If you are crazy about paintings, you shouldn’t miss the following four famous masterpieces which have stood the test of time.
The Arnolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through Jan van Eyck’s heavy use of symbolism—while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas (帆布), a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of Vincent van Gogh’s most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It demonstrates the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title “Guernica” refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting demonstrates the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofaí in Madrid.
【1】Which of the following paintings was produced latest?
A.The Arnolfini Portrait. B.The Starry Night.
C.The Harvesters. D.Guernica.
【2】Who created the painting describing the harvest time?
A.Pieter Bruegel the Elder. B.Vincent van Gogh.
C.Jan van Eyck. D.Pablo Picasso.
【3】What can we know according to the passage?
A.In Jan van Eyck’s time, husbands were also responsible for housework.
B.Nicolaes Jonghelinck enjoyed the same reputation as Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
C.The Starry Night wasn’t widely recognized before 1941.
D.Guernica is collected at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

It was a cold winter. The wind blew all night and the snow was blinding. When morning came, my three children and I got up and made our way to the windows. As we looked out the window, we saw that the henhouse was gone. Our three hens had been blown away.
I looked at the emptiness outside. Then I saw all three chickens sat around the edge of a white bucket. How was this violent wind not blowing them into the field beyond? I quickly pulled on long snow pants and heavy winter coat, wrapped a scarf and stuck my feet into very large boots .
I shouted at the wind as it blew. I was alone, save for my children. They stared out the window into the vast white sea of snow, their eyes peeled for any sign of movement. Outside I heard the sound of my boots as I walked against the wind.
The snow circling around me, I steadily made my way to the soft cluck-cluck-cluck sound my hens always made. When I reached them, I saw that their little feet were holding on to the edge of the bucket, heads bent forward and away from the wind. I gently lifted each hen and put it carefully into the warm inside. Then I began the freezing walk back to the small shed directly behind our house. One by one I laid my chickens on the cold floor, and they began to cluck softly.
As I shut the shed doors, my eyes went directly to the window where my children were watching. They jumped up and down cheering, and so did I! I wasn’t some dragon slayer (屠龙者) from a fairy tale. I was simply a mom, but the look on my children’s faces told me that they thought I was a hero mom.
【1】Seeing all three chickens sitting around the bucket ,the author felt ______.
A. incredible B. worried
C. shy D. confident
【2】How does the author reach the hens ?
A. By searching for the white bucket. B. By wearing protective clothes.
C. By following the sound of the hens. D. By shouting at the henhouse.
【3】From the story, we know that _________.
A. the author’s children liked dragon slayers
B. the children watched their mother all the way
C. the author struggled to be a hero
D. the author enjoyed herself in the snow
【4】What might be the best title for the text?
A. Weather in extreme. B. Hens in trouble.
C. Kindness in need. D. Hero in the snow.

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated each 31st of May. The aim is to bring attention to the growing use of tobacco and its deadly effects. The World Health Assembly established the event in 1987. This year, special attention is being given to the harmful effects of tobacco marketing to women and girls.
The WHO says the tobacco industry has increasingly directed its marketing campaigns at women and girls. Study shows that women currently represent about twenty percent of smokers while tobacco use among girls is increasing. Data collected from 151 countries show that about seven percent of young girls now smoke. That compares with twelve percent of boys. In some countries, however, the rates are almost equal.
Almost 170 countries have signed an agreement called the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control which calls on those governments to ban tobacco advertising to the fullest to protect women. The agreement seeks to reduce the demand and supply of tobacco products. This year marks the fifth anniversary since the treaty went into effect. Up to now, eighty percent of the signers have banned the sale of tobacco products to young people. Seventy percent have required health warnings on tobacco products.
Events are planned in a number of countries to mark World No Tobacco Day. Many of the events are aimed at persuading people, especially the young, not to start smoking. Others aim to educate people about the many health benefits of giving up smoking.
The World Health Organization says tobacco kills nearly five and a half million people a year and has become a top cause of death worldwide. It is estimated that so far in the world one billion people smoke. More than eighty percent of tobacco users live in low and middle income countries. The WHO estimates that tobacco use caused one hundred million deaths in the twentieth century. If current rates continue, that number could reach one billion in this century.

