Even in the best and most loving of times, families can feel impossibly confined (受限制的). Teens are irritable and furious. Parents are annoying and embarrassing. For Esther and her daughter Chaya, the tiny new coronavirus changed all that.
Esther was born in Wuhan-a dynamic and culturally rich place that she deeply loves but moved to the U.S. During the winter holiday, they went to Wuhan to visit Esther’s parents. Gradually at first, then more frequently, they noticed face masks on city streets. To be safe, they wore their own masks and stopped going to public gatherings. Then, suddenly the city was on lockdown. No one could leave. Their reservations home on a China Southern airlines flight were worthless. “I feared for my daughter’s life,” said Esther, “If it got worse, there could be chaos. She doesn’t speak much Chinese.”
For days, Esther repeatedly called and emailed for help. It was nonstop. She stayed online, checking all the time. Chaya felt distressed and helpless. It's awful seeing her mother go through that-without having anything she could do to help in the hotel.
Their luck changed with one email. For the 1,000 Americans stuck in Wuhan, there were 230 available seats on one outbound flight, it said. Esther bought two $1,100 seats. After a 12-hour wait at the airport, they got clearance to leave, and arrived at March Air Force Base, where they were isolated in two small connected rooms with a shared bath for two weeks. There were daily medical checkups, twice daily temperature checks and a 10 a m. briefing (简报). But there was no WiFi, TV or friends. For emotional support, Esther phoned her husband Haim, an engineering manager for Uber, and their two other children, ages 13 and 11.
Now home, they are basking in (沉浸于) the thrill of phone calls, TV interviews and a caring community. They’ve gotten little sleep. Suitcases remain unpacked. But anyhow, they have survived not just the outbreak of a virus but the unforgettable experience of mother-daughter togetherness.
【1】What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A.The culture and vitality of Wuhan have attracted Esther and Chaya there.
B.The virus has affected people's life in Wuhan.
C.The flight of going back to the U.S. has been postponed.
D.The city was locked down because it was in chaos.
【2】What caused Chaya's depressed mood?
A.Seeing her mother suffer from reaching out for help. B.Being kept in Wuhan for poor health.
C.Missing her family and friends at home. D.Being unable to speak Chinese.
【3】Why were they isolated after Esther and Chaya arrived at the airport?
A.The concern of their safety as well as the public’s.
B.Their infection of the virus.
C.The lack of flight home.
D.Their emotional problems after the experience.
【4】What is the best title of the text?
A.Life in Wuhan: fighting the virus together.
B.Life about people infected by the virus.
C.Life about a mom and teen united by a virus.
D.Life about a mom and daughter from the U.S.

On November 7, Lewis Pugh completed a one-kilometer swim in the freezing waters of King Edward Cove, off South Georgia in Antarctica. He was wearing only his swimming glasses, cap and Speedo !
Pugh is an advocate for our oceans and seas, working to protect these ecosystems with their large diversity of marine life. When asked why he doesn't wear a wetsuit(防寒泳衣), Pugh says, "I ask world leaders to do everything they can to protect our oceans. Sometimes the steps they need to take are difficult and unpopular. If I'm asking them to be courageous, I must also be. Swimming in a wetsuit would not send the right message."
It took Pugh about 19 minutes to complete the one-kilometer swim in Antarctica where the water averaged about 1.6 degrees Celsius. He says that his body can only tolerate about 20 minutes in the freezing waters before it starts shutting down. As he swims, his body temperature steadily drops, which in turn causes his muscle control to drop, slowing him down. When he is done with his swim, his support team rushes him to a hot shower and it takes almost an hour for his body temperature to return to normal.
Doctors and Pugh caution that one must receive months of training to swim in such cold waters. Even expert swimmers who are unused to freezing water can drown within minutes because of the physical shock experienced by the body. Pugh says he trained for six months before this swim.
This is not the first time that Pugh has swum in dangerous conditions. In 2007, he swam one kilometer in the North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change. In 2015, he swam in the Bay of Whales in Antarctica's Ross Sea as part of his successful campaign to help set up a marine reserve there.

A.To show his bravery.
B.To swim faster.
C.To build up his body.
D.To have overnight fame.

A.His body temperature.
B.His body
C.The water.
D.The water temperature.
【3】What's Pugh's advice about swimming in freezing waters?
A.One should be expert at swimming.
B.One must be used to long-distance swimming.
C.One should be ready to take on challenges.
D.One must be adequately prepared for it.
【4】What may be the best title for the text?
A.Lewis Pugh: achieving the impossible
B.How to survive a swim in cold waters
C.Lewis Pugh: swimming for a cause
D.How to prepare for extreme swimming

BEIJING -- IMAX, 3D, 5G and VR -- These were dominant themes at the 10th Beijing International Film Festival that concluded on Saturday.
"5G together with other technologies like cloud computing, big data and artificial intelligence are going to shape the film industry in China," said Zhang Wei, director of the China Film Science and Technology Research Institute.
"From black-and-white movies to color films, from 2D to 3D and IMAX, the film industry has seen multiple revolutions and changes upon the emergence and upgrading of film-related technologies," noted Chen Sicheng, a Chinese movie director.
In 2010, when the American science fiction movie "Avatar" was screened in China, tickets were snapped up and cinemas were overflowing with audiences. The Chinese market for 3D films has been growing ever since.
China has introduced favorable policies for the application of 5G, AR, MR and other emerging technologies in the film industry, according to film industry insiders at the festival.
"5G technology is going to revolutionize the whole film industry. Cloud transmission, real-time rendering(实时成像), intelligent distribution, efficient data capturing and collaborative(协作的) production in different locations around the world will be the new normal," said Hu Zhifeng, vice president of the Beijing Film Academy.
It took China, now the world's second-largest film market, less than 10 years to grow its box office revenue from 1 billion yuan (about $145.66 million) to over 60 billion yuan.

"Both its selection of themes and the leveraging(杠杆) of special effects have reached world standards. In fact, there is not much difference between China and Hollywood in the level of film production, and China has become a world-class film production center," he said.
Sun Jiashan, an associate researcher of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, pointed out that the popularity of many Chinese-made movies including "Wolf Warrior 2" and "The Wandering Earth" over recent years has proven the huge potential in China's growing film market.
"Compared with Hollywood, there are not many box office blockbusters(一鸣惊人的事物) among made-in-China movies. But China is on the right track by attracting more experts in the field and continuing to optimize(优化) its systems and policies for the film industry," said Feng Wei, vice president of the Asia-Pacific region and president of the Greater China region of the Motion Picture Association of America.

I am a 18-year-old middle school student. I have been busy on my study and seldom helped my parents with the housework. Felt quite sorry for that, I decided to do anything. Last Sunday, when my parents went out shopping, I suddenly got an idea: why not give the rooms a thoroughly cleaning? Firstly I collected all the books, newspapers and other things scattered in the rooms and put them in the place. Then I wiped the dust off all the furnitures. After that, I swept and mop the floors. At this very moment, parents came back and were quite surprising to see all the rooms tidy and floors shining. My mother gave me a hug and I could see satisfaction in her eyes. Tired as I was, I felt very happy.
