Surfing: Famous Beaches, Famous Waves
North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii: Famous for being the birthplace of surfing
Wide, sandy beaches stretch nearly 20 miles along the Pacific Ocean. Between December and February, this surfing destination is suitable only for experienced surfers, as its big waves can reach 30 feet. In summer, the ocean can be almost completely flat, making it perfect for swimming.
Huntington Beach, California: Famous for the US Open of Surfing competition
This busy 8.5-mile-long beach attracts 8 million visitors a year for bodysurfing, boogie boarding (趴板冲浪), and board surfing at every level, beginner to expert. At night, the beach’s fire pits (深坑) draw families as much as the waves do during the day. The best time for surfers is winter, when the swells can hit 15 feet.
Jeffreys Bay, South Africa: Famous for being the setting of the classic movie The Endless Summer
This area of the ocean may contain the most consistent waves on the planet, with some up to 10 feet. The best waves are between late May and late August. The beach sometimes closes because of sharks, but at other times, surfers are lucky enough to surf alongside dolphins.
Tamarindo, Costa Rica: Famous for being featured in the movie The Endless Summer Ⅱ
This beach has waves up to 12 feet high, which are good for long-boarders or short-boarders, beginners or experts, with the best waves from April to July. Bodysurfing is not recommended because of offshore rocks. The laid-back atmosphere and nearly perfect year-round weather make it feel like the California beaches of the 1950s.

Growing up, I remember my father as a silent, serious man — not the sort of person around whom one could laugh. As a teenager arriving in America, knowing nothing, I wanted a father who could explain the human journey. In college, when friends called home for advice, I would sink into deep depression for what I did not have.
Today, at twenty-seven, I have come to rediscover them in ways that my teenage mind would not allow — as adults and as friends with their own faults and weaknesses.
One night after my move back home, I overheard my father on the telephone. These was some trouble. Later, Dad shared the problem with me. Apparently my legal training had earned me some privileges in his eyes. I talked through the problem with Dad, analyzing the purposes of the people involved and offering several negotiation strategies. He listened patiently before finally admitting, “I can’t think like that. I am a simple man.”
Dad is a brilliant scientist who can deconstruct the building blacks of nature. Yet human nature is a mystery to him. That night I realized that he was simply not skilled at dealing with people, much less the trouble of a conflicted teenager. It’s not in his nature to understand human desires.
And so, there it was — it was no one’s fault that my father held no interest in human lives while I placed great importance in them. We are at times born more sensitive, wide-eyed, and dreamy than our parents and become more curious and idealistic than them. Dad perhaps never expected me for a child. And I, who knew Dad as an intelligent man, had never understood that his intelligence did not cover all of my feelings.
It has saved me years of questioning and confusion. I now see my parents as people who have other relationships than just Father and Mother. I now overlook their many faults and weaknesses, which once annoyed me.
I now know my parents as friends: people who ask me for advice; people who need my support and understanding. And I’ve come to see my past clearly.

The Damage that aging does to a body extends all the way down to the cellular level. But the damage increased by cells in older muscles is especially severe, because the cells do not reproduce easily and they become weaker as their mitochondria (线粒体), which produce energy, reduce in energy and number. A study, however, suggests that certain sorts of exercise may remove some of what time can do to our mitochondria.
Exercise is good for people, as everyone knows. But scientists have surprisingly little understanding of its cellular impacts and how those might vary by activity and the age of the exerciser. So researchers recently conducted an experiment on the cells of 72 healthy but sedentary (久坐的) men and women who were 30 or younger or older than 64. After baseline measures were established for their aerobic (有氧的) fitness, their blood-sugar levels and the gene activity and mitochondrial health in their muscle cells, the volunteers were randomly assigned to a particular exercise program.
Some of them did intense (强烈的) weight training several times a week; some did brief interval training three times a week on exercise bicycles; some rode exercise bikes at an appropriate pace for 30 minutes a few times a week and lifted weights lightly on other days. A fourth group, the control (对照组), did not exercise. After 12 weeks, the lab tests were repeated. In general, everyone experienced improvements in fitness and an ability to regulate blood sugar.
But more unexpected results were found in the biopsied (活组织检查) muscle cells. Among the younger subjects who went through interval training, the activity levels had changed in 274 genes, compared with 170 genes for those who exercised more appropriately and 74 for the weight lifters. Among the older group, almost 400 genes were working differently now, compared with 33 for the weight lifters and only 19 for the appropriate exercisers.
Many of these affected genes, especially in the cells of the interval trainers, are believed to influence the ability of mitochondria to produce energy for muscle cells; the subjects who did the interval exercise showed an increase in the number and health of their mitochondria — an impact that was particularly pronounced among the older cyclists. It seems exercise could help contain the decline in the cellular health of muscles associated with aging, especially if it was intense, says Dr. Sreekumaran Nair, the study’s senior author. In fact, older people’s cells responded in some ways more strongly to intense exercise than the cells of the young did — suggesting, he says, that it is never too late to benefit from exercise.

