Global warming is a big problem that we have to stop. One of the best things we can do is to plant more trees.Trees can take in carbon dioxide in the air and stop global warming. According to a new report, China is doing a great job of “greening”the world.
A team of scientists at Boston University has been working with NASA to study Earth’s green vegetation (植被). They used a special NASA camera and found that global leaf area has increased by 5 percent since the early 2000s. And according to the study,China was responsible for 25 percent of that gain. That’s about one-quarter of the size of the entire Amazon rainforest.
The growth mainly came from China’s forest protection programs, NASA said. For example, since 1962, China has been planting trees in Saihanba in Hebei Province. It was once a desert. But now, China has turned the area into the country’s largest man-made forest.
The Chinese public has also joined in these efforts. Ant Forest, a feature(功能)in the Alipay app, gives users points for doing some eco-friendly(对生态环境友好的)things. Users can then use these points to water and grow their own virtual trees. When the virtual trees are big enough, Ant Forest will plant real trees somewhere in the world. More than 55 million trees have been planted in this way.
【1】Which of the following is NOT an advantage of planting trees?
A. Ending world hunger. B. Turning deserts into forests.
C. Taking in carbon dioxide. D. Stopping global warming.
【2】What did the scientists at Boston University find out?
A. Planting more trees has slowed global warming down.
B. India has planted about 25 percent of the Amazon rainforest.
C. China has greatly increased its amount of green vegetation.
D. China and India are responsible for global warming.
【3】What’s the meaning of the underlined word “virtual”?
A. 网上的 B. 虚拟的 C. 真实的 D. 假冒的
【4】The last paragraph mainly tells about _______________.

Traveling is not always happy, at least for the buddies in the movie Green Book. The popular film won Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards on Feb 25.
The movie was adapted from the true story of a road trip through the southern US in the early 1960s.
In the film, the black pianist Don Shirley hires Italian-American Tony Vallelonga to drive him to performances, but they face problems because of Shirley’s skin color. These problems lead them to form a special friendship.
“There’s something so deeply right about this movie, so true to the time,” wrote US film critic Mick LaSalle. The time LaSalle is talking about was between late 1870s and 1960s, a very different period in US history. Many parts of the country had Jim Crow laws (《吉姆·克劳法》), which allowed racial segregation (种族隔离). These laws made life and travel 39 for African-Americans. They couldn’t use certain hotels, restaurants, or even gas stations. They had to be indoors after sunset or they might be put into prison. Even black celebrities (名人) had to follow the laws.
But in 1936, a black mail carrier named Victor H. Green had an idea. He made a list of friendly businesses in New York City. He published the list as a small book with a green cover. The Green Book helped African-Americans travel more safely. Then, in 1964, Jim Crow laws went away. The book went away, too.
Today many US people still remember the time of Jim Crow. But they probably don’t know about The Green Book. It’s a forgotten part of the story. Thanks to this movie, maybe people can remember it again.

The campus snack shop is a place where many students enjoy a snack and a chat. However, it may become a thing of the past. China’s educational and health authorities have banned (禁止) snack shops in all kindergartens, primary, middle and high schools across the country. The rule has taken effect since April 1.
It requires that administrators (管理人员) should keep record of each meal and work out any food problems timely. Parents can also eat with students at school canteens and give suggestions to the school on food safety and nutrition.
The rule raised heated discussion.
Many students were sad about the ban. “Without snack shops, our campus life will be less interesting,” a student from a senior high school in Hangzhou, told Qianjiang Evening News. “We won’t be able to have different kinds of drinks or desserts.”
However, many parents showed support for the rule. The father of a junior school student in Beijing told the Global Times that “cheap, low-quality snacks sold at these stores are harmful to children’s health.” “Students rush to shops to buy snacks as soon as a class is over, which affects the normal teaching order,” he said.

This year, the world celebrates the anniversary of the birth of a great US author, J.D. Salinger (1919- 2010). Salinger was one of the most influential authors of the last century. His writing is popular among all age groups, young people are especially big fans of his.
The reason he has such a following is due to his novel The Catcher in the Rye (1951《麦田里的守望者》). The hero and narrator(叙述人) of this story is named Holden Caulfield. Holden is a troublemaker at school and has difficulty getting on with others, whether they are adults or people his own age.
However, Holden has a heart of gold. Many readers have been moved by the protective attitude he has toward young children, especially to his little sister Phoebe. Millions of people all over the world have taken the troubled 17-year-old Holden into their hearts.
Salinger didn’t actually write all that much over the course of his life. Apart from The Catcher in the Rye, he published a few other shorter works, and after 1965, nothing at all. The reason for this seems to be that he hated publicity (公众的注意). He had become famous with the success of his novel and didn’t care for the fame. He refused to give interviews and did not allow anyone to write his biography. He came to hate publicity so much that he stopped publishing his writing altogether.
But Salinger still kept on writing. It’s said that he wrote eight other novels. Fans of his work hope that one day they will be able to read these “lost” Salinger books.
