Educating girls quite possibly yields a higher rate of return than any other investment available in the developing world. Women's education may be unusual territory for economists, but enhancing women's contribution to development is actually as much an economic as a social issue. And economics, with its emphasis on incentives(激励), provides guidepost that point to an explanation for why so many girls are deprived of education. ____①_____ .
Parents in low-income countries fail to invest in their daughters because they do not expect them to make an economic contribution to the family: girls grow up only to marry into somebody else's family and bear children. ____②_____. Girls are thus seen as less valuable than boys and are kept at home to do housework while their brothers are sent to school—the prohecy(预言) becomes self-fulfilling, trapping women in a vicious circle (恶性循环) of neglect.
An educated mother, on the other hand, has greater earning abilities outside the home and faces an entirely different set of choices. She is likely to have fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development of all her children, ensuring that her daughters are given a fair chance. The education of her daughters then makes it much more likely that the next generation of girls, as well as of boys, will be educated and healthy. ____③_____. The vicious circle is thus transformed into a virtuous circle.
Few will argue that educating women has great social benefits. ____④_____. Most obviously, there is the direct effect of education on the wages of female workers. Wages rise by 10 to 20 per cent for each additional year of schooling. Such big returns are impressive by the standard of other available investments, but they are just the beginning. Educating women also has a significant impact on health practices, including family planning.
【1】What does the author say about women’s education?
A. It deserves greater attention than other social issues.
B. It is now the main concern in many developing countries.
C. It will yield greater returns than other known investments.
D. It has aroused the interest of a growing number of economists.
【2】What can be inferred by saying the underlined sentence in paragraph 2?
A. Girls will turn out to be less valuable than boys.
B. Girls will be capable of realizing their own dreams.
C. Girls will eventually find their goals in life beyond reach.
D. Girls will be increasingly discontented with their life at home.
【3】The sentence “But it has enormous economic advantages as well” can be best placed in _______.
A. ① B. ②
C. ③ D. ④

As people in rich countries know very well, eating too much food and burning too few calories is why a substantial number of us are overweight or obese. Now, however a remarkable change in perspective has come from the discovery that obesity actually provides people with temporary protection from the harmful effects of fat.
The insight has come from re-examming the common assumption that fatness itself drives the development of metabolic syndrome(代谢综合征), which is what causes so much of the actual damage. The syndrome comes with a mixture of life-threatening effects, with heart disease being among the most serious. In fact, it now seems that body fat may be a barrier that stops millions of Americans and fatty citizens elsewhere from going on to develop the syndrome. And the real damage is caused by the inflammatory(发炎的)effect of high levels of fat in the bloodstream. And ironically, it is fat cells that protect us from this by serving as toxin dumps (毒素垃圾场), locking away the real trouble-makers of the modern diet.
The problem is that this protection only lasts this long, until there is simply no more room inside the fat cells. That is when they start to break down, leading to a toxin spill(毒素溢出)into the bloodstream. This sets off an inflammatory response that causes various kinds of damage to body tissues. In this way, every extra calorie takes people closer to metabolic syndrome.
So what can we do to stop a superabundance of fat triggering the syndrome? Of course there’s no substitute for a healthy diet and exercise, but actually involving them into your daily life is hard. As with cigarettes and alcohol, a tax on calories—pricing foods by their energy content—is increasingly seen as another “level” to change behavior by making obesity too costly.
The new research may even suggest treatments to fight against metabolic syndrome, such as anti-inflammatory drugs. One promising candidate is salsalate, a drug related to aspirin, and the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston is now considering large-scale trials.
What might be more helpful though, is simply a wider recognition that fatty and sugary foods are more directly toxic than we has assumed. Ideally, people should be as well informed about the harmful effects of what they eat as, for example, pregnant women are about drinking and smoking.
It is a relief to know that you have your fat tissue to protect you when you consume the extra burger or sweetened soda. But now you know the dangers of pushing your friendly fat cells beyond their natural limits.
【1】From Paragraph 2 we know that the actual damage to health is likely to be caused by_________.
A. fat cells B. metabolic syndrome
C. heart disease D. bloodstream fats
【2】The protective function of fat cells stops working once ________________.
A. their capacity reaches a limit B. toxin spills into the bloodstream
C. an inflammatory response appears D. metabolic syndrome is developed
【3】The author indicates in the text that obesity can be restricted by ______________.
A. putting fats' protective function to full use
B. unifying people's diet and exercise habits
C. raising the prices of cigarettes and alcohol
D. controlling food prices by their calorie content
【4】What is the author's suggestion to fight against metabolic syndrome?
A. develop more drugs for heart disease
B. ask people to keep away from fatty and sugary food completely
C. strengthen the awareness of the harms of fatty and sugary food
D. protect pregnant women from tobacco and wine