The most typical definition of success is “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose” or what most of us have heard: the attainment of popularity or profit. But is success really defined by purposes or profit?
After graduating from high school, my family advised me to aim to build a successful career. My options were narrowed down to becoming a doctor or choosing a field in engineering. So I graduated with a chemical engineering degree. I was advised to aim for graduate (研究生的) studies, and in less than two years, I had a highly specialized degree in plastics engineering from one of the most reputable universities in the U.S. Then I found a corporate job, performed well in the organization, climbed up the ladder (晋升的阶梯) and made a bigger paycheque with every new title. My proud parents told my story to the rest of the family and friends as a “success” story.
No matter where we live in the world, we all have our own versions of success. Our families take pride in telling the world how successful we are in our profession, and often the only measure of that success becomes the financial wealth we accumulate. In a world where everything is reflected by numbers—the likes on Facebook, the number of views on You Tube, etc—every aspect of our life is being taken over by numbers. We are conditioned to believe that the stronger your financial standing, the higher you rank on the success chart. But remember the words “aim” or “purpose,” in the definition of success. Altruistic figures such as Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. also lived successful lives but had selfless concern over the well-being of others. While the rest of the world focused on accumulating wealth, they focused on giving, doing, and creating for everyone else.
Wealth alone never will be the measure of success. Think beyond profits. No promotion I ever received in my professional career was because of my deep desire to obtain a better title or higher pay; instead, it was based on the excellence I created in the experience our customers had with the organization.
【1】What do you know about the author?
A. He has lived up to his family’s expectations.
B. He asks his parents for advice on everything.
C. He doesn’t like his job though he is well paid.
D. He wanted to be a doctor but became a chemical engineer.
【2】What's the common awareness around the world?
A. Social connections. B. Contributions to society.
C. The accumulation of financial wealth. D. The accomplishment of personal dreams.
【3】What does the underlined word “Altruistic” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Of abundant wealth.
B. Of few achievements.
C. Devoted to others’ welfare.
D. Focused on personal well-being.
【4】What inspiration can be drawn from the author's working experience?
A. Change jobs frequently for higher pay.
B. Aim at providing quality service at work.
C. Take every chance to get promotion.
D. Focus on making profits from the customers.
【5】What's the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explore the true meaning of success.
B. To express his inner voice to his parents.
C. To acknowledge the help he has received in his life.
D. To share his personal experience for others’ reference.

When Brantley Harrison and her family rescued a tiny, injured squirrel back in October 2010, then released her back into the wild, they didn’t expect to ever see her again. Nine years later, however, little Bella, they called the squirrel Bella, still comes to visit them almost every day — as long as snacks are provided, of course.
As a baby, the terrible attack made by an owl (猫头鹰) left Bella near death, she was carefully taken in by the Greenville County, South Carolina family, and raised by them alongside three other squirrels named Larry, Curly, and Moe. Bella stayed with the Harrisons until spring 2011, at which point she had healed (痊愈) successfully thanks to a regular diet of fruit, nuts, and baby food, and was ready to jump on the trees in the forest. The sweet squirrel never goes too far from her adopted home, though, and stops by to say hello whenever she can, despite how much time has passed.
“Bella sits right at the front door waiting for someone to notice she has come by for a visit. If no one notices her, she will jump over to the dining room window to wait for someone to see her,” Brantley told The Dodo. The little lady just isn’t ready to part with the family that succored her life. Whenever she stops by, she asks for nothing more than a handful of nuts.
What is the most amazing part? A few years after Bella’s original stay at the Harrison house, she found her way back to them with an injured foot — and a belly full of babies — spending another few months of recovering. “It was truly amazing to watch the baby I raised raise her own babies,” Brantley said. Bella now even has her own Instagram page, where her human family documents her adventures, with almost 4 thousand followers!
