Sophia Scott meant to spend the summer as an intern (实习生) shadowing doctors at the UCLA Concussion Clinic, as she had the year before. With COVID-19, the senior from Marymount High School had to put her plans on hold.
“Once everything fell through, I wanted to make sure I used my time as well as I could,” she explained.
Instead of using the summer focusing on herself, the 17-year-old from Los Angeles set about trying to help others. Recognizing that distance learning has been tricky for many, Scott decided to use her God-given academic skills to do something for others.
In a matter of weeks, she set up and launched Quaranteens, a free tutoring service that gathered together other like-minded teens to help out those students needing an academic boost in various subjects. She hoped that she and her group could really help the students get improved.
Impressively, Scott didn’t sit around waiting for students in difficulty to reach out for help. She set up a website and actively offered her services to charities focused on education, appreciating that there were many pupils struggling with the distance learning experience.
“A lot of the students I’ve worked with felt their school year was essentially cut off last March, which absolutely would have a negative impact on the year ahead. So a lot of the work we did was trying to help them catch up,” the new tutor shared.
This situation has been experienced around the world by many students, so the fact that this caring teen sought to remedy (挽救) the situation single-handedly makes her actions more inspiring.
Now with lots of children back in school, Scott hasn't finished her tutoring service. Instead, the experience has encouraged her and her team, which now totals an impressive 16 tutors, to continue offering their help.
“What is most satisfying to me is knowing that something small I'm doing now, like helping a kid become better at reading, could have such a wide range of impact on their education in the future.”

Scientists have designed transparent wood that could replace conventional glass in windows.
The innovation was developed using wood from the balsa tree, which is native to South and Central America, and claims to be five times more thermally efficient than glass.
The team treated balsa wood in an oxidizing bath that bleaches it of nearly all visibility and then penetrated it with polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), creating a product that is virtually transparent.
Unlike traditional glass, the transparent wood can withstand much stronger impacts and will bend when damaged, instead of breaking into a lot of small pieces.
The transparent wood was created by teams at the University of Maryland and University of Colorado, which set out to find a greener alternative to conventional glass-a product that creates 25,000 tons in carbon emissions each year. Along with contributing to greenhouse gases, glass contributes to a loss of energy.
“Residential building windows in particular account for 10%~25%of the heat loss due to their poor thermal management capability,” the team wrote in the study. “Exploring energy efficient window materials is thus highly desirable to address heating costs, energy shortages, and the global impact of climate change associated with increased carbon emissions.”
The team notes that the bonding between PVA and cellulose in the wood, creates a tightly packed structure that allows for more thermal protection and makes it more durable and lighter than glass.
“Switching to transparent wood could prove to be efficient as well, ” researchers shared in a statement. “It is approximately five times more thermally efficient than glass, cutting energy costs. It is made from a sustainable, renewable resource with low carbon emissions. It also agrees with existing industrial processing equipment, making future mass production easier.”
【1】From where can you know how the transparent wood is made?
A.Paragraph 1 B.Paragraph 2 C.Paragraph 3 D.Paragraph 4
【2】What does the text say about the transparent wood?
A.It is environmentally-friendly. B.Its cost is much higher than glass.
C.It has been made in large quantities. D.It is designed to give off heat easily.
【3】What can be learned from researchers' words in the last paragraph?
A.It is difficult for people to get used to the transparent wood.
B.Conventional glass in windows is likely to remain popular.
C.Existing industrial processing equipment is still inadequate.
D.The future of the transparent wood is promising.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.A better way to make windows. B.An alternative to window glass.
C.The transparent wood in concept. D.A tree used for transparent wood.

Many studies have shown that getting more exercise is good for our brain. But can it happen the other way around? Can working on elevating mood help us to exercise more? The answer to this question is positive.
A study conducted by Emmons and McCullough formed three groups. One group was told to journal once a week and list 5 things that happened during the week that they were grateful for. Another group was told to journal once a week and list 5 things that had been a problem for them. A third group was told to journal once a week about 5 things that affected them, but were not given instruction as to whether they should be positive or negative.
After 10 weeks, the group that had focused on gratitude ended up 25%happier than the other two groups. Astonishingly, the gratitude group also exercised almost 1. 5 hours longer per week than the other groups.
Daniel Amen, in his book, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, notes that emotional tagging of events is critical to survival. If we tag an event negatively, it can cause an avoidance response. If we tag an event positively, it can drive us to action.
Apparently, our survival is more dependent on being able to perceive a threat to our being, rather than notice that something good is happening. Focusing on the negative can cause us to lose sight of the big picture.
Jonathan Haidt, in his book The Happiness Hypothesis, explains that once we take a negative stance, we look for evidence that supports it. If we find some evidence-enough so that our position makes sense-we stop thinking. When this happens, often people will not start a change of thinking for themselves.
Jonathan Haidt notes that gratitude increases one's sense of control over a situation. A sense of control can bring about an increase in action, energy, and happiness. This can translate into sustained optimism, the ability to consider new options, set new goals, and, yes, even exercise more.
【1】What were the three groups in Emmons and McCullough's study asked to do?
A.Write five things down B.Take exercise regularly
C.Focus on being thankful D.Express their true feelings
【2】Why is emotional tagging significant?
A.It protects us from negative emotions. B.It allows us to think in a positive way.
C.It tells us how to manage our feelings. D.It determines how we respond to events.
【3】How can being grateful benefit us according to Jonathan Haidt?
A.It helps us to get rid of unrealistic goals. B.We feel situations are more controllable.
C.It is a great way to stop thinking too much. D.We will regard everything around wonderful.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.Changing Thinking Model Is Necessary B.Staying Optimistic Brings Active Thinking
C.Working Out Regularly Is Good for Our Brain D.Being Grateful Motivates Us to Exercise More

I worked from the time when I was four and raised seven children, all of them college graduates. It seemed I'd done everything I'd ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret. I was born in 1898, the oldest of five kids. Papa couldn't spare me to go to school, so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.
Everywhere I went, I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can't read the alphabet. People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.
By 1928, I'd been wandering for nine years. I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work-fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children, first went to school, I took my wife aside. “Elzenia,” I said, “I don't want the kids to know I can't read or write ”
In 1938, one day my boss called me in. “George,” he said, “no one knows those machines like you do. I'd like to promote you. " But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said, “Fill out this application and we'll get you a raise. ” I couldn't admit the truth. I thanked him and walked out of his office. I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn't stop working. For the next 25 years, I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.
One day, a young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It's information about adult education classes, where people can learn to read and write. Now I'm 98. I thought of my friends and neighbors and what they might think if they found out I couldn't read. After all these years, my secret would be out. But all my life I've wanted to read. It was high time for action.
