After attending another parent meeting regarding my 7-year-old child’s behaviour, I didn’t know what to do. It was the second school we had tried for Nathan and, as always, everything was being done for my child’s needs. It was also having bad effects on Nathan. He would come home and say, “ Mom , I hate my life. I do not want to live anymore.” I was afraid that my son was beginning to suffer from depression and that I was losing him. We needed help.
By the age of seven, Nathan had already had three surgeries for his ears. He was in great pain, regardless of pain medication, which made it difficult for him to learn or pay attention. Despite Nathan’s bad condition, staff at two previous schools seemed as though they didn’t care. They often forgot to deal with his medication. As a result of many times of ear infections, Nathan had hearing loss. To make things worse, Nathan’s speech was not very good. Children would play a trick on him and Nathan began to fall behind in study.
When I first set foot into Ripley House Charter School, I knew this was the school for my son. It felt positive from the moment I entered. From the start, Mrs. Elsen and her staff heard my concern over Nathan. Mrs. Elsen addressed my concern, not with empty words but with action.
That day, Nathan came home from his first day of school saying, “ Mom, I love school !” By the end of the week he was saying “ Mom, I like my life. I have a good life.” Ripley House Charter School gave me my son back and saved our lives. Thank you for giving me back what we had lost ----HOPE.

When you are sitting in the car, do you ever notice the drivers looking over their shoulders or side to side in the car? Well, they are doing this to check their blind spots! Blind spots take driving extremely difficult and increase the potential for car accidents.
Fourteen-year-old Alaina Gassler from Pennsylvania noticed her mother struggling with blind spots while driving their family car. So she came up with an ingenious solution that won the first place and $25,000 in the Broadcom Masters Competition.
Blind spots are the areas around the car that cannot be directly observed by the driver. There are two kinds of blind spots---on the back of the car that cannot be seen with mirrors, and blind spots at the front of the car as well.
When a driver is changing lanes, he has to look over his shoulder through the side windows to make sure that there is no vehicle in the blind spot. This invisible area is big enough to hide a car!
The other blind spot is created in the front by the A-pillar(柱子)---the material on either side on the windshield(挡风玻璃)that holds the glass and forms the frame of the car. In some cars, this pillar can be quite thick. Usually, people or cyclists can be hidden by this pillar.
Alaina's design was to get rid of the blind spot created by the front A-pillar of the car, the one that helps hold up the windshield.
She put a camera on the outside passenger side of the car which then sent the photos to a projector above the drivers' head. Then, she covered the inside of the pillar in reflective fabric onto which the image was projected. Basically, her device made the pillar "see through" and removed the blind spot on that side of the car.
Alnina's solution is very creative and could be improved by using LCD displays that will make it easier to see during day time as well.

C.By relying on LCD displays. D.By using a camera to capture images.
【4】What's the best title for the text?
A.An Introduction to Blind Spots B.A Warning About the Road Safety

Asia has long tradition of tea- drinking. And China is no exception.
However, lately more and more Chinese people are turning to a different drink. Coffee has become an increasingly popular choice of Chinese people living abroad and in the country's huge cities. It is also a popular crop among those living in the mountains of southern Yunnan Province.
In big cities such as Beijing, coffee shops seem to be on nearly every major street corner. These shops are not just selling drinks from Starbucks, the world-famous coffee company. Coffee businesses from South Korea, Taiwan, HongKong and Britain are also operating in China.
Tea-drinking is steeped in the culture and traditions of many countries, like China and Japan. But is that changing? Are young people from Asia now choosing a cup of coffee instead of tea?
BeiBei Su is from China. She has been living in the United States for the past eight years. Before that, she lived in Italy for two years. Ms. Su says she likes tea better than coffee. But she adds that may not be true among the young generation in China. Many young Chinese people drink coffee socially --when meeting with friends. Yang Lin lives in the U.S. but comes from an area in China famous for growing tea. She used to only drink tea while in China. But now, she says, she drinks both and for different reasons.
Yang Lin says that drinking coffee for her is a social event. She and her co-workers like to sit in a cafe and talk over a cup of coffee. Voyo is another Chinese woman who now lives in Washington, D.C. She says that after moving to the U.S. Her tastes changed. We would call her a coffee convert, someone who now chooses to drink coffee.
With more people drinking coffee, many see an economic(经济的)opportunity for Chinese -grown beans. China-grown coffee could be a money- maker even if most of the coffee on sale in China is imported.
【1】What does the author mainly introduce?
A. Chinese people have long tradition of tea-drinking.
B. More and more Chinese are choosing coffee to drink
C. People in big cities like drinking coffee better than tea.
D. More Asian people are turning to different drinks.

A. A person who has changed to drink coffee.
B. A person who has changed to drink tea.
C. A person who has changed to grow tea.
D. A person who has changed to grow coffee.
【3】Why does YangLin drink coffee?
A. Because she lives in the U.S. Now.
B. Because she can talk with friends.
C. Because she has drunk tea so long.
D. Because her tastes has changed.
【4】From the last paragraph, we can infer that _____
A. less and less coffee will be imported in China in the future.
B. the China-grown coffee beans will be sold to the world soon.
C. the need of coffee will offer more chances to make money.
D. Chinese economy will depend on coffee beans in the future.

How to Avoid Distractions
Nowadays, it can be tougher than ever to focus without getting distracted. Many of the thoughts, behaviors and devices that play an important role in daily life turn out to be distractions. Here are some tips on how to avoid distractions.
Create a distraction-free environment.
Shut off your phone and other electronic equipment. Before you dive into working, cleaning, writing or whatever else you need to do, turn off or silence your cell phone and anything else that might prove to be distraction. This includes the TV, video games, etc. 【1】
Find out where you work best.
Pick a place where you can work comfortably for long periods of time. This could be a small corner desk, a well-lit sunroom or your favorite coffee shop. The point is to surround yourself with an atmosphere that makes completing tasks easier. 【2】 For example, trying to work in a quiet bedroom may just make you sleepy.
Make sure you won’t be interrupted.
When you have big projects that demand focus, stay in a quiet place. If you work in an office, for instance, shutting the door can relay the message that you’d better not be bothered. 【3】 However, you should at least be able to single out which interactions are necessary and which aren’t.
Focus with intention.
【4】 Many people never truly learn how to stay focused and find it difficult to keep their minds from wandering. Try to shut off your own mental distractions so that you can concentrate on checking items off your to-do list.
【5】
Most people are only able to stay focused for a few hours a day, so be sure that you’re making the best use of that time. If you’re a morning person, wake up and get busy as early as you can. Night owls can divide their tasks up between regular working hours and free time after everyone else has gone to bed.
A.Do the most important work first.
B.Set aside specific time to work.
C.You have to remind yourself to actively focus sometimes.
D.Technology may be the biggest distraction in modern society.
E.Be careful of surroundings that can dull your focus in other ways.
F.This may not always be possible if you share a space with coworkers.
G.An ideal working environment is one where you can work most effectively.
