It was an extremely cold December night, and I had just settled into the living room sofa with a book when I heard a sharp knocking on the front door. The sound frightened me, mainly because it was 8:45 PM, quite dark outside, and I was alone. My husband had left two days before for a meeting.
I sat thinking for a moment about who could be at my door at that hour. I live on a really quiet street on the North Shore about a block off the main road. Hours can go by without a car or pedestrian(行人)passing in front of my home, a small house that's more than 100 years old.
Another moment passed. More sharp knocking. And then a face pressed against the square window in my front door, with which I made eye contact(接触). A woman's face. She was saying something, but I couldn't make it out.
I wish I could say that the first thing I wanted to do was to jump off the sofa to help this woman, but I hesitated(犹豫)because of all the bad stories about women who open their doors to strangers. What went through my mind was this: What if I open the door and she isn't alone but has an accomplice(同伙)hiding behind that big plant, and then they both come in and kill me?
Still, I opened the door. If I was killed, I had had a good life. She ran into my living room "Gracias. My phone---is dead." Speaking mostly Spanish, but intermixed with bits of English, the woman indicated(暗示)that she was lost, that her phone was dead and that she needed to call her sister who was supposed to have picked her up at the train station but hadn't. So she had decided to try and walk to her sister's but had gotten completely lost in the dark.
I offered to make her some tea while we waited for her phone to charge enough so that she could show me her sister's address.
【1】Why does the author mention her surroundings in Paragraph 2?
A.To show off her wealth and social position.
B.To stress her house can seldom be visited.
C.To express her satisfaction with her life.
D.To explain how to find her house easily.
【2】How did the author react to the knocking?
A.She turned a deaf ear to it.
B.She answered it immediately.
C.She asked her husband for advice.
D.She thought twice before opening the door.
【3】What can we learn about the stranger?
A.She mistook her sister's address.
B.She was a native English speaker.
C.She meant to turn to the author for help.
D.She got in touch with her sister just recently.
【4】Which of the following words can best describe the ending of the story?
A.Unusual. B.Relaxing.
C.Frightening. D.Painful.

Organic food (有机食品) is very popular. It is also expensive. Some organic food costs twice as much as nonorganic food. Some parents and pet owners pay up to 200 percent more for organic food while some people think organic food is a waste of money.
There is one main difference between organic and nonorganic food. Organic farms do not use agricultural chemicals, such as pesticides (杀虫剂). This makes sure that the products are natural.
Some people think “organic” means “locally grown”. At the beginning, this was true. Over time organic farming became more difficult. The demand for organic food grew larger than the supply. Small companies had to sell out to large companies. There weren’t enough organic materials. This made it difficult for many organic companies to stay in business. Today, many large companies have an organic line of products.
Is organic food more nutritious (有营养的)? This is part of the debate. Many farmers and consumers (消费者) believe it is. They think agricultural chemicals cause health problems, such as cancer. Many health experts disagree. Few studies prove that organic food prevents health problems. Health experts worry more about bacteria (细菌). These can come into contact with organic and nonorganic food. Doctors recommend washing produce very carefully.
Most people agree that naturally grown food tastes better. Is tastier food worth the extra money? This is a matter of opinion. Whether it is healthier or not may require more research. However, organic consumers argue it is better to be safe than sorry.
【1】What is probably the major concern(关注) of organic food consumers?
A.Price. B.Safety.
C.Freshness. D.Variety.
【2】What is the doctors’ suggestion?
A.Grow your own food. B.Reduce the use of pesticides.
C.Make sure the food is clean. D.Buy large companies’ products.
【3】Which of the following do most people agree on organic food?
A.It tastes better. B.It is easier to grow.
C.It contains more fat. D.It is more nutritious.
【4】Where does this text probably come from?
A.A health magazine. B.A medical report.
C.A chemistry paper. D.A menu of a restaurant.

