand, shattering his arm. The arm had to be cut off.
After the accident, Murray decided to return to his homeland. On the return journey, two of his companions died mysteriously, and two servants who had handled the mummy also passed away. The now-terrified Murray decided he would get rid of the cursed case as soon as he arrived in London. A lady he knew named Janet Jones said she would like it, so he gave it to her. Shortly afterwards, Jones’ mother died, and she herself caught a strange disease. She tried returning the mummy, but naturally Murray refused it. In the end, it was presented to the British Museum.
Even in the museum, the mummy apparently continued to cause strange events. A museum photographer died shortly after taking pictures of the new exhibit; and a manager also died for no apparent reason. In the end, the British Museum decided to get rid of the mummy too. They sold it to a collector in New York.
At the start of April 1912, arrangements for the transfer were complete, and the mummy began the journey to its new home. But the New Yorker never received the mummy or its case. For when the Titanic sank, one of the objects in its strong room was the mummy case. Or so they say.

Fun Writing Activities for Struggling Writers
There are dozens of reasons kids struggle with writing. They may have difficulty getting their thoughts down on paper.【1】Perhaps grammar and language barriers are blocking their progress. Whatever the reason, adding a little fun can be a great way to get the creative juices flowing.
【2】
Sometimes writers get stuck because they simply don’t know where to start. For a child, you can try things that are geared(合适)toward their interests, like My Favorite Toy, or What I Like to Do in the Summer. Remember, it' s important to support and guide their ideas, not to discourage thoughts or judge them.
Develop a story map
A great activity to help struggling writers is to build a story map. Write down ideas for the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Or put the topic in the middle of the paper and draw lines out like a wheel for who, what where, and why. 【3】 This is helpful, because it takes stress out of the writing process.
Make writing relevant
Children are more apt to write if they can identify with the purpose of writing. Writing a letter to a friend or relative can better engage a struggling writer. Or maybe your child has some suggestions for books that the library should have. 【4】 If writing becomes a more meaningful activity to the child, it can help to make it an easier process.
Make writing enjoyable
You could consider making different writing supplies available like colored pens and pencils, notebooks, etc. Or you could provide a word bank of common words for your kid to use and spell. 【5】 Afterwards, reward your child’s good performance. These all set the stage and invite kids to get excited to write.
A. Inspire ideas
B. Develop an interest.
C. Use the map to guide the writing.
D. Make the process into more of a game.
E. Maybe they lack experiences to write about
F. There are loads of fun ways to get children writing.
G. Encourage him to write a letter to the person in charge

They speak loudly in public places, carve characters at tourist attractions, throw a rubbish everywhere, even cross the road when the traffic lights are still red.