The First Hello
The man from the telephone department got off the bus, and made his way to the tea stall, wiping the sweat off his head, face, then slipping his handkerchief under his shirt to wipe his neck and back. It was a year ago that the phone line had been installed, six months later men from the public works department had come to put up the phone booth — a neat box-like structure, with a glass window, and wooden ledges, yellow in color. And days after that, a painter had taken an entire day to color in broad, black brushstrokes, the words: STD Booth, local and STD allowed.
No one could tell that the last word had been misspelled. Besides, he had taken the entire day. After he had a cup of tea, he had left, waving cheerfully. And now months later, someone else was here again.
Everyone watched the man as he sat on the bench. No one said a word, and soon the sound of him slurping his tea filled the hot afternoon. A few leaves fell, heavy in the heat, and sometimes a car passed, on its way to the main city farther away.
When the man had finished, he made to pay but the tea shop owner who sat behind his steaming kettle and the washed upturned cups, waved him away.
“You are our guest here.”
So the man took his handkerchief out again and wiped his face.
They crowded around him as he shut himself up in the phone booth. When the children pressed their nose against the glass, he shooed them away, as he took out a shiny black instrument and placed it on the narrow shelf. A sigh of satisfaction passed through everyone that soon changed to an excited yell as they saw him dial a number, pressing a finger into the ringed dialer of the phone and letting it go all the way in a half-circle. A while later, they hear him say into the mouthpiece, “Hello.”
“Hello,” the children around the booth took up the cry, the teashop owner broke into a smile and the men waiting for a bus smiled and said hello to each other. The sadhu(印度的僧人) who sat under the banyan tree nodded wisely. As the sound carried, more hellos were heard. The women winnowing grain giggled as they tried the word tentatively, the shepherds feeding their flocks called out to their sheep, laughing as they used the word.
“It‘s a big occasion,” said the headman, in an awed voice.
“It is,” agreed those around him. The telephone man emerged and handed over a small chit of paper to the headman. “This is the telephone number”.
The headman looked at it reverently as if it were a mantra(符咒). The others around him read out the numbers slowly, digit-by-digit.
The telephone man was now too tired to notice the cheering around him. He knew he had to wait long before the bus to take him back arrived. As he sipped his second cup of tea, he remembered something else.
“Oh, you can’t start using the phone now. The minister will come next month and inaugurate it.”
No one said a word. No one was surprised. They had waited so long; a month more did not really matter.
【1】In the story, fitting a working telephone booth __________.
A. was a process that had already taken 12 months B. was in the charge of the headman.
C. should have been finished more than a year ago D. was an artistic challenge for a local painter
【2】A misspelled word on the booth __________.
A. was a joke shared by the painter and the local people B. made the painter miss his tea break
C. went unnoticed by the local people D. kept everyone occupied for an entire day

A. the hot afternoon was filled with quiet expectation
B. there was a sudden rush of activity in the village
C. he was greeted like a regular customer
D. he learned about the village while having a nice drink
【4】What can be inferred from the story?
A. The man from the telephone department had a mentally demanding job.
B. Only the minister had the authority to make the first call.
C. It was a distant village free from modern technology.
D. Few of the local children went to school for education.
【5】The examples of the children, the teashop owner, the men waiting for the bus, the women and the shepherds are given to illustrate __________.
A. the local people’s curiosity for the new thing
B. the ignorance of the local people
C. the local people’s enthusiasm for English learning
D. the popularity of the man from the telephone department
【6】What words can be used to best describe the local people?
A. Innocent and cooperative. B. Hospitable and respectful.

Interviewing someone for a job is not as easy as it looks. First, as the interviewer, you’re tasked with finding the person who will not only do the job well but also fit in well with the other employees.
You have to make an evaluation of abstract qualities that can’t be found on a résumé. Because you have to repeat the process for every potential employee, you end up asking question after question, applicant after applicant.
Still, interviewers need to be told something: “What is your biggest weakness?” is not a good question. It just isn’t.
Now, job seekers have to understand that interviewers want to find some way to know what makes an applicant different from others. Asking questions that are seemingly impossible to answer is one way to see who can think creatively. Then what may be a proper way to respond to such a question?
Honesty, with a twist(新手法)
“‘What are your three strengths and three weaknesses?’ is a classic, but not too many people know how to answer this,” says Kenneth C. Wisnefski, founder and CEO of WebiMax, an online marketing company.
“As an interviewer, we want to hear strengths that describe initiative(主动性), motivation and dedication. The best way to respond is to include these qualities into specific ‘personal statements.’”
“Similarly, weaknesses should be positioned as a strength that can benefit the employer.”
“I like to hear applicants state an exaggerated strength, and put an interesting twist on it. An example of this is, ‘My initiative is so strong, that sometimes I take on too many projects at a time.’”
This answer leads with a strength that employers want — initiative — and still acknowledges that you’re not perfect.
Although you might consider this acknowledgement too honest, it works because it proves you’re being honest.
Honesty, with progress
When you consider what your weaknesses are, think about how you have attempted to overcome them. No one is perfect, so pretending that you are a perfectionist will come across as insincere.
Debra Davenport, author of “Career Shuffle,” believes citing(引用) examples are the best approach.
“My preferred response for this question is to tell the truth without damaging the applicant’s image.” Davenport explains.
“A better response might be, ‘I’ve had some challenges with work-life balance in the past and I realize that a life out of balance isn’t good for me, my family or my employer. I’ve taken the time to learn better time and project management, and I’m also committed to my overall wellness.’”
The answer adds some dimension to the question, and proves you’ve thought beyond the answer. You’ve actually changed your behavior to address the situation, even if you haven’t completely overcome the weakness.
Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes
However you decide to answer, Debra Yergen, author of “Creating Job Security Resource Guide,” recommends job seekers imagine themselves sitting on the other side of the desk.
“If you were doing the hiring, what would you be looking for? What would be your motivation for asking certain questions? Who would you be trying to weed out? If you can empathize (共鸣) with the interviewer, you can better understand what they want and need, and then frame your qualifications to meet their needs for the position you seek.”
Once you consider what the goal of the question is and figure out what your honest answer is, you’ll be able to give the best possible answer to a tricky question.

On May 5, 2018, a young girl was murdered by her driver for DIDI, and three months later, on August 24 another female passenger was killed by her driver for DIDI.