Earthquakes usually happen on the edges of large sections of the Earth’s plates. These plates slowly move over a long period of time. Sometimes the edges, which are called fault lines, can get stuck, but the plates keep moving. Pressure slowly starts to build up where the edges are stuck and, once the pressure gets strong enough, the plates will suddenly move causing an earthquake.
Generally before and after a large earthquake there will be smaller earthquakes. The ones that happen before are called foreshocks. The ones that happen after are called aftershocks. Scientists don’t really know if an earthquake is a foreshock until the bigger earthquake occurs.
Shock waves from an earthquake that travel through the ground are called seismic waves (地震波). They are most powerful at the center of the earthquake, but they travel through much of the earth and back to the surface. They move quickly at 20 times the speed of sound.
Scientists use seismic waves to measure how big an earthquake is. They use a device called a seismograph (地震仪) to measure the size of the waves. The size of the waves is called the magnitude.
To tell the strength of an earthquake scientists use a scale called the Moment Magnitude Scale or MMS (it used to be called the Richter scale). The larger the number on the MMS scale, the larger the earthquake. You usually won’t even notice an earthquake unless it measures at least a 3 on the MMS scale. Here are some examples of what may happen depending on the scale:
4.0-Could shake your house as if a large truck were passing close by. Some people may not notice.
5.0-If you are in a car, it may shake. Glasses and dishes may rattle. Windows may break.
6.0- Items will fall off shelves. Walls in some houses may crack and windows break. Pretty much everyone near the center will feel this one.
7.0- Weaker buildings will collapse and cracks will occur in bridges and on the street.
8.0- Many buildings and bridges fall down. Large cracks in the earth.
9.0 and up- Whole cities flattened and large-scale damage.
【1】If a 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit your area, what might happen?
A.Your house might shake violently. B.People might feel no shaking at all.
C.The family photo may fall off the wall. D.There might be cracks everywhere on the street.
【2】What does the author mean by saying the underlined sentence in paragraph2?
A.It’s still hard to tell foreshocks from main earthquakes.
B.Scientists can’t exactly measure the strength of an earthquake.
C.People may ignore foreshocks when an earthquake is not so strong.
D.The earthquake won’t cause any damage unless it reaches 9.0 MMS.
【3】The writer explains the concepts concerning the earthquake by .
A.listing examples B.giving explanations
C.making comparisons D.offering data
【4】The passage is written mainly to .
A.enrich people’s knowledge of self-rescue in disasters
B.stress the importance of earthquake rescue

Carlos woke up late that Saturday. It was his birthday. As he opened his eyes, he could hear the sounds from the street coming through his open window. He could hear people talking loudly. He heard kids playing and yelling (大喊). There was music coming from someone standing on the corner. He heard the cars, buses and motorbikes running past his apartment. These were all the normal sounds he heard every day, but something was wrong.
When he listened for the sounds that normally came from his apartment, everything was silent. He did not hear his mother cooking in the kitchen. She always made a big breakfast on Saturdays. He did not hear his sister Maria jumping up and down or fighting with their brother Jose. What was wrong? The house was completely silent. The only noise was coming from outside his window.
Carlos looked at the clock across the room. It said ten o'clock. Something was very wrong! Carlos quickly got up and got dressed. He looked out of the window and saw everyone walking and talking. That was all normal. What was not normal was how quiet it was inside his apartment. Carlos went slowly to the door and listened, but did not hear anything. He opened the door to his room a little and looked around. He looked down the hallway (门厅) toward the living room. He did not see anything. He was nervous and scared, wondering, “What is going on?”
Slowly he walked out of his room and into the hallway. His stomach was making noise since he was so hungry. He started toward the kitchen. His feet moved slowly as he walked, not knowing what to expect. “Mom? Jose? Maria? Where are you?” he called out, but no one answered. “Where is everyone?” he thought to himself. Just then, Carlos thought he heard a noise coming from the kitchen. It sounded like someone was there. He moved slowly toward the kitchen doorway, and thought to himself, “What's going on? Why is everything so quiet? Who is in the kitchen?”
Paragraph 1:
He got to the kitchen door and looked inside.
