Zhong Nanshan grew up in a family of doctors. It was he who came up with an effective treatment for SARS. In 2003, when SARS hit China, he volunteered to treat patients. At the same time, he also spent countless nights in his lab looking for a cure for this deadly disease. Several months later, his treatment plan for SARS saved thousands of lives in China.
Zhong lives by a simple motto: save lives and always be honest. He thinks that rumors can ruin everything. So instead of telling a lie, he bravely told the public the truth. When interviewed in 2003, he said, “The situation of SARS is not all under control.” His honesty won respect from the Chinese public, who regarded him as a hero.
Seventeen years later, 59 citizens in Wuhan caught pneumonia of unknown etiology in 2020, which was called COVID-19. 84-year-old Zhong Nanshan led his team to Wuhan at the earliest time. He was aware that it may not be a simple disease, but a disaster that could engulf the world.
On January 29, Zhong and his team spent over six hours on an online medical meeting, checking five patients who were in bad conditions. As well as treating the patients, he asked other younger doctors to help him make videos on the Internet. In the videos, he calmed people’s fears and taught the public how to prevent the disease, such as how to wash hands or wear a mask correctly.
“The hospitals are our battlefield, and doctors are all fighters. When we are needed, we should go forward, because this is our duty!” said Zhong. “And tens of thousands of citizens in Wuhan prevent the spread of the disease. They are all heroes.”

Singapore is trying a new way to get its residents(居民)to stay away from each other. On Friday, the government announced it would start using Spot--a four-legged robot “dog” at one local park. The robot “dog” will patrol(巡逻)the area starting this weekend and broadcast a pre-recorded message to remind visitors of the importance of social distancing.
Spot will also be equipped with cameras that will scan the surroundings and help officials tell the number of people gathering in parks. “These cameras will not be able to track or recognize specific individuals, and no personal data will be collected,” the government said in a statement.
The government says it’s also using Spot in another place-at a local isolation facility(隔离设施)where the robot helps bring medicine to patients. Spot is generally used for inspections on construction sites or similar situations. It also has been used for public safety reasons.
Singapore’s government said Friday that it had picked the model for its flexibility. “Unlike wheeled robots, Spot, although not cheap, is very flexible, making it ideal for operation in public parks and gardens,” it noted. For now, at least one park guard will be patrolling the area along with the robot, according to the government. The new measure is an experiment to improve enforcement of social distancing throughout Singapore.

The plant chemicals in chocolate can help blood flow, explained scientists.
Lead author Dr. Chayakrit Krittanawong said, “Our study suggests chocolate helps keep the heart’s blood vessels (血管) healthy.” People who ate chocolate more than once a week reduced their risk of coronary artery disease (冠状动脉疾病) by eight percent. This was compared to peers who ate it less than once a week.
When LDL (low-density lipoprotein) collects, it causes vessels and arteries to become blocked up. LDL can prevent blood flow to the heart or brain, causing a heart attack or a stroke. Dr Krittanawong said, “In the past, clinical studies have shown chocolate is beneficial to blood pressure.”
Dark chocolate has long been known to be good for our health. However, recent research has suggested milk chocolate may also provide valuable nutrients for the heart. Dr. Krittanawong pointed out his study did not investigate whether any particular type of chocolate is more beneficial. He said, “Chocolate is of great help to prevent coronary artery disease. But more research is needed to show how much and what kind of chocolate could be recommended.”
While it’s not clear how much is perfect, Dr. Krittanawong warned against overeating. He said, “Moderate amounts of chocolate seem to protect the coronary arteries, but it’s likely that large quantities do not.”
【1】What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The result of the study. B.The process of the study.
C.The goal of the study. D.The means of the study.
【2】Which of the following can probably stop blood flow?
A.A heart attack. B.A stroke.
C.High-density lipoprotein. D.Low-density lipoprotein.
【3】What does the recent research in Paragraph 4 tell us?
A.Chocolate is good for blood pressure. B.Dark chocolate is beneficial to health.
C.Milk chocolate may also benefit the heart. D.Chocolate contains special plant chemicals.
【4】What’s Dr. Kittanawong’s attitude toward chocolate’s preventing coronary artery disease?
A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Negative. D.Unconcerned.