Machines might one day replace human laborers in a number of professions, but surely they won’t ever replace human artists. Right?
Think again. Not even our artists will be safe from the inevitable machine takeover, if a new development in artificial intelligence(AI) by a team of researchers from Rutgers University and Facebook’s AI lab offers a clue of what’s to come. They have designed an AI capable of not only producing art, but actually inventing whole new aesthetic(美学的) styles similar to movements like impressionism or abstract expressionism. The idea, according to researcher Marian Mazzone, was to make art that is “novel, but not too novel”.
The model used in this project involves a generator network, which produces the images, and a discriminator network, which “judges” whether it’s art. Once the generator learns how to produce work that the distributor recognizes as art, it’s given an additional instruction: to produce art that doesn’t match any known aesthetic styles.
“You want to have something really creative and striking — but at the same time not to go too far and make something that isn’t aesthetically pleasing,” explained Ahmed Elgammal.
The art that was generated by the system was then presented to human judges alongside human-produced art without showing which was which. To the researchers’ surprise, the machine-made art scored slightly higher overall than the human-produced art.
Of course, machines can’t yet replace the meaning conveyed in works by human artists, but this project shows that artist skill sets certainly seem reproducible by machines.
What will it take for machines to produce content with meaning? That might be the last AI frontier. Human artists can at least hang their hats in that field for now.
“Imagine having people over for a dinner party and they ask, ‘Who is that by?’ And you say, ‘Well, it’s a machine actually.’ That would be an interesting conversation starter,” said Kevin Walker.
【1】What is implied in the second paragraph?
A.Artists won’t be replaced by AI. B.AI can produce new styles of art.
C.AI is totally at a loss about impressionism. D.AI fails to reflect abstract expressionism.
【2】What did Marian find in his study?
A.AI can please human judges with its art. B.AI can combine content with meaning.
C.AI can make art aesthetically unpleasant. D.AI can create high quality arts.
【3】What does the underlined phrase “hang their hats” mean?
A.Discover. B.Hold. C.Struggle. D.Appear.
【4】What Kevin said in the last paragraph tells us that .
A.she uses machines to cook for a party B.she likes to join in a dinner party
C.she expects the arrival of AI D.she cares about the starter of a chat

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
【1】Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Some people burst with anger, and scream and yell.【2】They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones ( 荷 尔蒙 ). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.【3】
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
【4】They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, and then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “【5】Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.
A.In general, the person feels excited and ready to act.
B.But other people keep their anger inside.
C.Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.
D.Anger may cause you a cancer.
E.Do not express your anger while angry.
F.Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.
G.Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

阅读下面材料,根据所给情节和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sally had trouble speaking in social situations. I’m a registered nurse and I love kids and dogs. I wanted to use Bella to bring her joy, comfort and confidence the way only a dog can.
That morning in January, her teacher led us to a room by the school office. “Sally hasn’t spoken outside her home in the last two years,” she told me. “Her parents have taken her to doctors, but nothing has worked.” A little girl stood shyly just inside the doorway. Her eyes brightened when noticing my dog.
“This is Isabella Rose. I call her Bella,” I said. “Would you like to pet her? She doesn’t know anyone here and she’d like to meet you. She does tricks. Would you like to see?”
Sally nodded. I motioned with my hand. Bella lay down and then rolled over. Sally’s eyes cheered up. “She’ll do it for you too,” I said. “I can teach you.”
I showed Sally the hand signals for various commands. She was a natural with Bella. Soon Sally was able to take Bella at her pace all on her own. I could see her standing taller, more sure of herself each time we met.
One morning, when she was working with Bella, I heard a tiny voice, barely a whisper: “Good dog.” Sally didn’t take her eyes off Bella, but I wanted to jump for joy. Sally spoke a little more each week, only to Bella at first, but then to me. Later, she started giving voice commands with her hand signals and her confidence rose. Still, she hadn’t spoken in her classroom.
“Could you bring Bella to my class and show the other kids her tricks?” Sally asked me one day. An idea struck me. “Why don’t you do it?” I said. “I know you can. You’re as good with Bella as I am.” Now, Sally stood nervously in front of her kindergarten class, with Bella sitting calmly by her side. Her classmates focused on Sally, waiting for her to speak.
