A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the candy they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.
By the time the children reach high school, something amazing has happened. A survey found that those who was four year old had enough self-control to hold out generally and grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation (诱惑) early were more likely to be lonely, easily upset in time of difficulties and inflexible.
Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn’t show up on an IQ test.
The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists’ concerns. But brain theory can’t explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would defeat a less resistant (有抵抗力的) person.
Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence: when it comes to predicting people’s success, brain ability measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as “character”.
EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together, how one’s ability handles stress, for instance, affecting the ability to concentrate and putting intelligence to use. Among the ingredients (要素) for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for about 20%, the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.
While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.
【1】Why does the author mention the experiment at the beginning of the text?
A. make the readers amused B. prove the scientist’s wisdom
C. introduce the topic of the text D. show us how to do an IQ test
【2】The experiment with the four-year-olds shows us that .
A. the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment
B. the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success
C. emotional intelligence won’t show up until Teen years.
D. candy can be used to measure a person’s emotional intelligence
【3】The underlined word “upbeat” in Paragraph 4 probably means .
A. positive B. negative
C. impatient D. friendly
【4】From the passage we learn that .
A. EQ does not have any connection with IQ
B. The higher a person’s IQ is, the higher his or her EQ is
C. Brain theory is able to explain what we wonder about most
D. Scientists haven’t discovered the way EQ and IQ work together

The octopus( 章鱼) has been a little frightening to people for years. It seems like it could be from another planet, because the animal has eight slippery arms, each of which has its own kind of brain. It is very different from a person's brain.
However, it turns out the sea creatures might be more like us than we thought. Scientists say that octopuses have been building cities underwater. Scientists have discovered that the so called "gloomy (忧郁的,幽暗的) octopus”, whose scientific name is octopus tetricus, is not that gloomy and alone after all.
In Jervis Bay, in eastern Australia, this type of octopus has been seen to gather at a site that looks like a small city. Scientists have named it Octlantis. Octopuses have a way of talking to each other there and even kick each other out of the site. Professor David Scheel, leading a study on them, compares Octlantis to our towns in his new report. The octopuses might be acting the way people do to each other, he said.
The discovery of Octlantis is important. It backs up scientists' ideas about what octopuses do. Another nearby octopus city in Australia was found below the water in 2009. It was thought to be the only one then. The city, named Octopolis. was formed around a large piece of metal made by people. A writer, Peter Godfrey-Smith, who wrote a book about octopuses, went diving at the underwater city. He saw it as an underwater island where octopuses would be protected. They could hide from sharks and dolphins.
Octlantis does not have any human object at its center. Its ocean builders have built walls from the shells of other animals. These shells come from animals the octopuses ate. One reason for these underwater towns may be that there is a food supply nearby.
The cities may help the octopus evolve(进化), or change over a long period of time. They could make octopus brains better, Godfrey-Smith said. Octopus cities let us see how the animals act. They are said to be as smart as a person who is 3 years old.
【1】Why is the discovery of Octlantis important for scientists?
A.It shows that octopuses could have built more cities.
B.It shows that octopuses can use human objects to build cities and houses .
C.It shows that octopuses know how to work in groups to find food for everyone.
D.It shows that octopuses can live together in peace instead of just fighting each other.
【2】Which sentence from the 4th paragraph explains why octopuses might choose to live in a city?
A.It was thought to be the only one then.
B.They could hide from sharks and dolphins.
C.It backs up scientists' ideas about what octopuses do.
D.The city was formed around a large piece of metal made by people.
【3】What is the main writing purpose of the last paragraph?
A.It shows how smart the octopus is.
B.It shows how the octopus has evolved.
C.It calls on the readers to protect the octopus.
D.It explains why it is important to study octopus cities.
【4】What can the readers get to know because of the discovery of octopus cities?
A.Octopuses have brains even in their arms.
B.Octopuses might even be smarter than humans.
C.Octopuses have a lot in common with humans.
D.Octopuses are very dangerous because they can work together.

When the leaves begin to change their colors and the birds head south, we know the season is starting to change. On September 7 comes White Dew (白露), the 15th solar term (节气) of the year. It indicates (标志着) the beginning of the cool autumn. As the temperature falls, white dew is often seen on the grass and trees at night.
For w riters and poets, autumn is a difficult season to describe. It ’s the end of the summer, and therefore a little sad. The days seem to get shorter, and when you wake in the morning, t here’s mist(薄雾) and it’s cooler. Winter is just around the corner.
American writer Ernest Hemingway wrote in his book A Moveable Feast (《流动的盛宴》), “You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches (枝条) were bare (光秃秃的) against the wind and the cold, wintry light. ”
But on the other hand, autumn has its good side. There are so many changes at this time of year, such as the colorful leaves and cooler nights. French w riter Albert Camus even thought autumn was a second spring, “when every leaf is a flower.” This view is also found in the most famous autumn poem in English literature, To Autumn by John Keats. In that poem, Keats says that autumn has its own songs, just like spring.
Another theme of this season is wisdom (智慧). The arrival of autumn is thought to be similar to a person becoming mature (成熟的).
The great Irish poet W.B. Yeats used this idea in his poem The Wild Swans at Coole (《库尔的野 天鹅》), writing about the changing seasons in Coole Park in the west of Ireland. Seeing and counting 59 swans, he remembers first making the count as a young man. Seeing the swans do the same thing for all those years, he’s reminded (提醒) that even though we get older, our hearts always stay the same age.
【1】What can be concluded about White Dew ?
A.It is often ignored by w riters and poets. B.It is the time of year with the most rainfall.
C.It is when the temperature begins to drop. D.It indicates the end of the autumn.

A.point out that autumn is very cold B.present the sad part of autumn
C.show that winter w ill soon come D.express sadness about the end of life
【3】What does “this idea” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Autumn is an important season for man. B.We can always stay young at heart.
C.Autumn is related to one’s grow ing old. D.Nature is full of lessons to be learned.
【4】What’s the article mainly about?
A.The solar term White Dew. B.Why autumn is a sad season.
C.Autumn weather and activities. D.Famous writers’ description of autumn.
